Chief Traffic Police Commander, Mohamed Mpinga

Road accidents have claimed at least 1,078 lives between June and August this year, leaving 3,815 people with injuries during the period under review.
Of the total deaths, 320 were reported in June, while 368 and 390 were reported in July and August respectively.

Addressing journalists at the Traffic Police headquarter in Dar es Salaam Wednesday, Chief Traffic Police Commander Mohamed Mpinga the accidents were a result of recklessness in driving.

During the same period, he said, 3,338 accidents were reported in the country.
"Despite efforts by traffic police in monitoring road regulations, use of speed traps and other methods, accidents have been on rise," he said.
He called upon the public, the passengers in particular, to ensure they report speeding drivers.

Highlighting on the forthcoming Road Safety Week, Commander Mpinga said it will be held in Arusha at national level at the end of this month.
This year's theme is "Your Judgment on Use of the Road Determines our Safety-Think First".

Early this month, a tragic road accident claimed at least four lives and seriously injured 34 others after a bus heading to Tabora from Dar es Salaam overturned at Kiegea in Gairo District, Morogoro Region.

A much worse tragedy in which at least 36 people died on the spot while 79 others were injured happened last week when three vehicles collided at Saba Saba area in Butiama, Mara Region last week.

At the last week of August, ten people died in another road accident that involved a minibus and a truck in Mbeya Region. Among the deceased were two baby boys, four men and four women.

Data obtained from traffic police last year shows that at least 3,642 people were killed and 18,813 others injured between January and November in 2013 in 21,691 accidents.

God forbid this, its too muchand we are suffering a lot already.

Our attitude towards accountability is not focused strongly on life saving in many areas such as licenses, traffic police, passengers and bus owners. God save us!

Me think so too. The thing is we have nurtured our shortcomings in this department for way too long.

And we shall continue to suffer, just yesterday I asked a driver driving us home from work to stop using his mobile phone and he didnt listen. What surprised me is the person who sat beside me, he said "mbona wengi tu wanatuma mpaka msg wakiendesha". This shows most of us dont care what these incompetent killer drivers do wnen behind the wheel.
