Let's put this in perspective, umeweka data hapa kuonyesha Kenya is earning more that Tanzania in terms of tourism contribution to GDP. Na umechaguwa only one source support your argument - WTTC. First of all, the data is from 2016 this means old, second the accuracy of that is questionable because it is sourced through survey of the people working in industry (most likely private sector) either by country or by region.

But its global known ur offering cheaper tourism product compared to Tanzania. U will be stupid to argue with Balala, ur Tourism CS.

Dar es Salaam — Kenya has admitted that it has been losing tourists to Tanzania in recent years.

Speaking on Kenya's Citizen television on Tuesday, the country's Tourism and Wildlife minister, Mr Najib Balala, voiced concern about the state of hotels in the country, saying that lack of adequate world-class hotels in Kenya had made Tanzania a better proposition for tourists in East Africa.

"The reason why Tanzania did better than us in 2017 is because their hotels are brand new and modern while our hotels are 40 years old," he said.


Mr Balala noted that while the number of tourist arrivals in Kenya increased from 1,342,899 in 2016 to 1,474,671 in 2017, the country had the potential of attracting many more tourists if hotel infrastructure and customer service were improved.

"The biggest challenge that we have as an industry is security. Our porous border with Somalia is also a concern for our visitors. However the situation is normalising," he said.

"People are not just coming because they want a hotel bed around them. They want activities around their vacation. They want to feel the experience. They don't want to come to the airport and be harassed by an immigration officer or a taxi driver or go to a hotel with substandard service."

Mr Balala said Kenya targeted to attract 2.5 million tourists annually by 2022, adding that the government had engaged hoteliers and agreed on the standards needed to attain the goal.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Tanzania has been increasing steadily since breaking the once-elusive 1 million-mark for the first time in 2012.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, there were 1,137,182 tourist arrivals in 2015, and the number rose to 1,284,279 in 2016, which translated into a 12.9 per cent jump.

Tourism earned Tanzania $2.3 billion (Sh5 trillion) last year, up from $2 billion (Sh4.4 trillion) in 2016. Earnings in 2015 were $1.9 billion (Sh4.18 trillion).

International tourist arrivals worldwide grew by six per cent in the first four months of 2017 compared to the same period the previous year, with business confidence reaching its highest levels in a decade, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Sustained growth in most major destinations and a steady rebound in others drove results. Destinations worldwide received 369 million international tourists (overnight visitors) in the first four months of 2017, 21 million more than in the same months of 2016, according to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

International arrivals reported by destinations around the world were positive overall, with very few exceptions. Most of 2016's strong performers maintained momentum, while destinations that struggled in previous years continued to rebound in the first part of 2017.

In mid-February Vice-president Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the 340bn/- (US$150 million) Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project with the World Bank’s International Development Association to improve conservation management and infrastructure in southern Tanzania.

Slated for completion in September 2023, a key focus of the initiative will be to improve connectivity to the southern safari circuit, a 77,000-sq-km area of game reserves and national parks. Despite its high tourism potential, the region currently attracts only one per cent of all tourists to Tanzania due to a lack of transport links such as roads and airstrips, with visitors preferring to visit the country’s well-established northern circuit.

Projects to be carried out under the programme include construction of 15 airstrips at four national parks – the Selous Game Reserve, the Ruaha National Park, the Mikumi National Park and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park – in addition to a new road from Iringa town to the entrance of the Ruaha National Park, according to Hamisi Kigwangalla, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism.

Visitors to the parks could increase from 98,500 to 135,000 as a result of the programme, according to the World Bank, and provide 5,000 tourism jobs. The recent investments are vital to ensuring Tanzania reaches its tourism potential.

While international tourists have increased almost 90 per cent over the past decade – surging by 12.9 per cent to 1.3 million in 2016 alone – inadequate infrastructure is still a major barrier for the industry, with poor roads and power shortages adversely affecting the tourist experience, according to PwC’s “African Insights Hotels Outlook: 2017-2021” report.

Receipts up, room revenue growth forecast

While the REGROW project is being externally funded, an increase in tourism-related revenue seen last year could foster greater state investment in the sector going forward.

Foreign exchange earnings from travel, of which tourism receipts were the main contributor, increased by 2.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to hit US$2.2 billion in the January-November period of 2017, according to the Bank of Tanzania. Meanwhile, revenue from the services sector rose by 3.3 per cent y-o-y to US$3.7 billion.

Further positive news came in January, when Kigwangalla announced that the sector had contributed around 25 per cent of the country’s foreign currency in 2017, and that its value added had grown by 12 per cent to 4.7trn/- (US$2.1 billion).

The hotel industry also remained resilient, with room revenue growing to US$224 million in 2016, representing a 7.7 per cent increase on 2015, according to PwC. While this was forecast to drop to US$216 million last year, as a result of the introduction of a value-added tax on tourism services, earnings are expected to reach US$240 million in 2018 and US$371 million by 2021.

As per PwC data, this would represent 6.9 per cent compound annual growth between 2017 and 2021. By comparison, the competing markets of Kenya, South Africa and Mauritius are expected to record increases of 7.5 per cent, 9.3 per cent and 6.2 per cent, respectively.

Government efforts to improve connectivity, including airport upgrades, were a key contributor to PwC’s positive outlook for Tanzania. Based on PwC’s predictions, the number of hotel rooms in Tanzania is also set to expand by 2.5 per cent this year to 8100, and are expected to number 8500 units by 2021.

Tanzania welcomes high-end hospitality brands

Many of these new keys are set to come from the opening of new high-end hotels, with UAE-based Rotana Hotel Management Corporation in the process of constructing its five-star Johari Rotana in Dar es Salaam, which will comprise 256 hotel rooms and suites upon completion later this year.

One project that will add hotel room inventory and permanent residences in the near and medium term is the US$1.6 billion, 650-ha mixed-use Zanzibar Amber Resort in the north-east of Zanzibar. Being developed by Pennyroyal Gibraltar, the coastal site involves the construction of a deep-water marina, aqua park and golf course.

Phase one of the project was launched in January and consisted of 47 luxury, two-storey villas available for purchase by both locals and foreigners, marking the first time that non-residents have been able to buy property on the island. Five international hotels are also being built at the site, two of which are being constructed by Thailand’s Anantara and US-based Ritz Carlton.

Expected to open its doors in 2020, the Anantara Zanzibar Resort will have 100 rooms and 50 pool villas, and comprise a spa, gym, three restaurants and a bar. The Ritz Carlton is expected to open a year later and will have 90 rooms and suites.

WB dishes out 94bn/- for expansion of Nduli airport

THE World Bank (WB) will dish out loans worth 94 billion/- for the expansion of Nduli airport in Iringa Region, the National Assembly was told.


Speaking during the question and answer session in Dodoma yesterday, the Deputy Minister for Works and Communication Elias Kwandikwa said the funds would be used to extend the landing lane to 2,500 metres.

He was responding to a supplementary question asked by Rita Kabati, a Special Seats legislator (CCM) who wanted to know when the government will fulfil its promise of upgrading the airport.

Reacting, the deputy minister Kuandikwa said the expansion project of Nduli airport would also involve construction of passengers’ waiting lounge and staff houses.

“The World Bank has agreed to disburse the stated amount of loans for construction of Nduli airport which plays a crucial role for economic development in the southern highland zone,” he said.

Regarding compensation, the deputy minister said all people who have been moved out for the construction of said airport will get their money on time.

“The government has already set aside money for compensation, once feasibility study is completed all people will be paid without delay,” he added.

Speaking during an event to launch a project dubbed resilient natural resources for tourism and growth (REGROW), two months ago at Kihesa area in Iringa Region, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was quoted as urging improvement of Nduli airport

“We should give first priority for the improvement of Nduli airport and infrastructures leading to Ruaha National Park to improve tourism attractions in the southern circuit, “VP said.

According to the Ministry of Works and Transport the government would upgrade more than ten airports including Nduli in order to boost the country’s growing number passengers and cargo.

Under the expansion plan, the three dilapidated airports will get new airport terminal buildings, runways and drainage systems.

Jana na ID yako nyingine umetukimbiza hapa na ma-estimated figures, WTTC hawana uwezo wa kujuwa exactly number of staff working in Kenya or Tanzania hotels. Hawawezikuwa na accurate figure of how much tourist have been spending while on holiday. They can only rely on the information pass to them by their members and other research teams. Wanaweza predict the trend but that can easily change if there is disruption on industry or country.

Fake cement mixer, TRA has only part of tourism revenue, Tz Gvt has many resorts and parks that it operates and that revenue is not counted as Tax

You trust mzungu who is seating in London office rather than your own Gov. Revenue generated from touring 2017 is $1.2bn for Kenya, and $2.3bn for Tanzania (2017). Contribution to GDP in Kenya was 8.2% and Tanzania was 17% same year.

Now piga hesabu mwenyewe. $85bln - 8.2% compare with $51 bln - 17%.
