Ashok Leyland, Indiaβs second biggest maker of trucks and buses, has said it will open a Sh1 billion (
$10.4 million) bus factory in Kenya this year. This will be its first wholly owned manufacturing plant in Africa.
The giant auto maker which is the fourth largest manufacturer of buses in the world and the 16th largest producer of trucks globally said the Kenya bus assembly plant would act as its regional hub, with an annual capacity of making 1,200 buses. Ashok Leyland will assemble both buses and trucks at the plant.
βWe are setting up a bus assembly plant in Kenya through a wholly-owned subsidiary.
βThis plant will have an annual capacity of 1,200 buses,β Ashok Leyland senior vice-president (Global Buses), Thyagarajan Venkataraman said in a statement.
As part of its bid to bolster its presence in the regionβs automotive industry, Mr Venkataraman said the new plant would serve at least three East African countries, besides catering to local Kenya demand.
Ashok Leyland chief financial officer Gopal Mahadevan said the Kenya base would enable the auto maker entrench a foothold in the Kenyan truck market currently dominated by the Chinese.
βThe African markets are at present being addressed mostly by Chinese players. Ashok Leyland has a strong potential to establish its presence with its new range of cost-competitive trucks and buses,β said Mr Mahadevan.
The Ashok Leyland brand is currently being assembled through local assembler Kenya Vehicle Manufacturer (KVM).
The KVM is owned 35 per cent by the government and 32.5 per cent each by DT Dobie and CMC Holdings.
The Kenyan market is estimated to account for 4,000 units of truck sales each year and is expected to double in the next few years.
