Kakamega general hospital in Kakamega county the main referral hospital within the region, the site of 6bn Kakamega Teaching and referral hospital to be handed to contractor tomorrow..

It will be the first teaching and referral hospital in the region

The groundbreaking for the Sh6 billion state-of-the-art Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital will be held tomorrow.

The 500-bed hospital is expected to turn around health services delivery in Western. It will become the first teaching and referral hospital in the region.

The hospital will be used by the school of medicine being established by the Masinde Muliro University.

Currently, patients from Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga and Kakamega counties are referred to either Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, or the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu, for specialised treatment.

Last month, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya signed the contracts for construction of the hospital with a Chinese company. Construction will be done in three phases.

County head of communication Sumba Juma yesterday said 46 governors have been invited to the function. Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya was invited.

The first phase will include the outpatient department and general wards, diabetes, cancer and renal units to be completed in 18 months.

A total of Sh1 billion has already been allocated to begin the project, Juma said.

The hospital will be erected on 10 acres next to the county general hospital. The county general hospital, which serves as a referral unit for Western, is being renovated for Sh150 million.

On April 20, Kakamega county health advisory board chairman Stanley Khainga said Masinde Muliro has already set aside 10 acres for the medical school.

The county has given Sh10 million to Masinde Muliro management to construct an anatomical laboratory.

Khainga said the ICU is almost complete. The Slovakian government is sponsoring the ICU unit.

He said the county government will hire an anaesthesiologist to be in charge of the ICU.

Khainga said the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and the Commission for University Education are satisfied the county general hospital meets teaching standards.

He said the first batch of students will be admitted this September in a parallel programme.

The government group will be selected next year, Khainga said.

The board chairman said Kakamega county government is collaborating with Stanford University, the University of California and the Swedish Cancer centre to establish the medical school.

A Chinese firm has partnered with the government to fund housing development in order to bridge the current shortfall of over 200,000 units.

Transport CS James Macharia who is currently in China, held talks with China-Africa Development Fund management.

CADFund is an Africa-focused equity investment fund launched by the Chinese government to support Chinese firms investing in Africa through infrastructure, funding and skilled personnel.

In a statement, CADfund committed to invest in housing projects and provide capital for the same.

The number of units could not be immediately established.

The government is keen to address the housing shortage by partnering with the private sector.

It is also under pressure to provide proper housing to the disciplined forces. There are currently 80,000 proposed housing units for the armed forces.

Another priority area for the government is the endeavour to improve mortgages take-up from the current low levels of 20,000 to at least 100,000.

The government has also sought CADfund’s support in the proposed Ngara city project. CADfund has been working with Kenyan housing developer Suraya to develop housing projects in the country.

These include the proposed development of over 10,000 affordable housing units available to both civil servants and the general public.

The partnership between CADfund, Suraya and Chinese contractor China Construction Engineering Consultant Corporation, is also expected to result in 20,000 new houses for the police force, which is currently under-served.

Macharia also met 25 Kenyan students studying at the Beijing Jiantong University.
