Malawian President Peter Mutharika
Malawian President Peter Mutharika has maintained that his country owns the entire northern part of Lake Nyasa and no negotiation will change that.
Tanzania maintains that half of the northern part of the lake lies on its territory, an assertion that Malawi vehemently disputes.
According to Malawian daily newspaper, Nyasa Times, President Mutharika insisted that Tanzania owns not even an inch of the Lake on Wednesday when attending to former president of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano and former president of Botswana Festus Mogae, who are members of Forum of Former African Heads of State and Government mediating the Lake border dispute between the two countries.
The two former presidents briefed Mr Mutharika on the progress of the mediation.
"I informed the two leaders that to us there is no conflict between Malawi and Tanzania. I have stated that the issue about Lake Malawi is not negotiable and my position has not changed," the paper quoted Mr Mutharika as saying.
He however pointed out that the position didn't mean that Malawi is spoiling to go to war with Tanzania.
President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania also dismissed the war option in July this year when he visited the newly formed Nyasa District in Ruvuma Region saying he is confident that an amicable solution will be achieved at the negotiation table.
"I want to tell you there's no point in going to war…enjoy fishing in Lake Nyasa as Tanzania won't be going to war anytime soon," he told the residents of Mbamba Bay.
The paper also reported that Mr Mutharika assured the former leaders of his personal and government's commitment to return to the discussion table "with our neighbours for an amicable and peaceful resolution."
