A reporter from NBS television on Monday evening found himself caught up in a hot exchange with the country’s president, Museveni.
Joseph Sabiti who describes himself as a “journalist and patriot” rose to ask a question while Museveni addressed press after launching the anti-corruption unit at Kololo independence grounds.
“Mr President…” Sabiti was preparing to launch his question only to be interrupted by the president.
Museveni: NBS is a bad television. Bad, bad, bad, bad, ba—aad!
Sabiti: [half-smile] but it is loyal to Ugandans, Your Excellency!
Museveni: No, no. I know whom it is loyal to.
Sabiti: [dry laugh] uumm, my name is Joseph Sabiti…
Museveni: And they must change because that game also is finished. The game of thinking that Ugandans [we] shall work hard and then you parasites will go on misrepresenting our work.
Sabiti keeps nodding as the president lashes out.
Museveni: You don’t have that right. You have the right to report the truth. Okay? Better watch out.
While delivering his speech at Kololo independence grounds, Museveni urged the media and the general public to join him in the campaign to eradicate corruption.
“Please expose and report corrupt public servants,” he implored.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit will be led by Lt Col Edith Nakalema.
“Lt Col Nakalema is my watching post on this. She will keep me posted and pursue cases of corruption with the other agencies,” Museveni noted.
He added: “Also, we have about Shs54 billion uncollected from corrupt officials even when court has ordered so. I am directing that this money is recovered immediately.”
