Thanks to its immense size, Zanzibar Amber will be the largest luxury property in Africa, and will be the very first to offer non-residents the opportunity to buy vacation homes.

In the video below, the managing director for the new space explains the future goals for the property:

While the full design elements and pricing are still being planned for the property, the space will also include an underwater restaurant and nightclub, a souk where guests can spend their time shopping, a fully equipped equestrian center and international polo club, and a facility for super yachts.

When it comes to residential opportunities, there will be some 1,914 luxury villas that range from three to five bedrooms, and some 3,440 luxury and penthouse apartments that range from one to four bedrooms to choose from.

It will also have medical facilities for residents and visitors and a private international school.

Visitors can look forward to the Ritz Carlton, Zanzibar, which will be an all-suite and villa resort with 90 rooms and over water villas that each have their own private pool.

"With the commissioning of this luxury tropical resort by Pennyroyal Gibraltar the premium hospitality offerings and world-class facilities will benchmark luxury in Africa," representatives from Pennyroyal Gibraltar, the firm building the property, told The National in an interview regarding the endeavor.

Though the first residential property is planned to open this year, the golf course and several of the hotels are slated for completion in 2019, with the full completion of the first phase expected by 2020.

The Seven Best Hotels In Zanzibar to Stay At

After four months of driving from Cape Town to Dar Es Salaam, when we arrived on the island we set out to find the best hotels in Zanzibar. After all, the hotels and resorts of Zanzibar are designed for decompression after a long safari in Tanzania. It’s the perfect place to trade in your safari attire and binoculars for a bathing suit and a coconut water.

The island’s coastline is fringed by white sand beaches and the turquoise waters of a tropical Indian Ocean. Zanzibar is the perfect place to sit on the beach, drink some coconuts, and forget. However, there is depth to the sunny island, a history that dates back centuries and involves slaves, sultans, spices, war, and culture.

Determining the best hotels on the island was an easy feat. The best hotels in Zanzibar are The Residence Zanzibar, Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Emerson Spice, Kilindi Zanzibar, Essque Zalu, and Tulia Beach Resort.

Best Hotels In Zanzibar

The Residence Zanzibar

Guests don’t get a room at The Residence Zanzibar – instead they get a large villa. Each villa comes with a spacious bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower, bathtub, and his and hers sinks. The bedroom in the villa features a king sized four poster bed that faces sliding glass doors that reveal a private patio. The highlight of the room lies on the patio, each villa comes with a beautiful glass tiled private pool. The pools at The Residence Zanzibar truly sparkle.

We found it difficult to depart from our villa; however, the centerpiece of the property has to be the main pool and restaurant. It was by all accounts the best pool we found on the island. The sparkling water of the massive infinity pool comes to a dramatic end with glass walls providing light and views out to the private beach. This is where we passed our time – poolside with a good book and waiting for a singing attendant to deliver us ice cream everyday.

The private beach near Kizimkazi is one of the most secluded on the island and one of best beaches on Zanzibar. The white sand beaches here are perfect for those wanting a private beach escape. We started to feel a little too relaxed, so we took to the water with the resorts paddle boards and some snorkel gear. We found plenty of activities on the resort to keep ourselves entertained between birding, biking, swimming, water sports, and billiards.

The whole feel of the hotel keeps in touch with the island. The main reception is a large open building with ottoman style archways and the scent of spices floating through the air. The restaurant serves up a mix of contemporary food and draws inspiration from the island’s history of spice. The Residence has a clear spot on the list of best hotels in Zanzibar.

The Residence Zanzibar Highlights for us:The crystal clear pools, modern room and amenities, fast WiFi.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar

The Park Hyatt Zanzibar is an exquisite hotel delivered in a way only capable of a Park Hyatt Zanzibar and is easily one of the top 10 hotels in Zanzibar. The hotel finds a perfect balance between the brands signature look and the former palace that the main building now occupies. The interiors of the hotel embody the atmosphere of Stone Town with features such as intricate chandeliers, archways, lanterns, trellises, carved wood, and crown molding.

The beds are heavenly, the robes are fresh, and a TV is literally built over the bathtub. The room’s private balconies are a splendid way to soak up afternoons sipping on espresso from the in-room Nespresso machine. The rooms at the Park Hyatt are the most comfortable on Zanzibar.

Despite our views of everyday beach life from our room, we made good use out of the pool, gym, and hotel library. The hotel pool is the perfect place to spend the day watching the lively Stone Town beach. When the evening time rolls around we have to recommend their happy hour where we picked up two bourbon cocktails at half price and made our American-selves happy.

If you tire of the hotel grounds the property is located in the center of Stone Town. Some of our favorite days were spentwandering the streets of Stone Town that has all the charms of Arabic medinas, but none of the hassle.

The Park Hyatt Highlights for us: Park Hyatt brand, balcony, fitness center, beautiful room, fast WiFi, comfort, and location.

Emerson Spice

Emerson Spice is a restored Merchant’s House turned boutique Zanzibar hotel in the center of Stone Town. The hotel has eleven rooms that are all individually decorated and named accordingly. Our room was Semele, a room too beautiful for her own good covered with pastel blue walls, stained windows, and ceiling to floor burgundy curtains.

The rooms are filled with antique furniture and rich textures. Small touches like locally produced soaps and towels, antique books and even air con are featured in each room. Passion has been poured into the Emerson Spice and it is obvious.

We felt as if we’d cast away in the days of old. Time slowed down and we soaked up the atmosphere of the buzzing Stone Town streets from our private balcony.

Food at the Emerson Spice is a special occasion. We dined in the newest addition to the Emerson Spice, their Secret Garden restaurant. The restaurant is hidden away in ruins neighboring Emerson Spice. Diners revel in the open air restaurant while the head chef prepares the majority of meals in a blaze of smoke on a charcoal grill. We couldn’t resist and went with their seafood platter a mix of fresh lobster, prawns, and barracuda – delicious.

Emerson Spice Highlights for us: The abundance of charm and character, Secret Garden restaurant, and excellent location.

Emerson on Hurumzi

Located a five-minute walk away from the Emerson Spice is her sister hotel, the Emerson on Hurumzi. The building was built in the 1870’a by Sir Tharia Topna, a powerful merchant in Zanzibar. Just like the Emerson Spice entering the hotel is akin to being transported back in time.

There was no end to Stone Town when we entered our room as the city drifts in through trellised walls from the balcony. Our room, North, features a roof top shower and bathtub that provided views of the cityscape. The beautiful antiques feel right at home in the room.

Dinner on the Rooftop Tea House was our most memorable in Zanzibar and should be experienced by all who visit Stone Town.Diners sit atop cushions and large Persian rugs on the hotel’s roof while a velvet roof dances in the wind. Evening cocktails begin at 18:00 and dinner is served at 19:00, make sure to book a spot in advance as the demand is high. The restaurant serves a blend Persian and Omani food in a tasting menu every night. If you’re lucky you can visit on an evening with live entertainment from one of the many talented bands in Zanzibar.

When morning rolled around we enjoyed a healthy and light breakfast on our rooms private balcony. The Emerson on Hurumziand the Emerson Spice embody everything Zanzibar and when you lay your head down at night you don’t leave the island you remain in its heart.

Emerson on Hurumzi Highlights for us: Rooftop Tea House dinner and entertainment, large and comfortable bathtubs, breakfast on the patio overlooking Stone Town.

Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort

Pongwe is in running for not only the best beach on Zanzibar but one of the best in the world. Taking in this secluded white sand beach can be done with the Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort. In Swahili, Tulia means to relax and that is exactly how the intimate resort is designed. The 15 villas are spread across a lush garden and central pool bar.

Guests are greeted by a friendly staff and whisked away to rooms waiting with a bottle of wine, greeting card, and a bed of flowers. The rooms here are spacious, comfortable and modern. The large king bed sits on a platform and provides views out of the room to the garden or sea. The best part? Tulia advertises the fastest WiFi on the island. As travel bloggers, we can attest and confirm that the WiFi at Tulia was indeed the fastest, we have the stats!

Tulia is a Zanzibar hotel that is all inclusive with inspiring food and cocktails included in the price. We spent the morning on the stand-up paddle boards and kayaks. While our afternoons were spent sipping pina colodas around the unique hotel pool. Which, is also home to one of the only waterslides on the island. We could not resist acting like a pair of kids again and went for races down the slide.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort have local and international chefs cooking up some delicious food from an ever-changing menu. After dinner, the pool bar is the perfect place to relax with a nightcap while staring at the Zanzibar night sky. Tulia hit all the marks for us and had the perfect blend of fun, relaxation, and intimacy.

Tulia Beach Resort Highlights for us:Intimate feeling with attentive staff, fast WiFi, beautiful pool and beach, and of course the waterslides!

Kilindi Zanzibar

The most exclusive of all the resorts on Zanzibar is without a doubt Kilindi Zanzibar. The resort is near Kendwa on the Northwestern part of the island and is one of the top Zanzibar hotels on the beach. Its large grounds give plenty of privacy to its 15 villas that pop up from a lush hillside. The white-washed domed villas feel like a sultan’s palace that should only be fit for a king or a pop celebrity. In fact, the resort was formerly the private residence of ABBA band member, Benny Andersson.

Privacy is key at Kilindi and each villa has two private plunge pools, an open rainfall shower, and personal lounge area. The villas feel right at home on the island and are decorated with very few details. Guests will instead find small touches like seashells, a book, or a few pieces of furniture. Each room comes with a valet to deliver meals, plan activities, collect laundry, and assist with whatever the guest may need while staying at the resort.

The infinity pool at Kilindi Zanzibar overlooks the most beautiful bay in Zanzibar, filled with dhows and turquoise water.

Guests at Kilindi are given complete freedom. Every breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be served at any time and anywhere. The food at Kilindi is superb and every course is cooked from the freshest ingredients, as the chef opts to grow and buy local. It is easily the best food on the island, but there is nothing pretentious about the atmosphere in which it is served.

We opted to always have breakfast from the comfort of our private lounge area, while lunch was spent around the pool, and dinner was spent in some of Kilindi’s secret hideaway spots. It may have taken some convincing for us to get dragged away from Kilindi. Kilindi may take the top accolade for the best hotels in Zanzibar, but it does come with the highest price tag on this list.

Kilindi Zanzibar highlights for us: Privacy of villas, stunning and secluded beach, and the best food on the island.

Essque Zalu Zanzibar

This Zanzibar hotel is not for the faint of heart, at Essque Zalu bigger is better. It is one of the largest resorts on Zanzibar, but the intimacy of Zanzibar has not been lost. Essque Zalu Zanzibar sits at the Northern end of Zanzibar, close by to Nungwi Beach.

The rooms are comfortable with large beds, patios, walk in closets, lounges, rainfall showers, and a desk. We spent some time reading a book from our patio in the beautiful gardens of the resort.

Guests can spend their days soaking up the sun by the massive pool at Essque Zalu Zanzibar. The location of the hotel on top of a small cliff may not present it access to the beach; however, what Essque Zalu lacks in beach it makes up for with a beautiful jetty. Yes, the longest jetty on Zanzibar resides here and is the perfect place to come and relax anytime of the day. It’s also one of the only parts of the island where you can catch both sunrise and sunset!

The hotel features two restaurants and we made a point to have dinner at both. The Jetty offer relaxed vibes and a grill. While Market Kitchen served up the better meals in a more polished atmosphere. The staff at both restaurants impressed us with their attentiveness, smiles, and welcoming attitude.

We also loved being able to get in a workout with the fitness center after eating too much of the delicious food on Zanzibar. The Essque rounds our list of the best hotels in Zanzibar making one drool-worthy list. If you asked us to pick one of the above it would be tough, so maybe just try them all like us!

Highlights of Essque Zalu Zanzibar: The intimate and picturesque jetty, well-equipped fitness center, and extremely well cared for gardens and grounds.

Tanzania: Dar's Maiden Geopark Eyes 22bn/ - Financial Boost

Arusha — CHINA will provide Tanzania's maiden Geopark with 10 million US dollars (over 22bn/-) financial support.

The Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark is earmarked to cover 12,000 square kilometres of rocky hills, lengthy underground caves, lake basins, hominid discovery sites and the active Oldonyo L'engai, Volcano.

The Geopark will be the second in Africa, after the one in Morocco and the first South of the Sahara. Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) Conservator Dr Freddy Manongi says of the Geopark, "While tourists from America and Europe prefer game driving into National Parks to view wildlife; the Chinese and other Asians are different."

According to Dr Manongi, tourists from China, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries prefer seeing landscapes, mountains, caves, gorges and other geological features.

He believes that the country will use the Geopark to attract visitors from Asia, with China alone offering a huge market of 1.4 billion people for Tanzania's geology based tourism.

"We are striving to expand the country's tourism potentials by introducing attractions based on land formations, geology, history and geographical features, all packaged in singly as Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark," Olduvai Gorge Deputy Conservator Orgoo Mauyai explains. Olduvai is part of the proposed Geopark.

The main economic activities in the envisaged Ngorongoro- Lengai Geopark is pastoralism especially along Maasai and Datoga, agriculture, tourism and small scale trading.

"The Geopark theme is how local residents earn a living from these geological features without interfering with their natural settings," stated Mr Nickson Nyange, one of the Public Relations Officers at NCAA.

Ngorongoro Lengai is tipped to become a popular tourist destination for tourists visiting the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Natron and Eyasi as well as tourists to other national parks like Lake Manyara and Serengeti.

The first ever sub-Saharan Geopark project was initiated by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) under the European Union (EU) funding.

NCAA Cultural Heritage Department acting Manager Engineer Joshua Mwankunda says the EU has already floated 1.8 million Euros (over 4bn/-) as initial funding to the project.

Identification and establishment of geo-sites are a result of territorial analysis by the Promotion of Earth and Human Heritage of Ngorongoro by valorisation of the Oldupai and from reserve Geologique of Haute de France with support and collaboration from local residents.

The analysis produced a database of geo-sites mapped within the Ngorongoro-Lengai and Laetoli 'Geopark.' It also involved members from the district councils, Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and the National Museum.

Tanzania: Dar's Maiden Geopark Eyes U.S.$10 Million Financial Boost

Antonym to National Parks, Geoparks are unified geographical areas that address the protection and use of geological heritage in a sustainable way while promoting social and economic well-being of the people within the earmarked locations.

Tanzania unveils plan to promote southern tourism circuit

Source: Xinhua| 2017-10-03 04:37:37|Editor: huaxia

ARUSHA, Tanzania, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania on Monday unveiled a plan to promote tourist attractions in the southern circuit, a senior official said Monday.

Jumanne Maghembe, Tanzania's Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, described southern tourism circuit as untapped potential when it comes to tourist attractions.

"One of our commitments to make this strategy implemented is to improve the infrastructure of the area including roads, airports and accommodation facilities. We want to see key tourist destinations are packaged in better ways so that it encourages tourists to see the importance of visiting those areas," he said.

The official added that the government recognizes the contribution of tourism to the national economic growth.

According to Maghembe, the Tanzanian government working with the World Bank (WB) were strategizing on how to improve the infrastructures leading to Ruaha, Udzungwa, Kitulo National Parks and Selous Game Reserve.

"It is indisputable fact that the Southern Circuit has a lot of unique historical sites and national parks with rare animal species in the world," he explained, noting that improving infrastructures would play a significant role in attracting tourists in the area.

He said promoting the Southern Circuit would also go hand in hand with intensifying the war against poaching in the country.

"We are also promoting investments in hotels of three and five stars. It is my hope that we will be receiving tourists/visitors of different levels," the minister said .

Tourism is among the Tanzania's key sectors of the economy, contributing to 17 percent of the East African nation's GDP. Enditem

Hyatt Expected to Double Number of Hotels in Africa by 2020

October 03, 2017 10:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hyatt Hotels & Resorts today announced that Hyatt expects to double the number of Hyatt hotels in Africa, with six new hotels expected to open by 2020. The developments are expected to see the Hyatt brand enter four new countries on the African continent and are expected to create approximately 2,100 new jobs once open.

East Africa is one of Hyatt’s primary focus areas in the near term, with the region benefiting from continued government investment in infrastructure, an expanding middle class and a growing international recognition of the region’s stability, all contributing to an 11% growth in Sub-Saharan African tourism in the past year alone. According to theUNWTO World Tourism Barometer, the first half of 2017 saw a 14% increase in international arrivals in East Africa over the same period in 2016, with intra-Africa travel up nearly 13% for the same period.

“The development opportunities for Hyatt in Africa are significant, and we see enormous potential in the region. This expansion reinforces our commitment to developing our pipeline in Africa,” said Peter Penev, vice president acquisitions and development for Hyatt. “With the introduction of a Pan-African, visa-free passport next year alongside the continued improvement in the connectivity and growth of the region’s airlines, we expect tourist and business travel will only continue to increase. We look forward to working with our local developers and partners to further deliver on our ambitious plan to help grow the hotel industry in East Africa.”

Of Hyatt’s expected six new hotels, four are market entries: Hyatt Regency Algiers Airport, Algeria (late 2018); Hyatt Regency Douala, Cameroon (late 2020); Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (summer 2018) and Hyatt Centric Dakar, Senegal (summer 2018). In its established markets, Hyatt is expanding its footprint with Park Hyatt Marrakech, Morocco (early 2019) and Hyatt Regency Arusha, Tanzania (early 2019), each becoming the third Hyatt-branded hotel in each country, respectively. As part of a long-term plan to expand in Sub-Saharan Africa, Hyatt will continue to look for further opportunities across countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Hyatt Regency

Hyatt Regency Algiers Airport, Algeria will be part of a wider airport expansion in one of North Africa’s largest cities. The 326-room hotel will be situated directly opposite the airport’s new terminal and will be the only terminal-linked hotel. Centrally located at the entry to the airport, Hyatt Regency Algiers Airport will be designed so that guests can easily make connections and deliver a one-stop experience.

Hyatt Regency Douala, Cameroon will be a 200-room hotel with 1,200 m2 of event facilities that will make the hotel a go-to gathering place for any occasion. Located on 2 acres of land in the heart of Bonanjo district of Douala, Hyatt Regency Douala, Cameroon will be an ideal destination for business travellers. Bonanjo is the financial hub of the city and in proximity of the headquarters of many major banking and insurance companies and the port; it’s also within a 2km radius to Akwa, the traditional central business district and upscale residential district Bonapriso.

Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, Ethiopia will feature 180 rooms and will be situated ideally for business travellers in the central Kirkos district, within the heart of Africa’s fourth largest city. This location will offer excellent access to some of Addis Ababa’s most significant destinations, including Meksel Square, the National Palace, the UNECA Conference Centre and the African Union headquarters. The lively Mercato district, Africa’s largest open market and home to the largest mosque in Ethiopia, will be easily reached from the hotel, and the airport will be a short 5.5 km trip away.

Hyatt Regency Arusha, Tanzania will be the third Hyatt hotel in Tanzania. The 144-room hotel will occupy a 29 acre site in central Arusha, a city in northern Tanzania and home to the East African Community headquarters, an intergovernmental organization. Located in the heart of Arusha, the hotel will be in close proximity to some of Africa’s most famous natural landscapes and national parks, including Tarangire National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Tanzania to host key tourism expo

Source: Xinhua| 2017-10-11 03:48:45|

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's public tourism body said on Tuesday it will host an in-door International Tourism Expo, known as the Swahili International Tourism Expo in the east African nation's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

The three-day tourism expo to be held on Oct.13 has attracted Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Mauritius, South Africa, Malawi, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and India, said Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) Managing Director Devota Mdachi.

The expo will be held at the Chinese-built Julius Nyerere International Convention Center (JNICC), she told a news conference.

Mdachi said 150 tourist-related institutions and companies from 13 African countries and 186 tourist agents from across the world will meet their local counterparts and discuss how to promote the industry.

She said the tourist agents will come from India, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Morocco, adding that after completion of the expo the agents will visit various tourist attractions in Tanzania.

The Swahili International Tourism Expo focuses on inbound and outbound travel business to and within Africa.

The event showcases the travel possibilities in Tanzania - within and beyond the well-known attractions in 16 National Parks, around Mount Kilimanjaro and on the beautiful beaches on the Island of Zanzibar.

Conservation and sustainable tourism, as well as tropical tourism and traveling within East Africa, are additional subjects to be promoted during the expo.

A new report released in June this year rated Tanzania's tourism industry as one of the fastest growing sectors in the east African country with figures showing a surge on tourist arrivals.

The 2016 International Visitors' Exit Survey Report indicated that the number of tourists who visited the country, east Africa's second largest economy, continued to rise.

The report showed that Tanzania hosted at least 1,284,279 tourists in 2016, compared to 1,137,156 in 2015, which was an increase of 12 percent.

The report showed revenues from the tourism industry had been rising year after year with 2.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 against 1.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.

Tourism is Tanzania's largest foreign exchange earner since 2012, contributing an average of 2 billion U.S. dollars annually, which is equivalent to 25 percent of all exchange earnings, according to government data.

Tourism also contributes to more than 17 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP), creating more than 1.5 million jobs.

Paleontologists discover ancient bobcat-sized carnivore!

Paleontologists working in Tanzania have identified a new species of hyaenodont, a type of extinct meat-eating mammal. The study is published today, National Fossil Day, in the journal PLOS ONE and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

After the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago, hyaenodonts were the main predators on the African continent. The newly discovered animal is called Pakakali rukwaensis, the name derived from the Swahili term "pakakali," meaning "fierce cat," and "rukwaensis," the word for the Rukwa Rift region of the Great Rift Valley in southwestern Tanzania.

Between 23 and 25 million years ago, newcomers arrived in Africa -- the first relatives of modern dogs, cats and hyenas -- where they coexisted with hyaenodonts for millions of years. But eventually, hyaenodonts went extinct.

"The shift from hyaenodonts to modern carnivores in Africa is like a controlled experiment," says study co-author Matthew Borths of Ohio University.

"We start with only hyaenodonts. Then the relatives of cats and dogs arrive. They coexist for a few million years, then the hyaenodonts are driven to extinction and we're left with 'The Lion King.' With Pakakali, we can start to unravel that extinction. Were the lineages competing? Were they adapting differently to a drier, more open landscape?"

The new fossil helps researchers unravel extinction dynamics for predatory mammals stalking African ecosystems of that long-ago time.

"This new carnivore, discovered in Tanzania sediment deposits dating from 25 million years ago, provides new information about the transition of carnivores in older ecosystem types to carnivores in today's African ecosystems," says Judy Skog, program director in NSF's Division of Earth Sciences, which funded the research.

The new hyaenodont species was discovered in the same 25 million-year-old rocks as the oldest fossil evidence of the split between Old World monkeys and apes. At that time, the ecosystem was undergoing dramatic climate and tectonic upheavals as Africa collided with Eurasia and the modern East African Rift System formed.

The fossil gives paleontologists a glimpse of hyaenodont anatomy before modern carnivores invaded the continent, revealing that Pakakali was about the size of a bobcat.

Based on the findings of the study, hyaenodonts may have been pushed to become more specialized meat-eaters due to competition from other species. That dietary specialization may have made hyaenodonts more vulnerable to extinction in the changing African ecosystem by leaving them with fewer food choices.

Pakakali was discovered by an international team of scientists from the United States, Australia and Tanzania as part of the Rukwa Rift Basin Project (RRBP), an interdisciplinary collaboration examining the development of the modern African ecosystem. In more than a decade of exploration, RRBP researchers have described the habitat Pakakali called home along with many other animals that occupied the ecosystem.

"The environment containing Pakakali reveals a fascinating window into extinction," says Nancy Stevens, co-author of the study and a paleontologist at Ohio University. "It highlights the vulnerability of carnivorous species to rapid environmental change, a topic we are grappling with on the African continent today."

Tanzania: Govt to Inject 300bn/ - for Southern Tourism Circuit Development

By Marc Nkwame in Arusha

THE government, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, plans to inject more than 300 billion/- to open up the Southern Tourism Circuit in effort to expand geographical coverage of local attractions.

"When you talk about tourism in Tanzania, 90 per cent of the industry seems to be pivoted in the Northern Circuit, especially Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro Crater," said the Minister for Tourism and Natural Resources, Dr Khamis Kigwangalla when addressing members of staff at the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Headquarters here.

Dr Kigwangalla was of the view that the Southern Circuit not only has the country's largest National Park, Ruaha, but also the Udzungwa range of mountains whose forest cover has more variety of tree species than the Amazon Forest.

"Not to mention the Eden of flowers, the colourful Kitulo National Park, abundant ecological features and the highest concentration of wildlife especially elephants and lions," maintained the Tourism Minister, adding that the Northern Circuit is already overwhelmed.

Dr Kigwangalla said the country's vision to record 2.2 million tourists annually can only be achieved through diversification of products, including opening up more areas through widening geographical coverage, improving ground services and speeding up the process of issuing tourism visas at entry points.

According to the Minister, the country receives around 1.2 million tourists per year and almost all of these end up in the Northern Circuit where sometimes eight tourist vehicles gather at one spot for the occupants to get a glimpse of a single lion.

"But in Ruaha National Park, a single tourist will be surrounded by more than eight lions for his viewing pleasure," he said, reiterating that, the country needs to seriously open up and support tourism industry down south in order to diversify the industry and its geographical coverage.

The proposed 300 billion/- will be invested in improving infrastructure and other amenities needed by visitors as well as to highly promote the southern parts of Tanzania including its rich culture, friendly people and cuisine.

"And, our tourism industry seems to be focused mostly on wildlife, but the country has rich resources and culture to guarantee more attractive features." Dr Kigwangalla lamented the slow pace of tourism growth.

"Our visitors' traffic increases by a margin of just 100,000 tourists per year; in 2015 we had 1.1 million visitors; last year 1.26 million and this year, possibly we may end up with 1.3 million tourists."

Earlier on, the TANAPA Director General, Dr Allan Kijazi, told the Minister that already 100 members of staff at the headquarters in Arusha had compiled some of the suggestions and ideas to improve services and these will be presented to him (Kigwangalla) before he returns to Dodoma at the end of this week.

Tanzania has a total of 16 National Parks, 25 game reserves and one conservation area authority.
