Dar es Salaam. Former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa's wife, Regina, yesterday spoke publicly about the health of her husband, saying the Ukawa-backed Chadema presidential candidate was fine and fit to run for the highest office in the land.

Ms Lowassa, who has maintained a low profile since Mr Lowassa resigned as Premier, in 2008, made her first major public pronouncement on her husband's bid for the presidency.

And when she spoke yesterday, she chose to tackle her husband's health issue which has been a matter of public speculation and political banter since he declared his intention to run for Ikulu with an opposition ticket after he was rejected by CCM.

"A lot is being g said out there about my husband, but let me tell you that I have known him for a very long time, he is a caring, loving and powerful husband who loves development and humanity," she said amid cheers from the crowd which thronged the Blue Pearl Hall in Dar es Salaam

She said said ever since her family defected to the opposition, she has seen Tanzanians expressing confidence and faith in her husband saying they made the right decision.

She was speaking at the Dar es Salaam hotel during a meeting that brought together scores of Dar es Salaam. The gathering was organised by the Chadema Women Wing and chaired by outgoing Kawe MP Halima Mdee.

The meeting was also attended various opposition leaders including Mr Lowassa's running mate, Mr Juma Duni Haji, Ukawa co-chair James Mbatia and a representative from the Civic United Front (CUF).

The place was packed to capacity with those failed to get in watxhing the proceding on television screens outside.

In his remarks, Mr Lowassa said he has started the campaign process with confidence saying he will surprise the ruling party come October 25.

"I want all of you to go and look for votes because am sure if women have decided nobody can say No," he said.

It'll be great if she start campaigning as well, if this wasn't a starting point.

The title indicates that Lowassa's fit as a fiddle. However,I don't that reference in the article itself.
