According to a statement by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Mukhtar's decision was courageous and called other fighters in the terror group to surrender to authorities before they are wipe out.
AMISOM through Twitter account welcomed the surrender by Al-Shabaab leader, Hussein Salad Mukhtar to the Somali National Army.
AMISOM also called on Al-Shabaab fighters to heed the Government’s amnesty, lay down their weapons and join other Somalis in rebuilding their country.
The extremist group in Somalia wants to topple the western backed government and impose its own strict version of Islamic Sharia Law.
The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab has ruled most of south-central Somalia for years until in 2011 when the extremist group was driven out of Mogadishu by African Union troops.
Despite the loss of territory, the terror group still carries out major gun and bomb attacks against nations that have contributed troops to AMISOM.
