At least 35 students were seriously injured during a fight over unfair treatment at Jamhuri High School in Nairobi.
Some of them were stabbed during the chaos that started on Tuesday when a Muslim and a Christian reportedly differed in the dining hall.
Students who spoke to The Star on Wednesday said the Muslim was in form one and his schoolmate in form four.
The matter was reported to principal Fred Awuor who calmed the students but trouble started again on Wednesday.
This was reportedly after another Muslim student was taken off a queue to the dining hall for getting ahead of his schoolmates.
"The matter worsened and even escalated to the classrooms. The principal came but he was roughed up by our Muslim schoolmate," one of the learners said.
Muslim students accused Awuor of discrimination and favouring their Christian counterparts.
Learner Mohammed Gulled said: "He is the person diving us. Christians are favoured. We have lessons until 4.30pm so we cannot pray. He has brought guards who are now in charge of the mosque. That is not right. We don't carry bombs to this place."
But Awuor reported that the problem began last evening when the two students fought outside the school compound. He said matters escalated today.
Several security officers led by Nairobi police commander Japeth Koome rushed to the school and contained the situation. Those injured were taken to hospital.
Religious leaders, education officials, parents and teachers went to the school to counsel students.
