November 14, 1866: Dom Miguel I, King of Portugal, died in exile while hunting at Bronnbach in the Grand Duchy of Baden. The third son of King João VI and his queen, Carlota Joaquina of Spain, Miguel was a big fan of absolute monarchy or, as he liked to call it, "tradition". Briefly exiled for his support of absolutism in the April Revolt, he returned to Portugal as regent and fiancé of his niece, Queen Maria II, promptly usurping the throne and proclaiming himself King. The Portuguese Liberal Wars followed, and he was ultimately forced from the throne and sent packing into exile the last thirty-two years of his life.
