Minister of Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu

Tourism and Natural Resources minister Lazaro Nyalandu has said his counterpart from the Premier's Office William Lukuvi, jumped the gun in criticising his performance.

Mr Nyalandu said in Mbeya at the weekend that Minister of State (Policy, Coordination and National Assembly) William Lukuvi was wrong in accusing him before the CCM secretary general, Mr Abdulrahman Kinana.

Last week Mr Lukuvi accused Mr Nyalandu of failing to address a conflict between his constituents in Kilolo and an investor over hunting rights despite the former writing several official letters to that effect.

Mr Nyalandu, who was speaking to reporters with regard to the government's plans to promote tourism in the southern highlands, said it could have been better if Mr Lukuvi communicated directly to him rather than criticising him in public rallies.

The tourism minister added that he had never received a letter from any villager in Kilolo although he admitted to being aware of the conflict between villagers and the investor.

"Since we are all serving the same government, I think Mr Lukuvi was wrong to criticise me before Mr Kinana; if there is any problem I think it was better to raise it in an appropriate forum," said Mr Nyalandu.

Mr Nyalandu also accused unnamed people of trying to sabotage him as a minister for Tourism and Natural Resources. He said he was aware of meetings that have been held to plot against him.

According to Nyalandu, he made many enemies when he strengthened security around the huge ivory stockpile and streamlined the issuance and managment of hunting blocs.

"When I became a full minister, some people came to me and tried to direct me how to work, but I chased them away; I told them that I would honour my oath to the President," said Mr Nyalandu.
