I think what Zanzibar meant to say is, had that border line dividing Kenya and Tanzania continued on straight from the Mara/ Mwanza ends without the slight curve just after Mt Kili, then Mombasa would have been on the TZ side.
There is a story that went around in the past that Kenyatta once claimed Mt Kili rightly belonged to Kenya so Nyerere hit back with "Mombasa rightly belongs to Tanganyika".
That would have left Kenya without a port (unless of course Raila had been president and pulled off his promise of "building a new port at Lamu, and a railway line all the way to Somalia"!!!)
