The National Drug Authority (NDA) has impounded 545 boxes of assorted drugs and other medical supplies worth Shs163.5M from 349 unlicensed drug outlets in Acholi, Lango and Karamoja.
Part of the impounded drugs worth Shs 1m, Abiaz Rwamwiri the NDA spokesperson said, are Government Drugs.
“We impounded drugs labeled ‘Government of Uganda, not for Sale’ (Lumarterm, Artemether/Lumefantrine, HIV RDT kits, Determine HIV) from Gen Rwoth Drug Shop in Apaa, Amuru District,” Rwamwiri said.
He added that unregistered medicines labelled (Kifaro) smuggled from Kenya were also impounded from Ave Maria Drug Shop in Otuke district and the operators of the drug shop are on the run.
This was during a 12-day operation where 763 drug outlets were inspected in Abim, Agago, Aleptomg, Amolatar, Amuru, Apac, Dokolo Gulu Kitgum, Kole, Kwania, Lamwo, Lira, Nwoya, Omoro, Otuke, Oyam and Pader districts.
Of the 763 outlets, 2 were pharmacies, 711 human and 25 veterinary drug shops and 25 clinics. 401 outlets were licensed.
“This is part of NDA’s routine post market surveillance intended to protect the human and animal population from drugs and health care products that are substandard, counterfeit, unauthorized and, unqualified persons handling drugs among others,” he said.
Rwamwiri noted that it is only from licensed outlets, manned by qualified personnel that NDA can guarantee the safety and quality of medicines.
He advised all operators whose drug outlets have been closed and whose drugs have been impounded to report to NDA Regional offices in Lira for guidance on compliance requirements to avoid inconvenience.
“NDA appeals to the public to be vigilant and report any drug outlets that do not comply with standards,” he said.
