The programme, which is to be run in collaboration with the Confucious Institute of China, has also been launched at the University of Dodoma and in the University of Dar es Salaam. The launching ceremony took place at the MUM campus in morogoro over the weekend, making it the first private university to enroll the programme. The MUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Hamza Njozi, said that the universitys decision to introduce the Chinese language subject has been prompted by the current global development. China has made great strides in economic and technological development. It is important for us in the developing countries to teach our university students the language so that they can easily access various knowledge and professional skills in china, he said. He added that the university had plans to launch Chinese and Portuguese language courses since 2008 but due to some technical problems the university resolved to start with Arabic and French. Prof Njozi noted that developed countries such as UK and US have many students in China studying Chinese as a part of strategic plan to have in place skilled personnel who will help connect their countries with China which is emerging super power.
He hailed China for its inspiring programme which has been giving over 30,000 scholarships for students from around the global to study Chinese language in China, adding that some of the graduates from MUM have benefited. The programmes coordinator, Mr Faraj Tamim, said the university welcomes businessmen to join the training. Mr Tamim, who is also a registration officer at the university, said that the university will have a special arrangement for businessmen to benefit from such training as a way of helping them improve in communication with Chinese counterparts. The Representative of the Confucious Institute, Ms Tong Jun, said Chinese teachers stationed at MUM will be available to conduct programmes at other universities in Morogoro. The Morogoro District Commissioner, Mr Said Amanzi, who graced the event on behalf of the Regional Commissioner, Mr Joel Bendera, noted that knowing Chinese would be an added value for graduates. He said that China has been a longtime partner of Tanzania in all spheres of development, adding that the major strides that have been made by the former in science and technology were also remarkable and a reason to cement ties through learning their language.
