Mathare is widely known for it's informal settlement, Mathare Slums that hosts a number of families living in Nairobi. It boarders Pangani, Eastleigh, a section of Githurai and Kariobangi, the home of Nairobi's most silent millionaires.

Despite making news especially in the gangs that live in the area and being a home for low income earners, the neighborhood is a home of many performing businesses.

Most business people consider setting up premises in the area for it's low costs of operations in matters rent and availability of ready market.
It is widely known for being a home of vehicle spare parts and most celebrated motor vehicle mechanics, some of the most underrated hustles but most paying since they are always on demand.

The area has produced most millionaires characterized by the multimillion businesses put up, ranging from motor vehicle tyre business and small industries with very big turnovers.
Presence of leading banks, supermarkets, microfinance institutions that seem to enjoy the vibrance and the shilling flow.
