In Summary

  • Minutes of the committee meeting held on July 9 this year indicate that the budget for former president Kibaki's bronze statue was raised from Sh15 million to Sh50 million.
  • Briefing members of the private sector on preparations for the event at a breakfast meeting on Thursday, Mr Iringo declared that the government was determined to ensure that the event eclipsed President Kenyatta's inauguration ceremony on April 9 this year.
  • The meeting further allocated Sh20 million for the acquisition of 20 billboard size portraits of the country's founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, former presidents Daniel arap Moi and Kibaki and current President Uhuru Kenyatta. This followed a proposal by the presidential master of ceremonies and the committee secretary, Mr Sammy Lui.

The government could spend a staggering Sh2.5 billion on celebrations to mark 50 years of Kenya's independence if a budget drafted by technocrats is approved by the Cabinet.

Budgetary proposals from the Kenya@50 organising committee reveal lavish spending on activities and projects such as billboards, statues and entertainment as the country marks its golden jubilee in the second week of December this year.

The huge budget includes Sh690 million for events management and logistics, Sh286 million for conference and exhibition during the one week celebration, Sh300 million for publicity and communication, Sh365 million for entertainment and a handsome Sh320 million to go towards identifying Kenya's most prominent personalities.

It also includes Sh50 million for erecting a bronze statue of retired President Mwai Kibaki hoisting aloft a copy of the Constitution during its promulgation on August 27, 2010.

In an interview with the Sunday Nation, Interior Coordination and National Government Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo, who chairs the national organising committee, maintained that the Sh2.5 billion budget was yet to be approved by the government but added that the private sector would be brought on board to fund part of it.

"The budget has not been finalised yet, but I expected it Thursday July 25. The plan is that the government should not fund it alone. We want the private sector and other stakeholders to take part.

This is everybody's business, and we want all to take part. However, I've instructed the committee that I don't want to see a budget that is too large," said Mr Iringo.

The figures are likely to infuriate Kenyans coming in the wake of a month-long countrywide teachers' strike that paralysed learning in public schools and a ballooning public wage bill that is consuming over half of the country's budget.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) chairman Wilson Sossion criticised the huge expenditure coming at a time when the government says it has no money to improve salaries in the public sector.

"It is immoral to say the least. Sh2.5 billion is enough to educate all the needy children in the country. There is nothing to celebrate. Kenya at 50 is more of an ideological reflection of the post-independent Kenya than an extravagant spending by the country's elite. The burden of funding the so-called celebrations will in one way or another be passed over to the taxpayer," said Mr Sossion.

Briefing members of the private sector on preparations for the event at a breakfast meeting on Thursday, Mr Iringo declared that the government was determined to ensure that the event eclipsed President Kenyatta's inauguration ceremony on April 9 this year.

"This event will perhaps even be bigger than the President's inauguration ceremony and that is why we want to involve as many people as possible and ensure it is a success," Mr Iringo said.

"The government, in appreciation of the significance and magnitude of the 50th anniversary of independence celebrations, constituted the Ministerial 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations Preparatory Committee in May 2012," the PS said.

"This committee comprised officers drawn from the then ministry of Provincial Administration and Internal Security. It held several meetings, and recommended the form and content of the celebrations in a report submitted in September 2012," he added.

He stated that the activities were slowed between September last year and April this year because of the political campaigns leading to the March General Election.

Minutes of the committee meeting held on July 9 this year indicate that the budget for former president Kibaki's bronze statue was raised from Sh15 million to Sh50 million.

"It was agreed by the members that the Sh15 million budget for a special monumental bronze statue of H.E. Mwai Kibaki raising aloft a copy of the Constitution should be enhanced to Sh50 million. Members felt that this was necessary so as to have a monument that was of the right scale," the minutes read.

Sh2.5bn budget for Kenya

If it is mr Sossion who said this,,,especially that figure of 2.5 B,,,that it was enough to educate
all children of Kenya,,i wonder what kind of a teacher he may be,,,he cannot be able to
to simple mathematics.

Teachers wanted something like 47 B,,for allowances and other things and here children
needs only 2.5 B,,,,aiseee,,kwani iko nini.

Eti,,,,, there is nothing to celebrate,,,in Kenya,,,,that's him and he cannot speak on behalf of
everybody,,else,,, in Kenya.

Na kama uko na shida,,,usifikiri ni kila mtu,,hebu beba msalaba wako,,peke yako.

10 yrs ago,,,,i paid so much for internet,,but today,, i will use only 15 kshs for
the whole day,,for internet connection or 900 for a moths without interruption.

It is Kibaki's government which billions of kshs to bring that fiber cable,,all the
way from Arabia.

Why couldn't he use those billions to erect gold statues,,then.

Even masikini celebrates Christmas,,put and saves so much
to be spent on that useless occasion and here,,,you here
somebody complaing

What's the number of children in schools, that in primary
and secondary ,,,,,,,, in Kenya

Kenya spends over 300 Billion,,,on education.

Eti,,,,, there is nothing to celebrate,,,in Kenya,,,, ohhhh,,,that's him and he cannot
speak on behalf of everybody,,else,,,here.

You needed about 10,000 kshs for the same,,then say that there is nothing
to celebrate.

It is Kibaki's government which spent,, billions of kshs to bring that under
sees fiber cable,,all the way from Arabia,,.

Why couldn't he use those billions to erect gold statues,,then or build
offices,,,for his own.

Raila built a one billion worth of an office,,when he was a PM.
But nobody said anything.

Even masikinis celebrates Christmas,,put and saves so much
to be spent on that useless occasion and here,,,you hear
somebody saying,, that there is nothing to celebrate.

I can say so much of Kibaki,,,look at our roads,,ICT that's,,,,,,
cost and availability of computers,,,,, spare parts,,compare
Kenya and those around us,,,,nothing to celebrate????

I can forgive some people,,for they do not have eyes to
see good things,,,theirs,,,only,,,,,,,,, for,,,, bad things.

Let mr Sossion carry his own cross and pays teachers
the June salaries,,,for his is the one who mislead,,them.

We erected Kimathi's statue and others,,,, why not Kibaki's
or what is the,,,measurement???

Though very true that there are other priorities in this
country other than erecting statues,,,,,but it does
not mean that everything in Kenya stops until Kenya's
Teachers are paid travel allowances and hardship
whatever.

This is not Obama's money,,,let Kenya celebrate the
good things we have,,like the New constitution and
the end of Al-Shabaabs in Somalia.

Kibaki is a freakin loser and the problems that Kenya faces today squarely fall on his feet.

A relic of a dinosour that needs to be relegated to the archives of irrelevancy. This is a man who cant even put his pants on right and they fall all over the place embarassing him and his family!

You might wanna respect his age man.Its ill health and age that is Kibakis problem ever since the accident. You shall also deserve respect in future once your health begins to fail, not abuses

Wachana na blogs na media stations zinavyosema they can say anything.Ushawahi kumsikia Uhuru akimtusi Raila?
Ila Raila anatusiana kila aendapo.Uhuru is way above that.
Mambo na wakikuyu this wakikuyu that ni upuzi.Maanake mie sio mkikuyu wala mkalenjin lakini siasa za Raila naziona uchafu mtupu.Tena wakikuyu peke yao hata na wakalenjin hawawezi pata kura tosha kushinda urais.Makabila mengine pia yalimpigia uhuru kura as evident in North Eastern.
If anyone is drunk with power ni Raila.Thats why he happily makes everyone see a kikuyu frontrunner candidate as a Kikuyu (not kenyan )believing kikuyu dont deserve his power now.Akishindwa inakuwa ni wizi.
The only time Raila was rigged out was 07.But evidently he carries on that grudge even after power sharing.

And lastly as an observant person of global politics i can tell you nothing is as hard for a politician as trying to change the status quo by being combative. It never works anywhere.Look at Egypt.Obama's is the best example of how to deal with status quo.Approach everyone equally. You never heard Obama calling whites racists/power hungry.I can tell you as a matter of fact he would have lost the 08 polls had he gone that route.Because normally the majority who make up the status quo tend to back one of their own when they kind of read an ulterior motive.

So basically Raila should never dream of undoing kikuyu monopoly combatively. It never works and you can take that to the central bank of Tanzania

You might wanna respect his age man.Its ill health and age that is Kibakis problem ever since the accident. You shall also deserve respect in future once your health begins to fail, not abuses

Respect is a two way street sir! If the man cant respect himself and the people, how do you expect us to do likewise? I see a situation where you are trying to shift blame elsewhere. If he is sick then why cling to power? Why steal the '07 election from Raila?...or you are going to postulate that it's his handlers that were pushing him?

This relic needs to be confined to the annals of history. Period!

If anyone is drunk with power ni Raila.Thats why he happily makes everyone see a kikuyu frontrunner candidate as a Kikuyu (not kenyan )believing kikuyu dont deserve his power now.

The only time Raila was rigged out was 07....

STOP PRESS!

This is the snake oil that your kind try to sale to people here and we are not buying. The tribalism of the Kikuyu nation has nothing to do with Raila please. Give us a break!

All these tribalistic appointments that are being done by the Jubilee regime is their own undoing. Its done right in our faces with the 'mta-do nini' attitude. When people point out this foolishness we are told Raila is inciting people against the Kikuyus. That's a moronic kinda reasoning and points to denial. The Jubilee Govt is going about doing business the wrong way and it has nothing to do with Raila. Kikuyu's and their archaic leaders are there worst own enemies. They don't even need Raila to pin them. They are cooking in their own oil!

Meanwhile thank you for pointing out that Raila was rigged out in '07. Kudos.

Now accept the fact that Uhuruto did not win by 51% in the 1st round like the IEBC want us to believe. Those numbers were cooked and the IEBC chairman said it himself when he refused to take the oath while presenting the voting figures to the Parliamentary committee...remember he said he cannot lie during the Holy month of Ramadhan!...I love this!

These are the problems facing Kenya while Jubilee is obsessed with silencing Raila;

1. Civil servants have not been paid their July Salaries.
2. The army has been shortchanged on their pay by 10,000/-
3. University lecturers are threatening to strike next week.
4. Teachers are threatening to strike again if they don't get their July pay.
5. Doctors and nurses are also threatening to strike.

....amidst all this we are supposed to believe Raila is somehow inciting Kenyans to revolt!

oh by the way, they are trying to build Kibaki a statue worth millions and Ruto's trip is still questionable with crucial information missing in the accounting dept...amidst all this!

This is truly a digital govt...bwahahahaha!!!
