Bed Bugs:

Bedbugs are parasites that live and breed inside your mattress, and they are resistant to pesticides. HealthGuard™ Bed Bug mattress encasements are one form of impenetrable protection from these pests.

Health Effects

A number of health effects may occur due to bedbugs including skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms. Bedbug bites or cimicosis may lead to a range of skin manifestations from no visible effects to prominent blisters. Diagnosis involves both finding bedbugs and the occurrence of compatible symptoms. Treatment involves the elimination of the insect but is otherwise symptomatic.

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime.

Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year

Effects of Bed Bugs

Although bed bugs carry pathogens such as plague and hepatitis B, no evidence exists suggesting they transfer such diseases to people.

Though health concerns are unlikely with bed bugs, they do cause infestations that are irritating to homeowners.

Although they are a nuisance, they do not transmit diseases.
