Mt. Elgon - Two MPs allied to the Jubilee coalition have advised Cord leader Raila Odinga to quit active politics, claiming he has failed to marshal his team to provide effective opposition to the ruling government.
The two legislators, John Serut (Mt Elgon) and Samuel Moroto (Kapenguria) said the former Prime Minister has made significant contribution in the Kenya political scene, but it is time he retired from politics to give young leaders a chance.
Speaking in Kimobo Primary School in Mt. Elgon, the two lawmakers cited the recent Saba Saba rally which they claimed was a big flop, and the clamor by Cord for the disbandment of the Independent electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), among other demands, as examples of how the coalition has failed.
Cord is now fighting for the disbandment of IEBC, which its leadership previously heaped praise on. They are going against the spirit of the very constitution they zealously fought for. This is testament of the failure in the parts of the official leaders of the coalition, said Serut.
He said Raila should give up his political ambitions including running for presidency, noting that his fifth stab at the same seat will be unsuccessful and he will only end up embarrassing himself.
After vying for presidency unsuccessfully for a record four times, it is just good to read the signs of the times and just quit. The government even has a hefty retirement package for him, said Serut.
Announcing that he has retired from politics will be a honourable thing for my brother Raila Odinga to do, since he will earn the tag of statesman just like the late Nelson Mandela, than if he runs for the presidency again and fails, added the Mt Elgon MP.
Moroto echoed Seruts sentiments and said the former Prime Minister should exit the stage and let other young leaders who he has mentored take over his party and opposition coalition.
In politics, people run out of steam. It is needless to keep trying and failing every time. Maybe there is something he is not doing right, and he should also let new people with new ideas to try, said Moroto.
