AMERICAN made automated teller machines widely used by commercial banks in the country are not reconditioned but most modern brands which are only failed by increasing transactions during peak periods.
CRDB Plc Managing Director, Dr Charles Kimei and Barclays Bank Tanzania Limited Managing Director Maina Kihara said NCR made ATMs offer the best services that money can buy in the automated teller world.
Just go to Google and get a description of our ATM--which are NCR P86, P77, and NCR Self-Service S-34 (these later are the top-end type of ATMs only recently developed with capabilities of doing all types of teller transactions including cash deposits), Dr Kimei argued as complaints against NCRs local agent, SCI Tanzania Limited as selling reconditioned ATMs which is why they frequently breakdown during peak periods, surface.
According to SCI Tanzania Limited, CRDB was the first bank to deploy NCR Self-Service S-34 ATMs which can also be used by clients to deposit cash. Dr Kimei argued that CRDB has since 2002 been using latest models of NCR brands and dismissed allegations that used machines were acquired at brand new prices as untrue.
Those who have been talking of used ATMs in CRDB Bank are just ignorant or simply seeking to tarnish peoples image, Kimei argued. Clients in Dar es Salaam and other cities in the country regularly face frustrations during month ends when most ATMs break down, hence the notion that the machines are refurbished.
The problems affecting our ATMs mainly emanate from poor infrastructure--electricity and communications interruptions.
We have been trying to address these by adopting recent developments in information technology, the CRDB chief pointed out. Barclays Banks Mr Maina argued that his company would only pay for the best ATMs available in the market and nothing less.
We select our service providers for their ability to provide the services we require. These services will always be of the highest quality and value for money available. This explicitly means that our equipment purchases are of new equipment, Mr Maina said.
He argued that servicing of his banks ATMs is of the highest quality available and that monitoring is on a real time basis to ensure that a benchmark up-time is met and breakdowns are addressed promptly.
Stakeholders in the banking sector accuse SCI Tanzania of engaging in unethical marketing practices which have seen high quality brands such as Fujitsu Siemens ATMs fail to penetrate the local market because of sabotage.
SCI Tanzania Limiteds General Manager for Operations, Mr Aloys Bupamba said the company strictly provides new ATMs and that any complaints of regular breakdowns during peak period were due to overworking the machines.
These ATMs are supposed to do 180-350 transactions per day but most of them do up to 1,000 at peak periods, Mr Bupamba argued.
He said because of the increasing traffic, banks such as CRDB have requested that their machines be serviced three times other than twice a year.
SCI Tanzania has so far supplied over 800 ATM machines to National Bank of Commerce, National Microfinance Bank, CRDB Plc, Barclays Bank, Stanbic Bank, Standards Chartered Bank and several others.
