A Russian win in Ukraine would be 'dangerous for the whole world', says NATO chief as he accuses Putin of an escalating war
A win for Russia in Ukraine would be "dangerous for the whole world" and the West can't let that happen, the general secretary of NATO has said.
Speaking at a joint news conference, Jens Stoltenberg said if Moscow was to take Ukraine, it would show that "aggression works and force is rewarded".
"It would be dangerous for our own security and for the whole world, so we must sustain and step up our support for Ukraine," he added.
He debunked the claim Mr Putin made in his address earlier today that Russia did not start the war, by saying the country is the "aggressor" and isn't being attacked by anybody.
Mr Stoltenberg added that Ukraine is the "victim of Russian aggression" and the West is supporting its "self-defence".
"It is President Putin who started this imperial war of conquest and it is Putin who keeps escalating the war," he said.
"He thought he could destroy Ukraine and divide us, but he underestimated the determination of Ukrainian people to defend their homeland and our unity."
He continued to say NATO sees no signs Mr Putin is preparing for peace - in fact, the leader has made it clear he is "preparing for more war" by reaching out to North Korea and Iran for help.
Mr Stoltenberg also urged Russia to reconsider its decision to suspend a nuclear treaty with the US and reiterated his concerns that China is planning to support the country with "lethal weapons".
