The very first trade union of the Tanzania was the Motor Drivers Union which was formed in the year1927. In the year 1937, the Asian workers formed the Asiatic Labor Union which led to the formation of many unions in Tanzania. These organizations did not have any involvement in the industrial conflicts. Their main objective was to help their members.
The beginning of the modern labor movement in Tanzania dates back to 1940s. Five unions were formed by the year 1947 which were registered by the authorities. The government of the colonies was against the formation of the unions and had enacted laws to keep the movement low.
In the year 1955, 17 trade unions came together to form Tanganyika Federation of Labor. The main objectives are the get in more people into the union and to merge the small unions. At the time of fighting for independence, the TFL joined with Tanganyika African National Union which was a party formed in the year 1954 to fight against the United Kingdom to gain independence, which ultimately happened in the year 1961.
