Musician Ken Wa Maria and George Mutinda, personal assistant to Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama, were among eight people arrested and charged in court over multiple accusations.
The eight are facing charges of causing disturbance at Kathome, about eight kilometres from Machakos town at 2pm on Tuesday. They were travelling in an Okoa Kenya caravan to Machakos from Mlolongo to promote a forthcoming meeting on Cords proposed referendum.
They are also accused of using abusive language towards the authorities by calling them dogs when they were confronted, and destroying county government property worth about Sh500,000 during the incident. They denied the charges when they appeared before senior resident magistrate Irene Kahuia and were released on a cash bail of Sh30,000 each. The case will be heard on December 30.
Hundreds of Machakos residents jammed the courts on Tuesday afternoon but were barred from entering to hear the plea. The eight were brought to court at about 3.30pm after spending almost half an hour in the cells.
