Armed thugs who had set up a roadblock in Kaliro District to waylay and rob unsuspecting motorists ended up flagging down a police car whose occupants opened fire on them, killing one while his three accomplices fled with their gun.

The incident happened at Natwana Swamp along the Kaliro-Buwenge Road in Kaliro Town Council around 2am on Monday.

The Kaliro District Police Commander, David Kamwoya, said the deceased and three others, still at large, had staged a roadblock at the swamp to rob residents and other motorists.

“We received reports that the suspects, who were dressed in army uniform, were robbing residents at this point and dispatched officers to intervene. However, the thugs flagged down our patrol car hoping to rob its occupants and the officers opened fire on them,” Mr Kamwoya said.

Adding: “One thug was shot and he died on his way to Bumanya Health Centre III where he was being rushed by police for treatment.”
