The welcome

After a short ride from the airport through busy, downtown Arusha, the Legendary Lodge is an oasis of calm surrounded by coffee plantations and mature botanical gardens. Bush-style welcome drinks await outside the central villa with cooling face flannels, smiling faces, and many hands to whisk your bags to your villa.

The neighbourhood

Although not far from busy downtown Arusha, the prevailing atmosphere is of an old-style colonial estate surrounded by well-tended gardens, the sound of bird-song and striking views over nearby Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro. Local activities include a tour of the coffee plantation and a (well-worthwhile) visit to the nearby Cultural Heritage Museum with its collections of tribal art and artefacts, sculptures and antiques.

The scene

Once you’re out in the bush on safari, there’s not much time to enjoy creature comforts, which is why Legendary Lodge is such a great place to relax and catch up on sleep and personal organisation before or after a long international flight pre- or post-safari.

The room

There are ten garden rooms (half-sections of villas) in the grounds, which create a home-from-home atmosphere, and which come with their own private terrace (ours had a direct view of Mount Meru) and a huge bedroom/sitting room with a four-poster bed. All have air conditioning, satellite TV and mini-bar, as well as a large bathroom/shower area. The decor is colonial in style. It’s chic, with a retro feel, comfortable leather sofas, high ceilings and wooden beams. A work desk is provided with free Wi-Fi. There are also two family houses with several bedrooms. All meals can be served in the room and the sound of cicadas at night whets the appetite for the African bush.

The service

Staff are friendly and always on hand or at the end of a telephone from the room. My wife had a medical emergency while we were staying, which was handled with great sensitivity and efficiency, so she was able to receive the rehydrating fluids required at a day-care centre without having to spend a night in hospital. The lodge’s own private nurse provided all the necessary advice and information, while arrangements and transfers to a clinic were all arranged with the minimum of fuss. Post-emergency, my wife spoke very highly of the massage and spa treatment at the end of our stay.

The food

Unless served in your room, meals are taken on the terrace of the main building overlooking the lawns and the garden. Fresh fruit dishes are a speciality for breakfast with a full-English, as well as continental options. The three-course dinners come with excellent fish and meat dishes (head chef Max’s chicken curry is highly recommended). All produce is locally sourced and sea-food is fresh every morning.

Loved

The peace and calm of the gardens and the Lodge’s old-school charm.

Hated

I hate myself for saying it, but … I hate having chairs pushed in under me when I sit down.

The verdict

A tropical oasis in the city that is often used as an overnight dormitory on the way to and from the bush, but is worth so much more.

The bottom Line

Rates at Legendary Lodge start from £286 (Dh1,379) per person.

The Trek for Mandela begins in a matter of days. And among the celebrities joining the team to trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro is eNCA prime time news presenter, Cathy Mohalahlana

READ: Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital turns 1

Mohlalana is part of a group that leaves later in the month.

But her training schedule has been hectic.

And she’s spoken about the intimidating final summit night, which is the steepest, coldest climb of 6-hours, to reach Uhuru Peak.

Mohlahlana says she’s psyching herself up for a special cause, that ensures disadvantaged schoolgirls have access to sanitary pads.

It is quite exciting and I must say, I have spent about four years thinking about this. That is how long it has taken to get my mind in the mental space.

Balloon safaris come to Ruaha National Park in Southern Tanzania
After successful years of tourist flights over Africa’s famous Serengeti National Park, the exciting balloon safari excursions have been extended to Ruaha National Park in Southern Tanzania.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris had introduced the hot-air balloon flights in Ruaha National Park, now counted among the biggest wildlife protected park in Africa.

The new type of hot air tourist safaris were introduced in Tanzania in 1989 with its early morning flights over the plains of the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania.

Flights started in the central Serengeti plains in 1989 and have flown over 250,000 enthralled safari-goers, including most of Tanzania’s celebrity visitors and royalty, after its first flight, reports from the Serengeti Balloon Safaris said.

John Corse, the Managing Director of Serengeti Balloon Safaris told eTurboNews that that the balloon safaris entered Ruaha National Park last month.

“We recently conducted test flights in Ruaha and they were an unmitigated success, very different flying conditions to Serengeti, fantastic game and gorgeous scenery,” Corse said.

Ruaha is the wildest park in Tanzania with its wide area remained untouched by human being and the wildest park in Tanzania with its wide area remained untouched by human hands, other than wild animals which have been given natural rights to occupy this famous park in Africa.

The wildlife is abundant in Ruaha and the scenery is spectacular. The park is such an exciting attraction, not only to the Tanzanian residents, but foreign visitors, whose experience in Africa is an essential part of their lives in the developed world.

Ruaha National Park has been combined with Usangu Game Reserve to increase its size by over 22,000 square kilometers, making it the largest National Park in Africa. It is located some 120 kilometers from Iringa town, and it takes two hours to drive through the rough road to the park, or eight hours drive from Tanzania’s commercial capital city of Dar es Salaam.

Ruaha National Park boasts of big herds of elephants, the largest population of any East African national park. It protects a vast tract of the rugged semi-arid bush country that characterizes central Tanzania. Its lifeblood is the Great Ruaha River which courses along the Eastern boundary of the park.

A fine network of game-viewing roads follows the Great Ruaha River and its seasonal tributaries, where, during the dry season, impala, waterbuck and other antelopes risk their life from hungry, ferocious crocodile just for a sip of life sustaining water.

The risk of the undulates lives is considerable, with 20-plus pride of lions lording over the savannah, the cheetahs that stalk the open grassland, and the leopards that lurk in tangled riverside thickets.

Ruaha is also home to over 450 bird species. The Usangu Game Reserve covers the Ihefu Wetland which is the natural water reservoir for the Great Ruaha River that snakes northwards to form the famous Rufiji River.

Watching a charging elephant bull, seeing mating lions or a herd of browsing zebras is an exciting experience in Ruaha National Park, counted the most remote wildlife sanctuary in East Africa.

Made up of the Great Ruaha River, the park boasts of great wildlife concentration in Tanzania where the wildest creatures could be found in abundance.

Occupied with deep pools and swirling waters of the Ruaha River, the park offers best wildlife excursion in Southern Tanzania’s tourist circuit after Serengeti in northern Tanzania.

The Ruaha River is the most attractive natural feature in the park. It support life to high number of hippos schools and crocodiles which cal all be encountered during a boat riding safari. Terrestrial animals can easily been seen quenching their thirst on the river banks while others just go to the river to wallow and play on its banks.

The park can be reached easily by air and road from Mbeya and Iringa airports. Even more adventurous are the trekking safaris which last for several days. A small group of trekkers start from the base camp with guides and game scouts. In the evening they set up their tents at a scenic spot and move on the following morning.

Unlike the northern parks, mass tourism is not observed in Ruaha, and ecologically friendly camps and lodges correlating to nature are the prominent tourist accommodation facilities there.

Tourists who come to the park to view wildlife can enjoy a unique and unspoiled wilderness. Balloon safaris in the park would be the other exciting service that has been introduced in this park to add its prominence among African wildlife parks.

The daily, early morning exciting balloon safaris flight takes up to 12 passengers, said Corse.

Ukweli ni kwamba, Kenya has nothing attractive to compare na Tanzania, even they know it too. Maasai Mara is just an extension of the Mighty Serengeti and goes into Serengeti about 10 times), Amboseli and Nairobi national parks are just useless and polluted with trash. Tuongee tu vitu vingine ila si tourist attractions, ni haibu.

Thanks for that good news (Introduction of Hot-air balloon specific for game viewing inside the Ruaha National Park). I hope gonna boost a lot upon tourism activities in and neighbouring villages like Idodi tarafani, Mapogoro as well as Tungamalenga. KARIBUNI SANA.

Hivi Kenya kuna Mt Kenya kweli? Mbona siuskii? Na jamaa wanajitamba mabingwa wa ku-market vivutio?

Jamani msiwatie haibu Wakenya, what's there to compare? FACT, Kenya does NOT have any natural attraction that rivals Tanzania, never. There is no damn national park in Kenya that is close to any of the useless national park here in Tanzania which is my bush garden; only Botswana and South Africa come close to us.

Hivi Kenya kuna Mt Kenya kweli? Mbona siuskii? Na jamaa wanajitamba mabingwa wa ku-market vivutio?

Hawana kitu, ila ni kweli zamani walikuwa wana market mbuga zao kwa sababu Tanzania tulikuwa na agenda nyingine kabisa ambayo ni ya kijinga ya kwamba watalii wakija na kuona mbuga zetu watarudi kwao kututangaza, this is where Kenya took the edge on us. Ila ukweli ni kwamba there's nothing attractive in Kenya when it comes to mbuga za wanyama, even Rwanda na Uganda have mbuga nzuri za wanyama japo ni ndogo.

President of Fenerbahçe at the top of Mt Kilimanjaro

And mostly important his trip was all over Turkish media. I tell u no need for joint EA marketing.

Kiukweli Kenya wenyewe hawakuwa wakijitangaza till of recent. They have all along been free riding from historical connections with the UK. Unfortunately we never had that advantage, the British people didn't give us that priority.
