A man masquerading as a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officer was on Saturday, May 9, arrested in Isibania, Migori County for smuggling Tanzanians into the country.
This coming at a time when Kenya was recording a number of imported Covid-19 cases through its porous borders especially from Tanzania and Somalia.
Authorities in Migori County exposed a syndicate helping Tanzanians sneak into with the arrest of the KRA impostor identifying some of the methods used to smuggle foreigners.
One of four mechanics who had crossed into Kenya illegally was arrested in the crackdown and placed under quarantine while the other three managed to escape.
As of Saturday, May 9, Migori County had recorded seven Coronavirus cases with all of those being imported from Tanzania.
Migori Governor Okoth Obado, speaking to Citizen TV asked the government to set up a Covid-19 testing point in the county.
"We have intensified border patrol to ensure illegal persons are arrested, we are now calling on the National Government to set up a Covid-19 testing facility at the Isibania border to ease the process at the border," said Obado.
Ministry of Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman noted that the ministry was on high alert over the rising numbers of imported Covid-19 cases.
"It does concern us that we are beginning to see the numbers within some of these border counties of ours like Migori and Kajiado slowly rising and in it is a matter of concern.
"We need to be able to strengthen and control those coming in, if they are truckers, then we need to be able to test them.
"Tanzania is a neighbouring country and we are all members of the East African Community (EAC) and through that forum of the EAC we are constantly in communication.
"We have virtual conferences with Health Ministers on a regular basis to address issues of Covid-19 and issues at the border point," stated Aman.
On Saturday, May 9, alone Migori had recorded four Covid-19 cases, all imported from Tanzania.
