Manji sasa amtuliza Papic Yanga

Torres: Let me go to Chelsea!

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By David Maddock

It is a prospect that was once not just untenable, but unthinkable.
Yet Liverpool fans should brace themselves this weekend, for the prospect of their idol Fernando Torres being paraded in front of the public on Monday, sporting the blue of Chelsea.
Chelsea have the money to make the deal, and the will is there from both the London club and the player himself to make it happen.
Liverpool have even got a deal done for Torres' replacement Luis Suarez. The £23million price eventually agreed - double Liverpool's initial offer - suggests that extra money is coming from somewhere...and now it seems clear exactly where

Maybe only time - the transfer deadline is 11pm Monday - can stand in the way of Torres leaving Anfield.
As the Mirror exclusively revealed yesterday, Roman Abramovich is prepared, ultimately, to punt as much as £60million in pursuit of the striker who was widely regarded before a recent slump as the best in the world.
Chelsea have now improved their original offer to £45milion with the additional temptation of £10m Daniel Sturridge thrown into the deal.
Torres himself has made it clear that he wants Liverpool's American owners to listen carefully to Chelsea's offer, and give it the consideration and respect he believes it deserves.
The Spanish star has expressed his desire for a new start to Reds boss Kenny Dalglish, and those close to him back in his home country - where he bolted yesterday to spend a weekend out of the firing line - say he wants to go to Chelsea now, rather than in the summer.
There is, surprisingly, unlikely to be quite the resistance from the Liverpool faithful that would have greeted such a prospect even last summer.
There has been a feeling all season that Torres has been angling to get away and his form has been, frankly, poor, with many already expressing the opinion that the club should cash in.
The seeds for such an incredible scenario were sown last summer, when Chelsea first came calling with a speculative offer of £30million.
Torres had become disenchanted at the tail end of the Rafa Benitez regime, but after the departure of the manager and some assurances that a takeover would happen, he was persuaded to stay, despite being keen on the Chelsea move even then.
Crucially, a verbal agreement was given that should a £50million offer come in, then he would be given the chance to listen to it. But that agreement was only due to kick in after a season, and was never written formally into his contract.
Torres was also approached by potential Liverpool buyer Kenny Huang, who suggested he would invest multi-millions in the transfer market if his takeover was successful, and that idea stuck with him (and was never discouraged) as a takeover loomed closer.
Huang though, was not successful, and the new American owners, Fenway Sports Group have been far more pragmatic in their approach to player signings. That has left Torres complaining he somehow feels cheated by the process.
That dissatisfaction is compounded by his anger at what he feels is a failure to put the verbally agreed escape clause into a more solid form, even if Fenway Sports rightly point out the agreement was with the previous regime.
It has left Torres wanting to join Chelsea, and back home in Spain yesterday, his representatives made no attempt to hide that fact to the national media representatives over there.
It is a situation that screams out to be resolved with a sale, especially if the fee proves big enough - as in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo's departure to Real Madrid - to appease the fans.
Logic suggests this skirmish is just the latest in a long war of attrition by Chelsea that is far more likely to lead to a final battleground victory in the summer, when the player has time to confirm what has been apparent for much of this season on the pitch - that his heart lies elsewhere.
To lose a player of that stature will undoubtedly be a bitter blow for Liverpool, but it is one the club has suffered before and emerged all the stronger for. Indeed, current boss Kenny Dalglish is living proof that this famous old club is far bigger than any player.
When Kevin Keegan, at the height of his fame, decided he wanted to experience life abroad and moved to Hamburg in 1977, devastated fans believed the prospect of replacing him was untenable.
But Dalglish arrived in his stead that summer, and wrote his name in Anfield legend, eclipsing even his predecessor's fame in the process. That is a thought that today's fans may wish to cling onto this weekend

The Beckham boys definitely, definitely aren't going to turn into spoiled stage school brats. Definitely.

We lie - it sounds like they might. But they'll still be the coolest stage school brats around, if that obscenely hot daddy of theirs manages to pull this one off.

Apparently, David's been on the phone to his mate Usher about arranging dance lessons for Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.

"He's a good friend of mine," shamelessly namedrops Usher. "I got a call from David about two months ago and we were catching up. One of the things we talked about was that he wanted to have his sons have dance lessons. He wanted to start them off in LA and I said I'd help. He thought it would be fun for them."

It would be even more fun if the foetus in Victoria's tum-tum joined in too, although we like to think that he/she/probably he is already spending his/her/probably his time in Posh's nice cosy womb perfecting the infamous Spice Girls zig-a-zig-ah pointy hand wiggle thing.
So, um, like, well, yeah: in a rather awkward shift in subject matter, Usher then starts talking about... so, um, like, well, yeah, we're just gonna say it, we're supposed to be adults after all... his potentially massive penis. And David's. Well, we say awkward, but frankly we'd always rather talk about what lurks in David's pants than some lame-o dancing children.

"I'm surprised people say David and I are well endowed because of what they see when I'm on stage and David in his underwear ads," Usher volunteers, sadly without producing any kind of helpful visual aid. "How would I know? We're friends but not like that. We don't have pyjama parties and stuff."

We're pretty sure it's only men who fantasise about what erotic and entirely imaginary delights go down (eww) at a "girls night in" but we still feel a little disappointed.

Adam camp fume at "cheap-skate" Blackpool after new Kop bid is turned down

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By Alan Nixon

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has made a new £6.5million bid to sign Charlie Adam.
But Blackpool have turned down the offer, to the anger of their skipper.
And Adam's father, Charlie senior, blasted the Seasiders and supremo Karl Oyston for wrecking the move and claimed it is a ‘revenge' attack because of the bad blood between the player and the club.
He raged: "Blackpool are such a cheap-skate club.

"I don't even think this is about money. It's because Charlie took them to a tribunal over the bonus they owed him. This is their pay-back. They are saying ‘you won't make anything out of this, we have got you under contract'.
"Liverpool's offer is THIRTEEN times what Blackpool paid for Charles. And they are turning it down? They have been more than compensated for him already.
"Mr Oyston has got to realise it is somebody's life and future that he is dealing with here. I think it is petty. This should be a time for common sense to prevail."
Dalglish increased his opening package deal for the Scottish midfielder in a desperate bid to bring the playmaker to Anfield before the window shuts.
But Ian Holloway's club rejected the increased deal, despite the cash being £6m more than they paid for Adam when he joined from Rangers just 18 months ago.
Blackpool want closer to £12m – as Mirror Sport revealed – and are refusing to budge.
Transfer-seeking Adam is demanding that Holloway and the other club officials sell him, and is complaining of being ‘blanked'.
Adam senior – himself a former player – claimed Holloway had told his son that Liverpool were an ‘exception' to his rule about where he could go.
He added: "Blackpool have been looking at other players. They could do without Charlie be safe."
Oyston has rubbished Holloway's bid to quit.
Holloway threatened to resign over the Premier League's decision to fine Blackpool £25,000 for playing an understrength side in the 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa in November.
Oyston hauled Holloway into his office and told him to get on with preparing his side for next week's clash with West Ham.
He said: "I would fight to the death to keep him, he has done fantastically.
"It would be ridiculous if Ian felt compelled to resign because of what is an unjust decision."

Bolton lost out on Vela deal due to agent "fixing" fee

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By Football Spy

Bolton boss Owen Coyle pulled out of signing Arsenal ace Carlos Vela, after his agent demanded a fee for "fixing" the loan.
The manager hoped to land the Mexican striker today after Arsene Wenger agreed the move.
But Coyle cancelled the transfer after Vela's adviser asked for a six-figure sum on top of the cash that was being paid for the player's wages – and a loan fee to Arsenal

Abramovich takes personal charge of Torres pursuit

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By Martin Lipton

Roman Abramovich has taken personal charge of Chelsea's stunning pursuit of Fernando Torres in a fundamental restatement of intent by the Stamford Bridge owner.
Abramovich is believed to have been riled by suggestions that he has lost interest in the club over the past two years and concentrating on his business and personal commitments as well as Russia's 2018 World Cup success.
But the billionaire's decision to take the lead in the hunt to bring Torres to Chelsea is understood to be the first step in a new and even more sustained commitment to getting the Blues back where Abramovich wants them to be.
Abramovich has previously sanctioned statements by the club about seeking to meet UEFA's looming Financial fair Play requirements.

But with Manchester City riding roughshod over the new rules already, getting Torres to play alongside Didier Drogba in a partnership Carlo Ancelotti last night suggested was no more than "a dream" is just the beginning of a return to the Chelsea of the early Abramovich era.
Chelsea also remain confident that Benfica defender David Luiz will also sign by Monday's deadline, despite the Portuguese cub announcing they have told the country's Stock Excahnge the deal is off. Negotiations are expected to continue over the weekend.
The Russian, determined to be more hands on in future, wants to rebuild a strong team, under Ancelotti, with Torres as the spearhead of that new side.
This transfer strategy, which suggests a significant summer outlay, will be directed by a new sporting director who will replace outgoing Frank Arnesen but also operate in the manner of former chief executive Peter Kenyon.
Torres seems to have been persuaded that the new Chelsea vision is the right one, despite Liverpool's £23m capture of Ajax frontman Luis Suarez.
And while Ancelotti was exasperated by repeated questions about Torres and Drogba, the Spaniard's desire to quit Anfield for pastures Blue will allow the Italian to make the tactical switches his current squad prevents him from doing.
Ancelotti conceded last week that even if he wanted to change tactics from the 4-3-3 that has become the Chelsea blueprint, he does not have a squad that makes it possible.
Signing Torres would change all that, giving him twin spearheads, one power and strength, the other lithe instinct. Perhaps, indeed, a dream team.
It is unquestionable, too, that Torres is a player Ancelotti wants as much as Abramovich.
In the summer Chelsea were only playing at it, tabling a £30million bid they must have known would be rejected, little more than making a public signal to the striker that they wanted him.
Now, suddenly, it is very different. Ancelotti added: "When we try to do something we speak together and make the decision. I knew about the bid.
"Drogba doesn't have a problem with what has happened. In general Drogba can play with anybody, including Torres. He doesn't have a problem.
"Drogba can play with everyone. He has to play up front, of course. But the pitch is wide.
"Now I don't have to say anything to Didier or Nicolas Anelka. They're Chelsea players and they have to play.
"They're in good form, above all Didier. The malaria is gone and he showed he was in fantastic condition at Bolton. From now to the end of the season, he will be fantastic."

McLeish ready to unleash transformed Zigic on Coventry

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By James Nursey

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish will unleash Nikola Zigic on Coventry today after deciding against selling the Serb.
Zigic, 30, struggled to adapt to English football since a £6million summer switch from Valencia.
But the striker came off the bench at half-time to turn the game in *Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final win over West Ham.
McLeish has now told Racing Santander he will be staying at St Andrew's.

McLeish admitted: "There have been noises from Spain. But with the big man like he was against West Ham, I don't want him going anywhere."
Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd saw City's heroics to reach the cup final and said: "If they've a hangover we have to take advantage, and if they don't we have to be ready to deal with their strengths because there are many."

Torres bound for Blues amid broken promises at Anfield

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By David Maddock and Martin Lipton

Fernando Torres is on the verge of a record-breaking £60million move to Chelsea last night after he told Liverpool he wants to go.
The striker informed boss Kenny Dalglish he wants to move and sources in Spain suggest he is considering making a statement requesting a transfer and explaining his reasons.
In addition, his representatives have written to Anfield's American owners bluntly stating the reasons why he should be allowed to leave.
The memo outlines how Torres feels he has been let down over promises made in the summer, when he claimed he was loyal to the club in the face of strong interest from Chelsea, because of the false vision of the future he was sold.

Liverpool wasted no time in reacting to the demand, with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli travelling to Amsterdam to secure the capture of Luis Suarez by tellingly doubling his original offer for the Ajax star.
The Reds will pay £23million for a player they valued at only £12m two days ago and have offered him a four-year contract worth in excess of £15m.
The Uruguay World Cup star admitted: "I have got a lot to thank Ajax for, but everyone must understand I really want to go to Liverpool because this is a dream come true."
Now the only thing that stands in the way of Torres leaving for Chelsea are negotiations over a price acceptable to the Merseyside club and the close of the transfer window on Monday night.
MirrorSport revealed exclusively that Chelsea's owner Roman Abramovich wants to make a definitive statement by bringing Torres to the club and is prepared to go eventually to £60m to get his man.
An exploratory offer of £40m was rejected, but Chelsea have immediately decided to increase that bid by another five million, with young striker Daniel Sturridge thrown in.
That could be enough to persuade owners Fenway Sports Group to sell, but £50m plus £10m-rated Sturridge – a player that Liverpool wanted to take on loan this season – will certainly seal the deal.
Sources at Stamford Bridge say they have the desire to make it happen and Liverpool will feel they have no option to accept when the price reaches that tipping point, because of the player's desire to go.
Torres only stayed at Anfield in the summer after a summit meeting with former boss Roy Hodgson in Ibiza, when he was swayed by promises of a rosy future, which simply have not materialised.
Now he is no longer prepared to wait for the Liverpool masterplan to come to fruition.
Liverpool fans were stunned by the developments yesterday, but even among Torres' most ardent supporters, there is a feeling that a player who no longer has his heart in Anfield should be allowed to go.
With the transfer deadline looming, there is little time for such a massive deal to be completed.
But the feeling at Anfield last night was that the Spaniard may well have kicked his last ball for the club.

Ince hoping to get another rise out of old foe Mancini

Published 22:45 28/01/11 By James Nursey

Paul Ince hopes Roberto Mancini sees red at Notts County after an infamous clash in Serie A saw the Man City boss banned for SIX games.
Former Sampdoria midfielder Mancini, 46, was hit with a huge suspension in Italy for scything down Ince against Inter Milan 15 years ago.
Mancini initially totally lost it with referee Marcello Nicchi after being denied a penalty and was dragged away by Inter goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca.
Mancini flung off his captain's armband and stormed to the dug-out to tell boss Sven Goran Eriksson he was never going to play again.

Eriksson persuaded him to return but Mancini was soon sent off for a lunge at Ince after just 34 minutes and banned for six games.
Ince, 43, has brushed off the incident but has not forgotten Mancini's fabulous skills.
And the Notts County boss hopes his League One side get Mancini and money-bags City hot under the collar again tomorrow.
"Sounds like the six-match ban was deserved," smiled Ince.
"I do remember playing against him in Italy. He nut-megged me about three or four times.
"I was told to do a man-to-man job on him and the first couple of minutes I went down the back of his legs, which he wasn't too pleased about.
"But the next 15 minutes he nut-megged me three or four times so I went and marked someone else.
"He was a great player. His awareness and the goals he scored meant he was a pleasure to play against.
"I would throw his name into the ring as one of the best players I played against."
Ince also respects Mancini's work as boss at Eastlands - comparing his no-nonsense style to Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ince added: "I also like him as a manager - he reminds me of a younger Alex Ferguson, the way Mancini is.
"He won't take any rubbish and he will do it his way."
Ince and Mancini bumped into each other at a recent reserve game between Liverpool and City and Mancini knows his superstars are in for a tough afternoon at Meadow Lane.
"We talked about the pitch and he said the pitch is not good at Notts County," said Mancini.
"I have watched Notts County and I think it will be a difficult game because they play very compact, they are aggressive and play long balls for the striker.
"I know very well the FA Cup and you can lose to a team who plays in the third or fourth division so we must play at 100 per cent. We must be ready to fight for every ball. In Italy it was different, but here, if you are not ready to fight for every ball you are taking a risk."
Meanwhile, Lee Hughes is ready to face Joleon Lescott tomorrow - seven months after the pair were in a summer kick-about abandoned due to a brawl.
League One County striker Hughes,34, revealed he was up against defender Lescott as recently as last June in an unofficial friendly.
The duo were in different teams comprised of professionals who met up at Aston Villa's training ground.
But the match was called off after Lescott's brother Aaron, who plays for Walsall, and ex-England midfielder Lee Hendrie sparked a fight.
Brummie Hughes revealed: "In the summer we had a little friendly game at Aston Villa's training ground between friends.
"Darius Vassell played, Lee Hendrie, Micah Richards, Luke Rogers and a few others, it was 11 a-side.
"Joleon marked me but our team won.
"It was just between the lads from around Birmingham.
"It was to get a bit of fitness up before we went back for pre-season training.
"But it got a little bit tasty. I turned around, there was a bit of scuffle and that was it - the game was ended."

Hammer Gabbidon close to Cardiff homecoming

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By Football Spy

Cardiff are close to a deal to bring Wales and West Ham star Danny Gabbidon home.
The versatile defender has fallen out of favour at Upton Park since the 5-0 thrashing at Newcastle on January 5 and has lost his place to Wayne Bridge, on loan from Manchester City. He is out of contract this summer after failing to agree a new contract with Avram Grant's strugglers.
That has opened the door for Cardiff boss Dave Jones to snap up the 37-times capped player – who spent the five years to 2005 with the Bluebirds – in a £250,000 deal.
Jones said: "I'm still looking to bring in two more players."

Friedel wants silverware on the mantelpiece over personal accolades

Published 23:00 28/01/11 By James Nursey

Aston Villa's veteran keeper Brad Friedel wants silverware instead of personal accolades as he targets the FA Cup.
The USA star, 39, is set to become Villa's oldest ever player next week.
But he would love to knock his old club Blackburn out of the Cup and win a trophy in England to add to the 2002 League Cup with Rovers.
Friedel, signed from Ewood Park in 2008, said: "When it's all over I am sure I will look back on the highlights of my career. But hopefully there will be another highlight in the future."

Michel Salgado says Cup glory with Rovers will top his Champions League success with Real Madrid. The veteran Spanish defender helped Real become champions of Europe in 2000 and 2002.
He said: "If you play 10 years with Real, you're going to have a chance to win a Champions League. But it's more difficult to come here and try to raise a trophy. It would be a dream if we could."
