Carlos Tevez to captain Manchester City in FA Cup final if fit

• Striker must first prove fitness against Spurs on 10 May
• Mancini says Tevez is not getting preferential treatment

Roberto Mancini has confirmed Carlos Tevez will captain Manchester City in the FA Cup final against Stoke City if he proves his fitness in time to play. The Argentina striker has just returned to Manchester after receiving treatment in Milan from Daniel Martínez, a doctor with his national team, and Mancini is targeting the game against Tottenham Hotspur, four days before the FA Cup final, as the ideal occasion for Tevez to return after a hamstring injury.
"It is difficult to say if Carlos will play in the final, but it will only happen if he can come back against Tottenham first," the City manager said. "It is very important Carlos is 100% recovered, not 60% or 70%. Now he is back in training with us and he has started running again. We will do everything so he can recover."
City have been competently captained in the last few weeks by Vincent Kompany, but the defender has already said he would not a have a problem stepping down should Tevez return for Wembley, and Mancini explained the captaincy will revert to Tevez as soon as he resumes playing.
Having handed Tevez the armband in the first place to help him make up his mind about staying at the club, Mancini is not about to change tack now, even though the player has so far refused to commit his future to the club and made his own decision to seek treatment in Italy, where naturally he has been linked with other clubs.
Not altogether convincingly, Mancini denied his star player was getting special treatment. "I can respect his decision to seek out a doctor he knows and trusts," he said. "As he is the doctor of a national team we can trust him too. When all your players come from different countries it is hard to tell them not to do this or not to go there.
"What is important now is that he is back with us and working hard to be fit. Everyone here wants to be in the Champions League next season, and to do that we have to fully concentrate on our remaining games."
Mancini denied speculation that Tevez staying at City was dependent on securing a place in the Champions League next season, but said talks about the player's future, along with other matters such as team-strengthening, would commence only once the club's European status for next season was known. "After we know about the Champions League we can talk about everything," Mancini said. "I don't think Carlos is waiting to see whether we finish fourth or not, but that is my own priority and we are very close now."
So close, in fact, that failure to hold on to a four-point advantage over Spurs would count against Mancini to such an extent he would be likely to lose his job. He has other options in Italy should that happen, but insists he wishes to remain at City and see the task through. "First of all I have to concentrate on getting into the Champions League, then I have a contract to see out," he said. "It has been difficult, these last 18 months, but most of the hard work is now done and it will be easier from now on. I would be extremely disappointed to have to leave the next stage to someone else. Once we get into the Champions League we can improve further, but to do that we must get the maximum from our remaining games, step by step beginning with West Ham on Sunday."
On a separate note, with City about to appeal to their supporters to refrain from using the word "Munichs" in chants mentioning Manchester United, Mancini has asked fans to respect their neighbours and the memory of the 1958 air crash. "I did not hear the chants at Blackburn, but have been told of the situation," Mancini said, referring to City supporters using "Munichs" as a derogatory term in a chant celebrating Yaya Touré's winning goal against United at Wembley. "We should have respect for what happened many years ago. Rivalry is good on the pitch, but should be only on the pitch."

Pulis is full of pride at the Potters' achievement in clinching a Wembley meeting with Manchester City in three weeks. But he knows it is only the icing on the cake compared to Stoke staying part of the top flight and becoming a force at that level.

Pulis, whose side entertain Wolves in a re-arranged game on Tuesday night, said:
"We are absolutely delighted that we've got to an FA Cup final. It's an absolutely brilliant achievement by the club.
"But the priority will always be the Premier League.
"That's where we want to play, and the longer we are in the Premier League the club will grow because it will give us the finances to make it a stronger club.
"We are in the black, we have just built a brand new training ground, we are investing into other areas of the football club we would have never dreamt of if we hadn't got into the Premier League.
"The Premier League is the food and drink and the icing on the cake is the cup competitions."
Stoke are on the verge of guaranteeing a fourth successive season of Premier League football after Saturday's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa took them to the 39-point mark.
Pulis said: "We have five more games to go and we've said all along we have to try to get as many points as we can from the games left."
The Stoke boss believes striker Kenwyne Jones is back to his best after a lean spell and he scored the opener at Villa Park with a superb header.
Pulis said: "I think he has 10 goals now this season. He's hitting form at the right time.
"Forwards go up and down. Rooney had one spell earlier in the season. He's got quality and eventually you know that will come through."
Pulis is facing an anxious wait to determine the extent of the Achilles injury suffered by another striker, Ricardo Fuller, after he appeared as a substitute at Villa. Fuller had to be stretchered off amidst fears the injury may have shattered his Wembley dreams, and is due to have a scan in the next 24 hours.
But Pulis said: "Let's see what the scans say first before we start throwing positives or negatives at it. Then we'll take a view."
Stoke midfielder Rory Delap said:
"It didn't look good after the game. We are all devastated if it is what everyone thinks it is.
"You never know with the scan but we are all thinking of him and we know how devastated he is.
"He's been a big part of this club and it will be devastating if Ricardo misses the final."

The FA will not punish Manchester United after a dressing room wall was damaged following their FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley.

A hole was kicked in the wall of the United dressing room after Manchester City had triumphed 1-0 and emergency repairs had to be carried out so the room could be used by Stoke City the following day.
There have been suggestions that the FA would send the repair bill to United or write to the club reminding them of their responsibilities. But according to FA sources a decision has been taken to let the matter lie.
It is also unlikely for there to be any disciplinary action for the incident at the end of Saturday's game when Rio Ferdinand and other United players were involved in an angry confrontation with Mario Balotelli.

You gotta be Hulk(not Porto Hulk) to kick a hole in the wall in the dressing rooms that I remember from my days playing youth football. That was a long time ago though, and nowadays it's all bout compostie cheap materials.

I guess City can make a picture of that wall into a billboard like ManU's "time clock"...
I actually respect ManU more now. Nice to know they get upset enough to care and take it out on a wall vs the ref, pitch, stars not in alignment, etc.

Mancini ready to remove banner

Roberto Mancini has urged his Manchester City side to force Manchester United fans to tear down the banner they use to taunt their neighbours.
City are on the brink of lifting their first trophy since 1976 after beating United in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley to set up a May 14 showdown with Stoke.

Supporters at Old Trafford never tire of reminding their city rivals of the length of their silverware drought, annually updating a banner that hangs at the Stretford End with the length of time it has been since they last won anything.
It recently ticked around to 35 years and City boss Mancini said: "They can take off this banner. We hope we can take it off this year."
City cleared a huge psychological hurdle on Saturday by reaching their first cup final since 1981 and doing so with a victory over their fiercest rivals.
Mancini said: "Our mentality will be more strong because we beat United - and United played with their best team.
"(They were) without (Wayne) Rooney, but we played without (Carlos) Tevez.
"You can win against them only if you play very strong, you play very concentrated.
"If not, it's a difficult day. They win because they have more experience.
"But now, if we work, we can arrive very, very close to them."
He added: "The final will be harder because probably we will go in the final and we are favourite.
"In 90 minutes, anything can happen. If we play with the same spirit, we can win. If not, we don't win."
If City do win the FA Cup, they will doubtless be accused of buying their way into the footballing elite.
City became the richest club in the world overnight when Sheik Mansour took them over two and a half years ago and have since embarked on an unprecedented £300million spending spree.
That investment will begin to pay off if City beat Stoke at Wembley but it will also increase resentment among supporters of other clubs, something manager Mancini insists is unjustified.
Pointing out Chelsea and United had also paid huge transfer fees in pursuit of success, Mancini argued there was more negativity towards City's spending.
He added: "Many times I've been asked about our spending but we didn't buy Cristiano Ronaldo, (Lionel) Messi. We bought young players, good players."
Mancini, who spent around £125million last summer alone, added: "All these players need to improve because it's the first year they're playing in the Barclays Premier League."

Madrid looks to league to ease European woe

Real Madrid must quickly forget its Champions League setback if it wants to keep pressure on Barcelona as the Spanish leader homes in on a third straight league title as both clubs come up against teams battling to avoid the drop.
Barcelona took a big step toward reaching the Champions League final in an ill-tempered 2-0 semifinal first-leg win at Madrid on Wednesday.
Madrid trails Barcelona by eight points with five matches to play starting Saturday against Zaragoza, which is battling to avoid relegation.

Madrid shouldn't have problems with Zaragoza although morale may be low as the club has little hope of reaching its first European final since 2002. Although the league is still in sight, Madrid knows the possibility is slim with a Copa del Rey triumph over Barcelona shaping up to be the only silverware of coach Jose Morinho's first season in charge.
Mourinho is likely to rest most of his regulars again and rely on his "B-team" of Kaka, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain after it easily routed third-place Valencia 6-3 last Saturday.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi looks to follow up his brace against Real by adding to his league-leading tally of 31 goals and season tally of 52 when Barcelona plays at Real Sociedad.
The Argentina forward again showed his class with a sublime individual effort as he dashed through Madrid's half and around three defenders before slotting past goalkeeper Iker Casillas for his 179th club goal to move into third all-time at Barcelona.
"It's not the first time he's done this, it's worth noting how lucky we are to have him," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "He's only 23 and he's now the third leading scorer at the club, with its long, long history. That says it all. It's incredible. That's what is beautiful about our game and our football."
Messi did not train with the team on Thursday after appearing to emerge from Wednesday's victory with a leg injury.
Defender Carles Puyol played a 90 minutes for the first time since January, with Barcelona's defense without Eric Abidal, Adriano and Maxwell, who may return from a groin injury. But Guardiola may have to field several youth team players since midfielder Andres Iniesta may also be saved for Tuesday's return leg against Madrid.
Sociedad has seen its impressive first half of the season marred by a second-half slide to sit only three points above Osasuna, which is in the last relegation spot ahead of its game against Valencia on Sunday.
Last-place Almeria could be the first team relegated if it loses to Sevilla on Sunday, depending on other results.
Almeria has lost five straight to trail Zaragoza by 11 points and comes up against a Sevilla team looking to secure its place in next season's Europa League. Sixth-place Sevilla is tied with Atletico Madrid on points, with both trailing Athletic Bilbao by two points.
Bilbao can complicate Espanyol's hopes of finishing in the European places when the pair meet on Monday night. Atletico travels to Deportivo La Coruna, which is just three points above the relegation spots.
In Sunday's other 34th-round games, it's: Levante vs. Sporting Gijo

There is no Barcelona conspiracy, Wenger tells Mourinho

Published 14:42 28/04/11 By MirrorFootball

Arsene Wenger believes the "exceptional" Lionel Messi has all the qualities to be hailed best in the world - but refuses to believe Barcelona cheat their way to success.
Barcelona are set to hold a board meeting later today as the Spanish club consider action against Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho following an ill-tempered Champions League semi-final first leg at the Bernabeu.
Former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager Mourinho last night implied the Catalan giants receive favourable treatment from referees and claimed the club had yet to win a "clean" European title under Pep Guardiola.
The outburst came shortly after Guardiola's side won 2-0 after a late brace from Messi followed the dismissal of Real midfielder Pepe for a challenge on Dani Alves.
Wenger feels the comments were ill-advised.
"It's difficult for me to comment on that because we were involved in a situation like that," said the Arsenal manager, handed a one-match ban by UEFA for hitting out at Swiss referee Massimo Busacca after striker Robin van Persie had been sent off in the Nou Camp for kicking the ball away.
"I refuse to believe that because the day I believe that, it is impossible to manage.
"This season, they [Barcelona] certainly had some advantages. I feel that they were accidental."
Wenger added: "When a manager comes out of a big game like that, and you have a disappointment, you have to accept that you can sometimes that you go a bit too far, but I refuse to believe that there is, let's say, a script behind the stage and that Barcelona is advantaged.
"I feel that they over-react, certainly, but they play certainly the best football at the moment in Europe and you have to give them credit for that."
Messi is a big part of the reason for that.
Wenger guided Arsenal to a famous 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Emirates Stadium on February 16, before eventually losing the last-16 tie in the Nou Camp where Messi was again inspirational.
The Gunners boss cannot help be impressed by the Argentina forward, who scored all four as Arsenal were thrashed in Spain in last season's quarter-finals.
"Messi has qualities that are mental: humility, desire to play, happiness to help the team, always desire, you never see any bad reaction despite all the kicks he gets," said Wenger.
"When you look at the numbers, you have to kneel down and say they are fantastic.
"When a guy scores 52 goals in modern football and 25 assists, when you see how difficult it is to score a goal, you just have to say it is absolutely exceptional what this player is delivering."

We will NOT sell Fabregas, insists Wenger

Arsene Wenger has claimed speculation about Cesc Fabregas' future is "useless".
The Gunners captain gave a controversial interview to a Spanish magazine last week criticising the club's lack of a winning mentality.
And Arsenal blew their final chance of silverware by losing to Bolton in the Premier League on Sunday.
But Wenger said: "We play our game against Manchester United and we are not on the transfer market. We do not want to sell our players. So all the players who have contracts will stay here unless we decide otherwise.

"And we do not think otherwise with Cesc - we want to keep our best players. This is a subject that in fairness that is not very creative. We have answered that in nearly 80 per cent of our press conferences and at some stage it has to stop because the past has shown that this question is useless."

The Real question: Why is Mourinho a bad loser?

PARIS (AP)

Sounding like a stuck record by a lovesick crooner, but repellently sour not sweet, Jose Mourinho wailed why, oh, why? In the warped view of Real Madrid's coach, the dice are stacked in Barcelona's favor. ''They have got great power. The rest of us have no chance,'' he said.
And some of Europe's most respected referees - Mourinho rattled off the names of several of them - are seemingly part of some kind of pro-Barca plot.
Well, Jose, here's the real question: Why are you such a bad loser?
There is simply no excuse for it, and UEFA should now make it painfully clear that his hinted-at conspiracy theories, his mutterings of ''scandalous goings-on'' and suggestion that the European football governing body is cuddly with Madrid's historic rival are unacceptable.
''To win this way must leave a bad taste,'' the self-decreed ''Special One'' said acidly of Barcelona's deserved 2-0 Champions League semifinal victory on Wednesday, showing that he's not so special, after all. Or, to be more precise, not a good sport.
Shame, really, because Mourinho is a fine football coach, with a record of trophies and victories that speaks eloquently of his talents for organizing and motivating players, no matter their nationality or the culture he's operating in. In crafting winning teams in four countries - Portugal, England, Italy and Spain - the multilingual Portuguese has proven himself to be the ultimate European. He seems a nice enough guy, too, who will always have friends in the press box by providing an endless diet of controversy and flashes of charm and wit.
Mourinho, anti-football? Rubbish. There's no such thing. Winning is all that counts. As Arsenal's Arsene Wenger can attest, hoping to out-play or out-pass this Barcelona side is suicide, since the blue and reds so rarely share the ball. Out-foxing them is a more viable option. And Mourinho is as foxy as they come. He need not apologize, especially after the 5-0 Catalan slap in the face that Madrid got last November, for deciding that the only way to beat the Barcelona machine is to break it. Be brutish and defensive, stop them from playing. And Mourinho's scheme looked like it might work before midfielder Pepe's second-half red card opened gaps that Barcelona swarmed into.
One of the true things Mourinho said in his sour-grapes post-match press conference was that Barcelona ''will kill us again'' if Madrid plays an open game in the semifinal second leg at the Camp Nou next Tuesday.
Of course, the millions of viewers worldwide were, undoubtedly naively, hoping that this series of four ''clasico'' encounters in 18 days would prove as classic as the name suggests. But they don't pay Mourinho's handsome wage. It's entirely immaterial to him or his players if they win ugly, so long as they win. Rightly so.
Before he lost his grip on the trophy and dropped it under a bus, Madrid defender Sergio Ramos certainly was nothing but delighted to have won the Copa del Rey on April 20, with Barcelona prevented from scoring thanks in no small measure to Mourinho's bruising tactics. Nor did we hear Inter Milan players protest vociferously about Mourinho's supposed negativity when he led them to the European title last year. Instead, Inter defender Marco Materazzi rewarded Mourinho with a tearful hug.
Take it from Rio Ferdinand, who, of course, wasn't on the Santiago Bernabeu pitch Wednesday night but was, of course, watching, because he'll likely be facing Barcelona next in the Champions League May 28 Wembley final.
''If u seriously would be happy to finish your career with no medals but ya team played good football u are MAD!!'' the Manchester United defender tweeted. ''Great passing teams who win nothing are not remembered.''
But as smart and as pragmatic as Mourinho is, none of those coaching notes that he scribbles during matches could come up with a foolproof plan to thwart Lionel Messi. The utter cheek of his second goal - ghosting past five Madrid players as if they weren't there and placing a perfect shot as his feet slid from under him - made Barcelona the worthy winner.
One cannot plan for such unpredictable genius. In asking over and over ''why'' Barcelona appeared unbeatable, Mourinho should have acknowledged that Messi was the honest answer on this night - not the referee, UEFA or anyone else.
Again, great coach, but Mourinho would be more of a truly special one if he was a better sport, too.

Wayne Rooney has been told a newspaper may have hacked his mobile phone.
On Thursday afternoon the Manchester United striker revealed on Twitter than police had visited him to relay the news.
He said: "Scotland Yard detectives came to see me earlier and showed me some documents" he wrote. "looks like a newspaper have hacked into my phone #Bigsurprise".
Rooney's wife Coleen also tweeted: "Newspapers hacking into phones!! Desperate and Disgusting!!!! X"
A Scotland Yard spokesman was unable to confirm that a meeting had taken place but said it was "up to him" what he wrote on the website.

Dempsey backs Hughes' call for a top 10 finish

Published 16:06 28/04/11 By MirrorFootball

Clint Dempsey believes Fulham have the ability to reach the heady heights of last season under Mark Hughes and has targeted a top-10 finish to the campaign.
The United States international was in majestic form last night, netting twice in the Cottagers' comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Bolton.
Dempsey followed up a stupendous side volley with a bundled effort at Craven Cottage, before Brede Hangeland added a third with a header.
The victory extended Fulham's unbeaten league run at Craven Cottage to seven matches, having last tasted defeat at the hands of London rivals West Ham on Boxing Day.The result left last season's UEFA Europa League finalists facing a potential relegation battle but now they lie ninth in the Barclays Premier League table.
And having all but staved off relegation, Dempsey believes the only way is up.
"I would like to think we could do what we did in the past," he said. "That we could be fighting for Europe and push on from there.
"We got to see the way things go but I don't think [last season] was a fluke. I think we have the quality here and hopefully we can show that.
"I would like to think that [we are safe] but there are still four games left and you don't want to be waiting until the last game and stressing.
"I think we are trying to look up, we are trying to make sure we finish in the top half because we feel that we have the quality in our team that we should be a team in the top half.
"That is the main goal now in our four games left."
The midfielder's brace last night saw him break Fulham's club record for most Premier League goals by a single player, with his 33-goal haul seeing him overtake Steed Malbranque and Brian McBride.
Dempsey admitted he knew about the statistic beforehand but insists scoring for the team was his only concern.
"We come two hours before the game and you find yourself bored and there are programmes lying around so you start reading them", he said.
"I looked at that statistic that if I scored against Wolves that would have tied me with [Brian] McBride and Steed Malbranque.
"It was good to get two tonight and be amongst the company and hopefully I can continue to score goals here."
Asked whether he could join the pair as Fulham cult legends, he added: "I don't know about that.
"That is great if that is what people think, I just come out and try my best to help the team win.
"It has been a good four and a half years that I have been here. I still have two years left and I am enjoying my football."
While Fulham's form has seen them yield 19 points out of a possible 21, Bolton have lost nine of their past 10 away games.
The Trotters still lie in eighth thanks to their superb home form and manager Owen Coyle was keen to focus on the positives rather than the negatives after yet another away loss.
"The progress we have made since coming into the football club, I am probably being repetitive, but we came into the club in the bottom three and favourites for relegation," he said.
"I think we sit eighth in the league at the moment, having spent £2million. You look at the league and there are huge clubs below us, having spent £20 or £30million.
"We are always looking to improve, absolutely, and we can improve our home form as well.
"We have lost a couple of games at home so we can improve on that and then we can improve on the away form, absolutely. That goes without saying.
"But what we will do is do it together and try and move forward."

Dortmund can seal Bundesliga title on Saturday

When Borussia Dortmund last won the Bundesliga title in 2002, it went into the final three games of the season trailing Bayer Leverkusen by five points.
Now, the roles are reversed. It is Dortmund that holds a five-point lead over Leverkusen and a feeling that it might be losing some momentum.
Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller says the players are not worried even though the team has earned only eight points from the last six games and is coming off a loss at then last-place Borussia Moenchengladbach.

"I don't see much of a problem. We have two home games and a difficult one away. We should win at home against Nuremberg and Frankfurt and that's it," Weidenfeller said.
Just to make sure his players realize that nothing has been won yet, coach Juergen Klopp showed them a video of a cyclist raising his arms in celebration, only to fall on his nose before the finish line.
"I find it good that he prepares us for all possibilities but we all know what's at stake," said Weidenfeller, a 30-year-old veteran on the Bundesliga's youngest team. "We should concentrate on our strengths. We are an extraordinary team, with an extraordinary season behind us and we want to have extraordinary end to it."
Dortmund plays Nuremberg on Saturday, then visits Werder Bremen and hosts Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of the season.
Leverkusen has a tough match at Cologne, which is fighting against relegation after losing three straight games. If Leverkusen loses and Dortmund wins, Dortmund will have its seventh championship.
Although it has lost some pace, Dortmund doesn't look likely to lose the title like Leverkusen in 2002.
"We haven't converted enough chances that's our problem. We create enough chances to last us two games but we just haven't scored enough. We need some luck and more confidence in finishing," Weidenfeller said. "Even in the games we've lost we played well and showed our quality."
Weidenfeller has conceded only 19 goals in 31 games and has a chance to break Oliver Kahn's record of 21 from 2008.
Nuremberg still has a chance of clinching a place in the Europa League and won't be traveling to Dortmund just to congratulate Klopp and his players on the title.
Leverkusen, however, should have a more difficult job in Cologne, whose coach Frank Schaefer stepped down this week and will be replaced by sporting director Volker Finke on the bench.
More than looking at the title, Leverkusen is seeking first to secure second place and a direct slot in next season's Champions League.
"Under normal circumstances, Dortmund is not going to allow the title to slip away," Leverkusen's midfielder Hanno Balitsch said. "But we should do our homework if they do falter. ... Dortmund is in a good position, but it's a mental thing too. The pressure is high. We are in a better position there because we have nothing to lose."
Bayern Munich is still hoping to move past Hannover into third place and clinch a qualifying spot for the Champions League. Bayern, which escaped with a lucky 1-1 draw at Frankfurt last weekend, hosts Schalke, which lost 2-0 to Manchester United on Tuesday at home in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.
Schalke has not lost in Munich in three straight Bundesliga games and also won there 1-0 in the German Cup semifinals.
It comes with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in outstanding form and reportedly heading to Munich next season.
Hannover is seven points behind Leverkusen and one point above Bayern before its game against Moenchengladbach, which moved past St. Pauli on goal difference by beating Dortmund.
St. Pauli visits Kaiserslautern on Friday and a loss there would probably send it down. In another game Friday, Wolfsburg visits Bremen hoping to escape from the relegation playoff spot as third from last.
In other games Saturday, Hamburger SV hosts Freiburg, Frankfurt visits Mainz and Hoffenheim plays Stuttgart. There are no games on Sunday.

Bayern confirms interest in Schalke 'keeper Neuer

Bayern Munich's president wants to sign Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer but says he isn't prepared to pay a huge transfer fee for the German international.
Neuer displayed his great talent by making numerous saves in Schalke's 2-0 loss to Manchester United in the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday.
''We haven't conducted any negotiations yet. They will start now,'' Bayern president Uli Hoeness said in Wednesday's edition of Munich TZ newspaper.

''We want Manuel. And if there is a will, there is a way. But Schalke should not start asking for an astronomical price now.''
Neuer has been linked for a long time with a move to Bayern. Earlier this month, Neuer confirmed that he won't be extending his contract when it expires at the end of next season. Schalke will be entitled to a transfer fee if he leaves this offseason or in January.
Neuer was born and grew up not far from Schalke stadium and has played for the club since preschool days. The 25-year-old goalkeeper has not disclosed where he would like to play.
Some German media reports have speculated that Manchester United also may be interested in the goalkeeper.
Horst Heldt, Schalke's sporting director, said after the game against United that it was hard for Neuer's market value to rise.
''It was never low, I am not sure it can even go any higher,'' he said. ''That's one thing. The other is that you sit there and think, 'Why in God's name should you come up with the idea of letting this player go?'''
''I think we have the best 'keeper in the world. But those who are interested have known this from before.''
Heldt stressed that Neuer's contract was valid for another season, saying ''it's the only thing that counts.''
''But I know the rules of the business - if someone offers 100 million, you can't expect me to say that Neuer is not for sale,'' Heldt added.
Meanwhile, Bayern star Arjen Robben said the club could use a few new players - and singled out Neuer as prospective target.
''This season has shown that two or three new players would do us good,'' Robben told the Sport-Bild weekly.
Ousted Bayern coach Louis van Gaal refused to sign any new players, and the club could finish outside the top three in the Bundesliga and miss out on next season's Champions League.

Jerome Boateng's agent has played down talk linking the Manchester City defender with a move to Bayern Munich.
Reports in Germany have suggested that Bayern are lining up a move to bring the former Hamburg star back to the Bundesliga after one season in England.

The 22-year-old has endured a difficult first season in the Premier League with injuries restricting his lack of first-team opportunities.
Bayern are thought to be in the market for defensive reinforcements and Boateng was thought to be on their wanted list.
However, Boateng's agent, Jorg Neubauer, insists he has received no contact from Bayern for the German international.
"The whole issue is a newspaper theme," Neubauer told Kicker. "I don't have to think about a transfer as long as no one approaches me."
When asked if Boateng would consider a move to Bayern, Neubauer said: "I cannot confirm that."

I was really hoping Bayern would slash out some good money for Hummels, but that just doesn't seem very likely now.

Actually I think Boateng sucks at fullback and when I say that I am talking strictly on our NT squad. He is a much better CB but Jogi wont play him at CB since we have a few choices already... but just no real solid CB yet.

Well, I've only seen him play as a full-back. And he's good. But I'm not so sure how I'd feel about him playing at CB. The problem is there aren't that many "better" options right now, unfortunately.

Boateng would be a solid CB. Hes strong, hes tall and hes actually the fastest guy on our NT (100m) ironically he lacks the immediate speed to play behind the wings. So if we brought him in as a CB I would be happy. He difinitely has the big stage experience. I just hope he wont be brought in as a RB.

No-no, he's not bad. He's not bad at all. He's actually a pretty good footballer. I'm just not so sure if he's the guy that's going to put a defense together for Bayern. I was hoping for someone like Hummels, maybe.

He's still decent, at least better than demichelis or someone.

Rooney form no surprise for Giggs

Published 15:40 28/04/11 By MirrorFootball

Ryan Giggs is not in the least bit surprised at Wayne Rooney's return to form.
Any lingering doubts about whether Rooney was back to his best after a difficult year were surely dispelled by the 25-year-old's performance in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday night.
Not only did Rooney scored the vital second goal in a two-goal triumph that means Manchester United are virtually certain to claim a place in the Champions League final at Wembley on May 28, he delivered a mature performance he has tended to look incapable of in years gone by.
He followed up by admitting he got it wrong - big style - with his much-publicised concerns about Sir Alex Ferguson's current squad, worries which triggered an ill-advised transfer request. Now Rooney appears to be committed to United for the long haul, which is just as well.
As United's elder statesman, Giggs realises it won't be long before he must hand over the responsibility he has carried for so long to others.
And in Rooney, the veteran Welshman knows they have the right man for the big occasion.
"I am not surprised at what Wayne is doing," said Giggs.
"The top players perform when the trophies are about to be handed out. They produce moments of inspiration when it matters.
"Wayne has done that time and time again over the years, so it was hardly a shock he was superb against Schalke."
Now 37, Giggs can hardly have expected when he celebrated his 32nd birthday that before the end of his career he would win four more Premier League titles and have the chance to lift another three European Cups.
Not only that, his influence remains massive.
Although he might have been guilty of wasting a sizeable proportion of the huge number of chances United created in the Veltins-Arena, it was Giggs' calm finish that brought his side the opening goal in a dominant display.
Ferguson has already earmarked him for an important job in the second leg, meaning Giggs will not be risked from the start against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Nevertheless, it promises to be another titanic tussle, with another one to follow against Chelsea on May 8 as United look to wrap up a record 19th league title, of which Giggs would have played a part in 12.
"This is what you want," he said. "The idea is to be playing big game after big game at this stage of the season because it means you are amongst the big trophies and going for the league.
"In that sense, we have got it exactly right. There are no issues. We have the squad to cope.
"I am sure the manager will make changes on Sunday but I also know the players who come in will be in good form.
"Hopefully we can get as good as a result and put on as good a performance as we did against Schalke."
To most fans, Schalke have already been consigned to history, destined to go the same way as Chelsea, Marseille, Valencia and Rangers, who have all been summarily disposed of by United in the Champions League this season.
United losing at home by three goals is not exactly unheard of. Gary Lineker once managed it with Tottenham and Chelsea have managed it too.
However, combining one of those freak results together with a repeat of Schalke's 5-2 demolition of Inter Milan at the San Siro would seem to be an outrageous demand.
Giggs knows United cannot afford to think that way and is promising there will be no slackening at Old Trafford next Wednesday.
"Obviously we are massive favourites," he said.
"We have scored two away goals and we still have to play them at Old Trafford.
"But we have to be wary. Teams have underestimated Schalke before. We won't be doing that."

Pardew already planning for summer recruitment

Published 15:50 28/04/11 By MirrorFootball

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admits he is growing into his job as he gets to know the club, the city and its people.
The 49-year-old arrived at St James' Park in December last year in the wake of Chris Hughton's controversial departure and announced himself in style with a 3-1 home victory over Liverpool, the side the Magpies face on Sunday at Anfield.
During the intervening period, they have eased themselves to the brink of mathematical safety, and Pardew is now planning for a new campaign and the task of transforming the club from top-flight survivors into something more.
Having spent his entire managerial career in the south of England, life on Tyneside had provided him with a new experience, but it is one he is thoroughly enjoying.Pardew got a taste of how things could be earlier this month when his players battled their way to a 0-0 draw with leaders Manchester United in front of a passionate crowd of 49,025, although he insisted his appetite was whetted long before that.
He said: "It was whetted way before then, but the more and more I take games in and get to know the place and understand how it works, the more familiar I am becoming with it and the more natural the surroundings are becoming to me.
"I am obviously very proud to be the Newcastle manager and I enjoy it immensely."
Pardew's time at St James' Park has not been without its challenges, with Andy Carroll's £35million exit for Liverpool in January after weeks of insisting he was going nowhere and an injury list which has robbed him of key players taking their toll.
The manager, who yesterday lost loan signing Stephen Ireland for the rest of the campaign with an ankle injury after the midfielder had managed just two appearances as a substitute, acknowledges his squad needs to be strengthened significantly during the summer, and his scouting team has been clocking up the air miles as they assess prospective targets at home and abroad.
That process, however, cannot get under way in earnest until the club's Premier League status is formally guaranteed, although preparations for a summer recruitment drive are being stepped up with that point close to being reached.
Pardew said: "Of course, it helps that. You can start talking to people and they can look at us and realistically think we are going to be in the Premier League, which helps, obviously."

Deschamps happy Marseille's hopes in its own hands

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps is relieved his team will determine its own destiny after having overtaken Lille at the top of the French league.
Defending champion Marseille moved into first place on Wednesday after a 4-2 home win against Nice, profiting from Lille's unexpected slump that has seen its title rival pick up just two points from three matches.
"We have six matches left. I would rather be ahead than chasing," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. "We no longer have to rush around and hope that others drop points."

Marseille hosts struggling Auxerre at home on Sunday and Lille is at home to last-place Arles-Avignon on Saturday.
Marseille remains on course for a another double, having successfully defended its League Cup title last weekend.
The recent surge in form, coupled with Lille's dip, means Deschamps can further cement his place in Marseille folklore.
He was the captain when Marseille won the Champions League in 1993 - the only French club ever to do so - and coached the club to success in his first season when he took over from Eric Gerets two years ago.
Fans chanted Deschamps' name at the end of Wednesday's match at Stade Velodrome, but the former France midfielder gave only a small wave in response. He has not forgotten how the supporters chanted for his predecessor's return in the final match before the winter break, when Marseille was in fifth place and trailed Lille by six points.
"I prefer to hear that than the 'Gerets, Gerets' chants on December 23rd," Deschamps said.
Deschamps has managed to eke out results when his team has not played well and key players have not performed. He also made the bold decision to leave Argentine playmaker Lucho Gonzalez on the bench against Nice.
While Gonzalez's erratic form has finally forced Deschamps to drop the player he credited with inspiring last season's title run, the coach has invested his trust in Ghana winger Andre Ayew with spectacular results.
The 21-year-old Ayew has hit winning goals away to Toulouse and Nancy, scored in a crucial home win against bitter rival Paris Saint-Germain and grabbed his first career hat trick in Wednesday's win against Nice.
Ayew's performances this season have drawn high praise, with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson saying he was immensely impressed with the player's performance against his team in the Champions League in February.
Deschamps totally overlooked Ayew last season, sending him out on loan to the second division. Only after talks during the offseason with Ayew's father, the former African Player of the Year Abedi Pele, did Deschamps bring him back.
"I wasn't here to experience the title last year," said Ayew, who has scored nine league goals so far. "I want to be a champion with the club that made me."
With Lille out of sorts, third-place Lyon could now emerge as Marseille's toughest challenger.
Claude Puel's Lyon team is five points behind Marseille after beating Montpellier 3-2 on Wednesday, thanks to a last-minute goal from Yoann Gourcuff.
Gourcuff, once tipped as the natural successor to Zinedine Zidane when he broke into the France team three years ago, has been so poor recently that Puel finally dropped him.
Gourcuff responded by coming off the bench to slam home the winner against Montpellier, a goal Lyon fans will hope finally spark a return to the form he showed when leading Bordeaux to the title three seasons ago.
"It was touching to see all the players rushing over to me after I had scored," Gourcuff said. "Obviously (I was) a bit disappointed (to be dropped) but Lyon has a lot of quality players."
Lyon plays at Toulouse on Sunday, but could be without captain Jeremy Toulalan. He hurt his knee against Montpellier.
In Saturday's other matches, it is: Lens vs. Lorient; Rennes vs. Bordeaux; Sochaux vs. Nancy, and PSG vs. Valenciennes.
Also Sunday, it is: Montpellier vs. Brest; Nice vs. Caen, and Saint-Etienne vs. Monaco.
