Dar-Reunion Island direct flights on cards

May 05
13:512014

Arrangements are underway to have direct flights linking the French La Reunion Island to Tanzania, it was revealed here over the weekend.

The Mayor of the Bras- Panon Commune of the Reunion Islet, Mr Daniel Gonthier, stated that there are ongoing talks between the French Island and Tanzanian officials over the matter, with the two parties mulling cooperation on travel industry, tourism and agriculture.

“The Tanzanian Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, visited our Island recently and the issue of establishing direct flights between Bras-Panone and Kilimanjaro, as well as Dares-Salaam became of paramount importance,” said Mr Gonthier who is also the President for the Islands National Parks.

There are no direct flights to La Reunion from Tanzania, with travellers forced to transit through Madagascar, Mauritius or Dubai, taking days for the journey that could take hardly 12 hours with direct flight.
There are at least 200,000 visitors that the French Island will be able to share with Tanzania once there are direct flights between the two countries.

The Bras-Panon Island officials have on the other hand signed a pact with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), for the French Island to assist the Maasai living within the NCAA to modernize Dar-Reunion Island direct flights on cards honey production.

“A delegation of NCAA officials led by the (then) Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu visited the Reunion Island late last year to seal the cooperation,” said NCAA Public Relations Manager, Mr Adam Akyoo.

Last week, a delegation from Bras-Panon was in Ngorongoro to start the process of building a special honey extracting centre, complete with quality grading laboratory that will ensure the local honey meets ISO (International Standards Organization) product and packaging quality customary, after which Reunion will also assist Ngorongoro to break into European Honey markets.

It follows last year’s 2012 major breakthrough for the beekeeping communities of Ngorongoro Division, who received official delegation from La Reunion which was led by Mr Daniel Gonthier, the Mayor of Bras-Panon Commune in Reunion.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the honey- producing Islands with the mostly cattle-keeping residents of Ngorongoro was reached then and it made the two parties ready to start the mutual honey making project.

Already, an expert from Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority Mr David Ole Kaisoy has undergone a month-long training in Reunion on effective and modern methods of beekeeping and honey production.

“It will take some work to establish new types of beehives as used in the Reunion but once we have done it, the lives of most people in the Ngorongoro Division will be transformed for the better,” Mr Kaisoy had previously stated.

The Reunion Mayor’s visit to Ngorongoro, last year, was accompanied by Mr Patrick Hoareau, the Director of Cooperatives and Agriculture in the Reunion, Mr Jonny Ajorque, the beekeeping expert from the Island and another official, Ms Monique Mourounguinpoulle.

The cattle keepers told their visitor that they had been active in beekeeping but mainly on traditional scale, but after learning of the trade’s potential they now intend to run their honey producing activities commercially.

“Our Island is a major producer and exporter of honey into the European Union, we plan to assist Ngorongoro farmers to process their honey properly, package it well and find the products’ market in Europe,” said Mr Gonthier.

Reunion will assist Ngorongoro producers in establishing special cooperative societies specializing in beekeeping, build honey processing plants, come up with a special product branding and international packaging standards ready for export.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area famed for its legendary crater and wildlife has 1,270 beehives, each with the capacity of yielding 7 kilogrammes of honey per season.
The Ngorongoro Division with 17 villages and seven wards has a total of 80 beekeeping groups, 48 of which are located within the NCAA and 32 others outside the conservation area.

Honey has always been used in traditional ceremonies, local rum brewing, medicine making and for dowry payment.
The NCAA, management is on view that under the planned joint project with Reunion, in five years Ngorongoro will be the leading export honey producer in Tanzania.

Produced in conserved area, the honey here is pure, free from chemicals and derived from exclusive natural plants making its taste to stand out.
Reunion, according to Mayor Gonthier, will also train several beekeeping experts from Ngorongoro, in addition to sending down other supervisors to assist in the local area’s initiative to become the leading honey producer in Africa.

Turkish Airlines now plans additional route to Zanzibar

Mohammed Ugasa
After enjoying hassle-free business operations between Istanbul-Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro routes, Turkish Airlines’ management is looking forward to open an additional route to Zanzibar in the near future.

The airline’s vice-president for marketing and sales, Mevlu Kayar, confirming this in Istanbul last week said business has been booming. In his views therefore an additional flight to Zanzibar was necessary to meet the huge demand by passengers.

Obviously conscious of other international airlines currently in operation of the Zanzibar route from Europe, Kayar has been confident that the East Africa’s precious Island destination will be successful in terms of passenger flights.

The Turkish Airlines’ official declined to mention the exact time when the new route to Zanzibar will be opened but insisted that there is no doubt over its introduction.

The airline started its operations in Tanzania in 2010 when the only route by then was Istanbul-Dar es Salaam before introducing the Kilimanjaro-Istanbul in December last year.

Turkish Airlines flies ten times a week with Istanbul-Dar frequencies hitting six times and the balance for the Kilimanjaro route.

Abdulkadir Atay, the airline’s regional commercial manager to Tanzania based in Arusha said business trend has been working right in favour of the airline to the extent that there is a need to increase Istanbul-Dar flights to seven.

Atay confirmed that flight frequencies from Dar es Salaam to Istanbul will be increased to seven with effect from July to cope with passenger traffic intensity between the two destinations.

He said the passenger intensity between Dar es Salaam and Istanbul has been on a growing trend and that his airline does not actually see the need to introduce measures in curbing seasonality.

“Look here, we are in the middle of the low season but have a look at our flights, they are full and bookings are ‘overflowing,” said Atay.
However, the Turkish airlines flights are always full not because most of Tanzanians fly to Istanbul as their sole destination.

But because over 85 percent of the passengers in the Dar-Istanbul route are those in transit towards other destination across Europe, Asia, Far East, North and South America and elsewhere, he said.

Currently Turkish Airlines is using two-class configuration Boeing 737-900 for the Dar es Salaam–Istanbul route with the passenger capacity of 170 and 16 of those in the business class.

The seven-hour one-take-off one-landing flights always leave the Julius Nyerere International Airport at 3am and lands at Istanbul before noon to ease connection to most of its passengers flying outside Turkey.

Reacting on complaints over the flight timings for those passengers flying from Dar es Salaam and KIA, Atay said there is no option for the moment as it is the best for the bulk of them who use Istanbul as their connection base to their desired destinations.

Return flights from Istanbul to Dar es Salaam are highly convenient as Turkish Airlines take off at 1900 hours and the only discomfort is in Dar es Salaam as flight lands early in the morning.

seriously? Star alliance beaten by a Skyteam? FYI Turkish airline has been named the best airline in Europe for the third time consecutively beating KLM, BA and all other airlines in Europe including Lufthansa
