Parliament has on Wednesday approved nomination of Hilary Mutyambai as Inspector-General of Police.

Mr Mutyambai, who until his appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta was the deputy director of counter-terrorism at the National Intelligence Service, replaces Joseph Boinnet whose term ended in March.

Mr Mutyambai coordinated security forces in the rescue operation following the Dusit D2 complex terrorist attack.

He joined the Kenya Police Service in 1998 as a corporal and rose through the ranks at the NIS.

His predecessor retired after serving a four-year non-renewable term but was immediately appointed a Chief Administrative Secretary in the charge of environment and natural resources in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.

During his vetting in Parliament, Mr Mutyambai promised to change the tainted image of the service to ensure that professionalism, rule of law and respect for human rights prevail in th police force.

He was vetted by the joint committees on Administration and National Security of the National Assembly and that of the Defence and Foreign Relations of the Senate.
