Pool and Snooker are similar in appearance, yet quite different. The games played on each are also different.
More skill is required to play snooker than pool since the table is larger, the pockets narrower, the pocket lead-in curved and the balls smaller.
Pool is more common in the United States than snooker. Certain states have a concentration of snooker popularity including Colorado, deep South and the mid-West in the United States. Once a person plays snooker, they become better at pool since the accuracy is critical to snooker.
Snooker is the game of choice in Canada, Great Britain, Europe, Middle East, Australia and India. For the most part snooker has become popular in countries where Great Britain has had Colonial interests.
Up to this day, many people still think that pool and snooker are the same. But the fact is that they differ from each other. A pool table is different from a snooker pool table in many ways.
A pool table is used when you want to play the pool games of eight-ball, nine-ball, or a straight pool. While a snooker pool table is used when you want to play the game of snooker. Here are some of the differences between a snooker table and a billiards table.
Sizes. A full size snooker table is normally longer in length compared to a pool table. The fact is that both tables come in many sizes, but only two sizes of pool tables are allowed to be used in tournaments. The sizes allowed are the size eight and nine foot tables. Another difference aside from their length is the rectangular playing surface area. Generally, snooker tables have longer and wider playing surface compared to a pool table. There are two recognized sizes of snooker table. These are the American snooker table that is ten feet in length and the British snooker table that is twelve feet in length.
Felt. The playing surface area of a pool table and snooker tables are covered in a different type of cloth which is commonly referred to as felt. This is also the same kind of cloth used in poker tables. Felt has many kinds of texture and textile blend. In a first-class pool table, the kind of felt that is used is fuzzy, this makes the ball to roll slower. Whereas in a snooker table, the felt they commonly use is less fuzzy. As a result of this, it affects the speed of the ball. A less fuzzy felt makes the ball roll faster.
Pockets. The pool table and the snooker table both have the same number of pockets which is six. The difference starts in the size of the pockets. Pool tables have bigger pockets because it use larger balls. Snooker pockets however are smaller in terms of size and use smaller balls. These differences somehow affect the shot precision. This makes the game of snooker more difficult to play compared to a game of pool.
Rails. In the game of pool and snooker, it is common to use therails to guide the balls straight into the pocket. With a pool table, the rails have more angular in edges. Whereas in a snooker table, the rails have rounded edges. These makes the game of snooker more challenging to play even for an advanced pool player.
Cue sticks. There are many kinds of cue sticks, there is the one-piece, two-piece, and the three-quarter two piece cue stick. In the game of pool, the first two kinds are commonly used while the last one which is the three-quarter two piece cue stick is for the snooker.
With the help of this information, I hope you can now be able to easily distinguish the difference between a pool table and a snooker table.
