Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) spokesman Rashid Mraja is set to be be arraigned in a Mombasa court this morning to face murder charges over the recent MRC activities in which four villagers in Mwaluvamba were hacked to death and their homes razed by persons believed to be the military wing of the MRC.
Mraja is likely to face additional murder charges after people believed to be members of the outlawed group killed 18 people including nine police officers in Kilifi on March 3, the eve of the general elections.
Mraja was last night arrested at the porous Lunga Lunga border as he attempted to sneak into Kenya from Tanzania where he and other MRC leaders were believed to be in hiding. The MRC spokesman however said that he had been to Tanzania to visit his sister.
Mraja's arrest resulted from a crackdown ordered by Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo to stop the group from distabilising the coastal region and to restore peace in the area. Others also being targeted are the group's chairman Mwamnwadzi who is also believed to be in Tanzania.
