Let me be the devil’s advocate here and provoke even a bigger debate hapa and elsewhere !
There are couple of things that we need to look at this MwijakuGate.
1. We are troubled with his unorthodox approach simply because we were hopping to see a more organized and formal way to market Tanzania as a touristic destination. We are reacting to our previous experience of Mwijakuism and thus our negative reaction.
2. Some of Diaspora who live in diaspora are somehow perplexed with how these video shows him encroaching personal privacy/te space of majority of whomever he interacts with who a females… and we know it’s culturally a no no especially US (Me Too Movement).
3. Mwijaku style has provoked and left a bad taste to many for a long time: bashing Waalimu, being a loud mouthed mouthpiece ya controversial Bandari DPW saga and many other antics of Chawarism all over. Simply to some he is annoying. Fact that it’s being alleged he is being “utilized” by Serikali and its officials as a disruptive figure spinning wananchi from probing, inquiring sensitive national issues… it speaks volumes of level of mistrust wananchi have to a Serikali which for the past 7-10 years it has been shrouded with allegations for creating fake and click bait news and event to steer and stir people from being objective to dissect important matters of the land. And Mwikajaku isn’t the only one who is strategically being used as mouthpiece to redirect wananchi - classic example is how the DPW saga swirled into airwaves of wanaounga na wanaopinga mkataba wa Bandari.
4. Controversy baada ya watu kuhoji Mwijaku’s videos and question Serikali, then TTB circulating a memo disowning the ambassadorial mission ya Mwijaku. Then Mwijaku plays and airs a video thanking PS wa Utalii Dr. Abbasi, plus other private sector tour operator Asha Tours ya Ujerumani and a shipping magnet wa Silent Ocean. He references Royal Tour which makes this whole thing sound’s official. And lo and behold picture zooming experts are now circulation picture with Mwijaku at this expo in Europe with a badge saying TTB official.
5. As it appears Mwijaku is already back in the country and has had an interview with a local TV station, questions arises the timeliness of all this MwijakuGate in midst of people inquiring the massive number of cabinet members (between 7-9) plus other officials who travelled with Madam President on her official visit to India… raising many questions of our budgetary ability to have these many government officials who are paid allowances in addition to travel expenses.
So keep aside the 5 things I have listed and many more that I would list such as Sophia Mjema statement… this is what I have to say about Mwijaku.
1. He has an interesting personality and he uses unorthodox methods which don’t fit the template of Tanzania’s “pseudo-Orthodox” standards. He makes his bread (money) for creating this controversial personality and the fact I am writing this to analyze MwijakuGate it’s a testimony that his peculiarity is so unique to warrant a nation dialogue especially in the so called “elite” circles.
2. Our silos, horse blinders and tunnel visions, have already boxed what and how we should market Tanzania, that it should be formal, more organized, structured and I even brought up Devotha Mdachi jana in these conversations because I was reacting and didn’t think it through to respond. Some of us have spent hours to tailor what should be Utalii policy and some we have shared with Dr. Abbasi na mawaziri our thoughts of what, how, which, when, who and why we should do it how we see it fit instead of embracing diversity ideas as we create a pool of ideas on taking Tanzania to a next level.
3. The clumsy and silliness which somehow makes us feel embarrassed and ashamed is just our knee jerk reaction due to our one dimensional thinking( yes Sisi tunakumbatia sana mtizamo wa namna moja, hence our Achilles heel’s) na zaidi we have decided kuwa the intended audience ya Mwijaku badala ya kujiuliza how do these foreigners respond to clumsy marketing strategies kama what we are so disgusted with. Pale London kwenye tube, kuna kijana wa Ghana who always would sit and set a table next to a strange beautiful lady (am being gentleman here[emoji56]) and will offer food… fufu, matembele, sandwich, wine and a rose… being a charming guy. It sells his brand of chivalry. We all liked and enjoy how stupid, silly and clumsy Mr. Bean was… and how surprised to find out he is an engineer who hit his masters of Science from one of Oxford’s University college system. Mwijaku is our Charlie Chaplin, Mr. Bean, Ali G aka Borat and any other annoying character you could think. He irks our nerves, gets us mad, we see him as Chawa, a buffoon, clown and all sorts of ways we could look down on him as un-intellectual and a disruptive figure.
Let me end by saying this: MwijakuGate has given us shock and also insight of our thinking and perhaps for those who think outside the box, an opportunity to start thinking differently.
Kudos to Dr. Abbasi and others who used Mwijaku unintentionally causing rapture, anxiety, reaction and now this response.
