Entrepreneurship Skills Seminar Coming
OCEAN Professional Development Series has organised a two-day business summit in Dar es Salaam mid next month to equip the local entrepreneurs with business skills.
The organisation's leader and consultant, Mr Charles Porter told reporters in the city on Wednesday that though Tanzania was endowed with highly creative and brilliant people, majority entrepreneurs were failing due to lack of the basic entrepreneurship skills.
"Tanzanians have great ideas for business but what they lack are skills to translate those ideas into sustainable income generating ventures," Mr Porter said, hinting that the business summit scheduled for March 18-19, 2011 will address the key issues of entrepreneurship-management of customer relation, cash flows and employee relations.
He cited extended families and business incompetency as the critical impediments of small business growth by majority Tanzanians.
"Small business is difficult to operate in Tanzania because of many desperate people depending on few relatively successful members of the family...people have to make distinction between business and family issues," he said.
Mr Porter challenged Tanzanians to get rid of donor dependence mentality and instead work hard and adhere to business discipline to move forward economically, "Business successes never come overnight but some people want to start small businesses today and graduate into multinationals into two years."
The organisation's Marketing Consultant, Mr Ikechukwu Kalu, played down the issue of capital as the main constraint that small entrepreneurs encounter, "I'm not ignoring
the role of capital in business but surely 90 per cent of the factors that contribute to business success has nothing to do with money."
He argued that potential entrepreneurs with feasible business ideas and business discipline could start small, with what they have and grow gradually to whatever level they so wish.
