Activist Moses Kuria was Thursday charged with hate speech in a Nairobi court.

He appeared in the Nairobi Chief Magistrate's court, denied the charges and was released on a Sh2 million cash bail and a Sh5 million bond.

Mr Kuria is charged with incitement, hate speech and causing ethnic contempt in Facebook messages allegedly posted on May 16.

He had been summoned to appear before the court on the recommendation of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission after complaints by Law Society of Kenya.

LSK had said the Facebook posts were intended to incite the public to violence against a specific community.

On Tuesday, the political activist won the The National Alliance (TNA) party's nomination to contest in the Gatundu South parliamentary by-election set for August 7.

The seat fell vacant following the death of MP Joseph Ngugi Nyumu.

As usual nothing comes out of this. The charges are real, but the man will walk.

A nice try though. It is heartening to see this happening. Politicians will now be a bit more careful on what they say or write.

I'd rather not comment on that commission, but evidently it has not restricted any politician running to and fro kenya with hate campaigns. polticians are doing what they will. if they are getting their pay from tax-payers kitty, it needs to be reconstituted. to be effective and non partisan

Meanwhile TNA has upheld this guys nomination despite the misgivings that happened during the exercise
leading to the wife of the former MP to file a petition.

Lawmaina78, is holding his own especially against Geza Ulole and company. I watch their tiffs everyday and I must say Jamvi limekua murwaa!...lol

This individual is Kenyatta's mouth piece! A tribal point man that should be wallowing in jail. lawmaina78 will come to his defense.

This is what TNA, Kenyatta's personal party, is gifting the people.

I've never liked this Kuria guy especially for his outright tribal hate, but Uhuru has no time to restrain every politician in his camp. There are constitutional institutions in place to do that. Just like Raila's rallies, we are used to seeing every speaker spewing out hate and finally have him take stage to bless it all with his vitendawili (riddles).

In Kenya, we either be seen to fight negative ethnicity together or perish as a whole. Pointing fingers while our mouths are full of worms is hypocrisy of the highest order. It can take me few minutes to bring up screenshots of similar hate speech from your camp just like you've done above.
