Tale of the game

Birmingham have lost just once at home since September 2009; in 24 games since they have won 10, drawn 13 and lost the one, against Everton earlier this season.

But they have won just once in nine Premier League games, at home to Chelsea in November.

Arsenal arrive looking to repeat their score on their last visit to the second city, a 4-2 victory at Aston Villa in November, their last success away from home.
In six Premier League meetings at St Andrew's, Birmingham have won once, in May 2005, while losing three and drawing the last two.
Last season, Arsenal led through an 81st minute goal from Samir Nasri, but Kevin Phillips but a dent in their title aspirations when Kevin Phillips stole a last minute equaliser.
In October Arsenal beat Birmingham 2-1, but only after Nikola Zigic had given the visitors the lead. Nasri replied from the spot and Marouane Chamakh got the winner before Jack Wilshere was sent off.
Nasri started on the bench at Wigan on Wednesday but he can expect a recall, as could Theo Walcott and Wilshere.
One player almost certain to feature is Cesc Fabregas, who missed the 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium, through suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season during the 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Monday.
Robin van Persie and Alex Song were rested in midweek and they, too, could feature at Birmingham.
But Abou Diaby lasted just 27 minutes at Wigan and has been ruled out for ‘several weeks' with a calf strain. Manuel Almunia, Kieran Gibbs, Emmanuel Frimpong and Thomas Vermaelen are also out.
Birmingham could give a start to former Arsenal player Alex Hleb, who returned from injured as a substitute against Manchester United. But James McFadden is still missing.
This season: Arsenal 2 Birmingham 1.
Last season: Arsenal 3 Birmingham 1, Birmingham 1 Arsenal 1.
Stat of the game: Arsenal last won at St Andrew's almost four years ago, in February 2006.
Betting tip: Arsenal need a win but Birmingham rarely lose at home. A 1-0 away win is 6-1.
Birmingham City (probable, 4-1-4-1): Foster; Carr, Johnson, Dann, Ridgewell; Ferguson; Larsson, Gardner, Bowyer, Beausejour; Ferome.
Arsenal (probable, 4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Clichy; Denislon, Song; Arshavin, Fabregas, Nasri; Chamakh.

Newcastle boss Pardew cools Robbie Keane loan deal talk

Robbie Keane is surplus to requirements at Tottenham

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has played down talk of bringing in Spurs striker Robbie Keane on loan in January.
Pardew is looking to offer Andy Carroll more support up front, and Tottenham have said Keane, 30, is available.
The Magpies manager admitted: "If any player of that sort of quality becomes available, we would be interested.
"Whether it is possible to bring them to the club, we will have to see. But I'm not going into individuals because we've had so many names thrown at us."
West Ham, Birmingham and Wolves are also believed to be on Republic of Ireland skipper Keane's trail, although his wages could prove problematic.
Pardew has already made it clear that England forward Carroll is not for sale in the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old, ruled out of Sunday's Premier League trip to Wigan with a thigh injury, has established himself as one of English football's hottest properties with 11 goals so far this season.

Robbie Keane? We don't want more deadwood -come on lads, I think you can all think of something better than that

RIP Barton's Tash

Newcastle have been linked with moves for Leeds winger Max Gradel and Southampton's Jason Puncheon, currently on loan at Millwall.
But Pardew refused to be drawn, saying only: "Our priority if we can is to strengthen offensively, if possible, so that will be the area in which we are looking.
"I just think the market is going to be so tight - it's a small market and we will have to compete and see if it works for us.
"We are sound in terms of our players, but we want to add to the group if we can."
One man who could complete a permanent move to Tyneside in January is French winger Hatem Ben Arfa, whose loan spell from Marseille was rudely interrupted after only four games by a double leg fracture.
Newcastle negotiated a fee when they set up the loan deal, and Pardew is hopeful they can tie up the move.
He said: "He is a great player and Newcastle fans would love to see him at the club. All I would say is I am working towards seeing if that is possible."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger optimistic on title chances

Wenger's team are in third as 2010 draws to an end as Manchester United sit top

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Premier League title race is still wide open going into 2011.
Manchester City assistant boss Brian Kidd reckons leaders Manchester United are title favourites, insisting: "It's theirs to lose, it's in their hands."
But Wenger said: "It's an opinion that you can understand because United are top of the league at the moment.
"But what we have learned is that it is very, very open. Four or five teams can win the [Premier League] title."
After a mixed week in which they beat Chelsea 3-1 on Monday before being held 2-2 thanks to a late Wigan equaliser at the DW Stadium on Wednesday, Arsenal sit third in the Premier League - two points behind both the Manchester teams - as 2010 draws to a close.
Asked about what is needed to surge ahead of other title rivals in one of the most open championship battles in recent memory, Wenger added: "The most consistent team will win it in the end."
That quality is proving elusive for the league's top teams, with none of them able to put together a particularly impressive run of form.
And it is the unpredictability of Wenger's team - who have not won a trophy since 2005 - that raises questions over their own title credentials, a point which the Frenchman freely acknowledges.
606: DEBATE
Finally the win that Arsenal needed [against Chelsea] to prove they can win the league... surely they had the momentum... but then they make 8 changes and draw at Wigan. What shall we make of this?

legendOsgood

"All the bad things are behind me and I believe the best is ahead of me," he told BBC Sport.
"Every single defeat this year is still very painful in my heart - and I hope that 2011 will be much less painful than 2010."
Ahead of the January transfer window, Wenger said he was not overly concerned with making additions.
"I don't say no," he said. "But at the moment we are not close to signing anybody.
"Manchester City can add more quality because they have the cheque book to do it. To buy is always a risk - but I think they will be stronger if they buy.
"We have some players who deserve to play more but do not get the games they deserve. If Carlos Vela can get [more] games somewhere we would loan him out. We have too many strikers at the moment."
Wenger also confirmed that Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey would immediately return from his loan spell with Championship side Nottingham Forest.
"Ramsey will definitely come back," he said. "He did not get the number of games [at Forest] that he, or we, wanted because of the snow. He's not completely ready yet but he should be in February."

Liverpool owners have already begun search for Hodsgon's permanent replacement

Published 23:00 31/12/10 By David Anderson

Roy Hodgson last night edged closer to the Anfield exit as the club's American owners began the search for his successor.
Hodgson is on the brink going into today's clash with Bolton and John W Henry and Tom Werner want to have a replacement lined up if they decide to wield the axe.
They are reluctant to name a caretaker boss, such as the Kop's hero Kenny Dalglish, and would prefer to make a permanent appointment.
Henry and Werner want a young, dynamic manager and have started drawing up their shortlist, which is believed to include Owen Coyle, Frank Rijkaard, Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp and Porto boss Andre Villa Boas.

As they launched their search, the beleaguered Hodgson apologised to Liverpool fans for his attack on the Kop.
Henry and Werner were unimpressed by Hodgson's dig at the supporters for turning on him during the defeat to Wolves and the Reds boss has been shocked by the backlash against him.
Hodgson cut a contrite figure yesterday as he insisted he had not meant to offend anyone with his jibes that the "famous Anfield support hasn't really been there" and that "fans should be supporters".
He said: "I'm disappointed with that and I certainly regret if I have offended them in any way. It was no way meant to be an offensive comment on my part. In fact, it was a purely defensive comment.
"I'm fully aware that to get the best out of that support, you have to give them something to look forward to supporting and we certainly didn't do that on Wednesday night. I would have been very surprised if the reaction had been any different to what it was.
"I hope there is no backlash against me because I didn't set out to attack the fans. I had to answer the question about how I felt about being the butt of their jeers and whilst empathising with them, I also tried to defend my position."
Hodgson will discover at 3pm today if the Kop have accepted his apology when he walks out for Liverpool's showdown with Bolton and he insists he can win the fans over.
"Everything is retrievable if the team plays well," he said. "That's the bottom line.
"Fans want to see their team win and we've got to start winning. We've got to start playing well again and if we do, I'm sure the fans will be happy with what they see."
Despite being on the brink at Liverpool, Hodgson accepts the intense pressure and claims the club's success is more important than his future.
"It's my job to get on with it and do my best possible not to allow individual or personal matters, like my own future, to get in the way of what is most important," he said. "And that is Liverpool winning football matches."

Bruce vows to lay off the pies and beer in order to stop 'fat bastard' chants

Published 23:00 31/12/10 By Simon Bird

Steve Bruce set his sights on being at Sunderland for the long haul as he turned 50 yesterday.... and he's got a New Year plan to stopping rivals fans calling him a Fat Head.
Bruce, who has a season and a half left on his contract, has thanked low profile owner Ellis Short for his continued backing during 2010 when Sunderland set a new transfer record buying Asamoah Gyan for £13 million.
The Wearside boss suffered his first boos at the Stadium of Light when his side blew the chance to reach the top six by losing to Blackpool this week - but that has not hit his determination to build the club further.
Bruce has also made a New Year's resolution to stop eating pork pies and beer from his fridge when he is feeling stressed - so that rival fans will stop calling his a "fat bastard."

And he aims to make Sunderland a more weighty proposition in the top flight, with the number of kids in his squad keeping him feeling young and on his toes.
He said: "Our owner wants to win. He is a right competitor, and we are thankful for the tools he's given us this season. For what he has done in the last two or three years and the way he conducts himself, maybe he is a lesson to most.
"He came up to our hotel at Fulham the other week and you don't get to where he is in life without being competitive. The one thing is that he lets me manage and he has entrusted in Niall Quinn the welfare of the club. If you look at where Sunderalnd were, and where they are now..... That says everything.
"He is interested in the team. He asks about the lads but he has never interfered. All he has ever done is back me. That is important. I am very fortunate.
"If they (the club) come to me I will gladly go and speak to them about extending new contract but I haven't had any conversations about it just yet. But if they want to that is fine. You let your gaffer come to you don't you."
Bruce is less enamoured about his latest birthday yesterday: "18 months ago I look fresh-faced and ready for the challenge come back to North East and we have had the worst two winters in history. It has aged me enormously! 50... Jesus. Unbelievable.
"I'm going to lose some weight if I can, stay out of the pub! Its when I'm under pressure, when I open the fridge, beers, pork pies anything. I do like a pork pie with a can of beer. Pork sandwiches with a bit of mustard. Marvellous... With mustard, peas pudding and crackling and all that. Mmm.
"But I can't have any mire pork pies - I'm sick of being called a fat bastard wherever I go. So that's my New Year's Resoluton not to be called Fat Head. I don't go on the scales anymore - I am that frightened."
But after fielding a midfield all younger than 22 against Blackpool, he said: "I have tried to bring young lads in and yes they do keep me feeling young. They are a good bunch here. They have been terrific and even the other day the huge disappointment against Blackpool, was evident, they were absolutely gutted when they came in. It was fluke.
"The average age is 23 and there are times we are a bit naive but I would rather have it that way with what we have got. A young spirited group who can only get better. If I can one of two bits of business in terms of real quality then I think that is the way forward."
Bruce is searching for a left winger with unsettled Villa star Stewart Downing and Charles N'Zogbia on his radar.

Clarke 'honoured' to captain Australia

Australia vice-captain Brad Haddin says Michael Clarke is the right man to lead the side in Ricky Ponting's absence despite his lack of support with fans.
Clarke will captain Australia in next week's final Ashes Test in Sydney with Ponting out because of a broken finger.
Haddin brushed off the results of a supporters' poll, which gave Clarke a 15% approval rating.
"The public reaction to all our players changes from week to week," he said. "Michael will do Australia proud."
Haddin added: "You're one good innings away - or sometimes one good cover drive away - from the support being with you."
TOM FORDYCE'S BLOG
It should be the pinnacle of Michael Clarke's career - captaining his country for the first time, in his home town, against the old enemy in an Ashes Test. Except it doesn't quite feel like the celebration or the coronation that it should

England's victory in Melbourne on Wednesday ensured they retained the Ashes, but Australia can still draw the series with a victory in the Sydney Test, which starts at 2330 on 2 January.
Like Ponting, Clarke has been horribly out-of-form with the bat all series (148 runs in seven innings), while his captaincy of the Twenty20 and one-day sides, and celebrity lifestyle, have been criticised by the Australian media.
But according to Haddin, who has risen through Australia's ranks with Clarke, the 29-year-old has the support of the whole squad.
"We're 100% behind him," said Haddin. "He's the best man for the job now Ricky's out.
"I've played most of my first-class cricket with Michael and he deserves to be Australia captain.
"He's got a very good cricket brain. He's ready to do this job and he'll do a very, very good job."
On top of the leadership changes, Australia are likely to hand debuts to two young players in Sydney - batsman Usman Khawaja and spinner Michael Beer.
But Haddin said the focus would be on the task in hand rather than building for the future.

Usman Khawaja eager for Australia debut

Asked what the team's approach would be now that the chance to regain the urn had gone, Haddin replied: "To win - plain and simple.
"We're bitterly disappointed with losing the Ashes and we can't hide behind that.
"It still hurts but with sport these days you've got to get over it pretty quick and move on.
"We have lost the Ashes but we can still draw the series.
"The bottom line is we've got to win this Test match to get the series back to 2-2."

Beckham will bring title-winning belief to my young Spurs stars, says Redknapp

Published 23:00 31/12/10 By Darren Lewis

Get ready for debate, drama and excitement - the David Beckham circus is coming back to the Premier League.
The 35-year-old midfielder is odds-on to rejoin the club where he started his career to give yet another twist to football's never-ending story.
Beckham is Tottenham's number one January target, confirms Redknapp
Becks, who played on loan at AC Milan last season, needs games to maintain his fitness and prove he is still good enough to play for England.

Harry Redknapp believes his players can learn from the drive, determination and never-say-die attitude of the six-times title-winning, last-gasp Champions League-clinching, World Cup veteran.
And the Spurs boss used Beckham's refusal to rest on the laurels that his multi-million pound lifestyle have earned him to illustrate just what he would bring to White Hart Lane.
Redknapp said: "Doesn't it tell you something about the boy that he lives in LA - he might be a billionaire.
"I have heard stories about how much he earns and it is mind-blowing. He could buy any football club in this country if he wanted to.
"And there he is. He has three months where he can go back to Los Angeles, have a bit of sunshine and enjoy the life, but he wants to come and play football.
"He wants to come over here and play for three months. He ain't doing it for the money. That tells you everything about him - he wants to come here and play.
"He could sit there in his fantastic house with a pool, enjoy his life for a few months - but he wants to come over in the freezing cold and play football.
"He'd only be a loan till March, so it is not long. But he'd give the place a lift."
Beckham's potential arrival means he is set for a Champions League clash against Milan, the team he played for last season.
It remains to be seen, however, whether he would feature in the club's home game against former club Manchester United on January 16, given that Becks has always maintained he would not play against the Reds in the Premier League.
Redknapp, however, maintains he is more interested in the impact the legendary midfielder would have on his rising stars.
He added: "Having him around the young players as well would be great. I read the other day about Theo Walcott and how he spent time on the training ground with him practicing with England.
"You need people like that around you. He has been a fantastic player and is someone the players would look up to and respect. He could still do a job, for sure, if he is over his injuries and he is as fit as he thinks he is."
Although he maintained Beckham would have to earn his place in the team ahead of winger Aaron Lennon, Redknapp appeared genuinely excited at the prospect of Gareth Bale on one wing and the former England skipper on the other.
The Spurs boss has been adamant that his young charges - currently on a ten-game unbeaten run - can punch their weight in the title race.
Redknapp is convinced that Beckham would play a major part in injecting that belief into his squad. He went on: "He would be someone to have around the place that would bring that bit of belief. And he is a proper professional as well.
"He is always spot on and he would be a good influence on everybody for a few months. He'd have to fight for his place, he's not going to play every game he knows - he'd know - that. But he could come on and play a few positions for you.
"He keeps the ball, he doesn't give the ball away, he can score goals, he can make goals.
"It would be good for Aaron, I am sure Aaron would love to work with him on his crossing, or his final ball. He would be a good influence around the place, for sure.
As for the cynics who believe the former England captain is past it, Redknapp insisted: "He had no pace when he was 17.
"But he always had a great brain, he is an excellent crosser of the ball, a striker, a worker. So it is not as if he has suddenly lost blistering pace."

Holloway doesn't want 'obscene' Man City culture at Blackpool

Published 23:00 31/12/10 By Martin Lipton

Ian Holloway does not often feel the need to hand out advice to Roberto Mancini.
But where the Manchester City captain is concerned, the Blackpool boss is happy to make an exception.
Holloway looked on in disbelief at the way Carlos Tevez held Mancini and City at gunpoint earlier this month, showing complete disdain to his club, manager and supporters.
It was the ultimate example, in Holloway's eyes, of what is wrong with the game.

And while the Argentine's reversal saw him handed back the armband and set to face Blackpool at Eastlands this afternoon, for Holloway the South American had demonstrated the sort of attitude that deserves to give footballers a bad name.
Holloway said: "I would hate to have some fella who is not in my team or who I bring off treat me like that.
"At the moment, I am not experienced enough and I would try to fight them or knock them out.
"Looking at the size of some of his lads, I think they would beat me up easily.
"So I am not ready for that. I am ready for these lads and how hard we are working for this cause and I want to keep enjoying it.
"I wouldn't want what Man City have got. Not here. I think it would ruin what we are doing and the people I have got here.
"Now I am more than happy with the position I am in at the moment. I am thoroughly enjoying myself and the lads I have got at the moment give me value for money day in, day out, week in, week out. That is all you can ask."
Holloway's remarkable 2010 ended with the Seasiders occupying eighth spot in the table and a place in the hearts of every true football fan.
But the Blackpool boss knows how swiftly Burnley's fairy-tale turned sour last season and while he leads his team of paupers into the land of the Abu Dhabi princes today, there is no place for envy or jealousy.
"I don't feel that at all," insisted Holloway. "I look at what he's got and I wouldn't want it.
"It's quite obscene the way he has to try and keep all those players happy and I'd rather do what we're doing.
"You have to evolve as a football club and I don't think giving us that sort of money, we would have any sort of chance of evolving.
"I believe in Darwin and evolution. Football clubs evolve and you have to go through a process step by step by step."
Holloway added: "I think the gap between the worse and best players would be too big, you would get egos and all sorts of problems and I don't want that.
'If you go out and your brief is to buy the best player in the world and pay him this and pay him that.
"But what if I don't like him? What if I am told to buy someone and I don't like him and he has a bad attitude?
"It is not right. It doesn't work that way 'I don't want Blackpool to be like that.
"I am happy with Blackpool and we can't change like that. It brings it own problems.
"Now if you are Man City you have to deal with it and well done because they are doing really well with it.
"What I am trying to say to you is I like the stability of clubs that have been successful.
"If you like at Bayern Munich, look at Manchester United and Arsenal - although they have faded a little bit because they have not won something
for some years - but there is structure to what they are doing.
"I think progress has to be an evolution, not overnight change. That didn't do the dinosaurs any good did it? I don't think it will do football any good either.
"You have to evolve into a football club that is run correctly. Once you do that I guarantee you'll have success."

Edin Dzeko link with Manchester City 'just speculation', says Brian Kidd

Manchester City assistant manager Brian Kidd has played down the club's links with a move for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

Reports suggested that City had already begun talks with the Bosian, with a figure of around €35 million said to be touted.

The transfer window reopens next month but City are yet to go on the record to confirm this interest, with Kidd the latest figure to cool the rumours.

"At the moment it is just speculation," he said. "The window hasn't opened. It's the usual story isn't it, 'No buy, no sell, no tales to tell.' At the moment it's just speculation with a lot of players being thrown in the pot.

"There is only one man who decides that, and that's the boss [Roberto Mancini]. I don't think it's right to speak about other players at other clubs."

While Kidd refused to say whether Dzeko was a target, he did concede that the club are interested in "exploring" the transfer market.

City are currently level on points with Manchester United at the top of the Premier League but have considerably more transfer muscle than any of their title rivals.
"We know we aren't the finished article, even though we are playing quite well," Kidd said.
"The boss will want the best because he wants to be a winner, and the club wants to be a winner. We will explore every avenue.
"It's about getting the right players, what positions are we looking for? The boss will decide that. If he feels he can improve the squad, if there is a player available, then I think he will explore that. But the lads have done very well.
"I wouldn't swap our squad now for anybody in the Premier League, to be honest. I wouldn't swap any of our lads for anybody else in the top four or five in the league."

Losing captaincy helped England win Ashes - Pietersen

Pietersen resigned the captaincy after coach Peter Moores was sacked

Kevin Pietersen believes it was for the "good of English cricket" he lost the England captaincy and coach Peter Moores was sacked two years ago.
Pietersen says successors Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower "need all the plaudits for an unbelievable 18 months", including a double Ashes win.
After England retained the Ashes, the batsman said: "We would not be here today if I had not done what I did.
"I got rid of the captaincy for the good of English cricket."
Victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne saw England retain the urn for the first time in 24 years, and a draw in the final Test in Sydney would bring a series win in Australia for the first time since 1987.
Strauss and Andy Flower need all the plaudits for an unbelievable 18 months and an unbelievable preparation for this team

Kevin Pietersen

"There is no way in this world that we would have succeeded under that regime and won the Ashes again in Australia after 24 years," said Pietersen.
"Strauss and Andy Flower need all the plaudits for an unbelievable 18 months and an unbelievable preparation for this team, and they are the right leadership for this team.
"They are just very good at keeping us level-headed and grounded and solid.
"[Strauss] looks after himself after he has looked after everyone else which is a great quality of a great captain."
Asked if Strauss was a better captain than him, Pietersen replied: "Who knows?
"All I can say is they have done an incredible job, and I am so happy for both of them."

Pietersen was critical of Moores in a report to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after a tour of India in late 2008 and the ECB reacted by sacking both captain and coach in early 2009, offering the skipper's job to Strauss.
"He [Strauss] gave me the phone call and said: 'The ECB want me to captain; are you OK with that?'," Pietersen recalled.
"I said 'Go for it, Straussy, you're a top man'. I said 'I'm a good mate of yours, go for it, do whatever you need to,' and I've been proved right. It was a good decision by the ECB."
Pietersen was England's best batsmen on the 2006-07 tour of Australia but still shared the ignominy of the 5-0 Ashes whitewash.
Having not scored a Test century for 18 months prior to this tour, he hit a career-best 227 and was named man of the match in England's first victory of the series in Adelaide.
Pietersen has an average of 64.8 from his five innings to date, England's third biggest contributor (324 runs) behind Alastair Cook (577 runs at an average of 115.4) and Jonathan Trott (445 at 111.3).
TOM FORDYCE'S 4TH TEST RATINGS
Pietersen's half-century may not have been the biggest score of England's innings but it continued his side's progress on a potentially tricky second day

"It's the best feeling in my career, nothing beats this," added the 30-year-old, who was also part of the side that won the Ashes at home in 2005 and 2009, although his involvement in the latter was curtailed by injury.
"As an Englishman, winning in England in 2005 was amazing after it had not been done for a certain amount of years, but people always talked about the fact that when you go to Australia it is a different kettle of fish and the last time we came here we got hammered.
"This time we have come here knowing the preparation has been right, knowing what to expect from the crowds, from the public in the street, people in hotels and taxi drivers to players out in the middle.
"We were told to beware of this and we knew what to expect. We always thought we would do a lot better than last time, I was confident of that and that has proved right."

How Birmingham bucked the Midlands slump against United

By Mike Walters in Mirror Football Blog
Published 22:28 28/12/10

All of a sudden, the Premier League table reads like a ransom note in the Midlands.
West Ham are no longer the only clots in claret and blue because their patent has been copied, and translated into French, by Aston Villa.
Wolves are rock-bottom, West Bromwich Albion are sinking and now one of the great unsolved mysteries is what Birmingham City - beaten at home only once in 15 months - are doing up to their waists in the quicksand.
Carling Cup semi-finalists after sorting out the noisy neighbours, amid the friendly fire of exchanging flares and flying seats, before Christmas, Brum have learned to defend their fortress resolutely when the big guns come to town under Alex McLeish.

Not since January 2008, when Chelsea's goalscorer was Claudio Pizarro, had they lost at home to one of the top four, and Manchester United found the Blues a reliably tough nut to crack again.
McLeish was an accountancy student, the life and soul of balance sheets, when an Aberdeen manager named Alex Ferguson persuaded him to give up number-crunching in 1978 and join his crusade at Pittodrie.
That was the year in which Birmingham last beat United, although the 5-1 win at St Andrews did them a fat lot of good: they were relegated at the end of that season anyway.
Big Eck could never have imagined, when he turned his back on spreadsheets and forged Scotland's finest central defensive double act with Willie Miller, that his adventure with the Dons would lead to breaking the Old Firm's stranglehold and glory in Europe against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
So it was a pity that the master and his apprentice could not generate more entertainment between them as they exchanged pleasantries in fluent Glaswegian - subtitles available from all good linguists on Sauchiehall Street - on the touchline last night.
The most enjoyable aspect of the opening 45 minutes was that the fog lifted enough to afford us a decent view of the game; the most disappointing aspect was that the shroud didn't fall again and spare us an unimpaired view of such impoverished scuffling.
As ever, a man called Fergie called the tune - but this time, it was not the godfather of purple noses but Birmingham's industrious midfielder Barry Ferguson in charge of the jukebox.
When the Blues are on song, Ferguson is usually at the heartbeat of their endeavours - and whatever the league table may say, he need have no inferiority complex.
Oh, one other unsolved mystery in the land of strangled vowels: Why was Phil Mitchell from EastEnders refereeing last night's game under the pseudonym Lee Mason?

Yanga yazuiwa kusajili

Ferej Tamim arejea, Makungu aula ZFA

anga kuzuiwa usajili wachezaji wapya iwapo... Friday, 31 December 2010 20:16

Ally Msigwa

Clara Alphonce

Tamim achaguliwa tena Rais ZFA
Friday, 31 December 2010 20:15

Vicky Kimaro
