In the visibly untended City Park Cemetery lies a grave with the epitaph 'A light has been extinguished. Yet there arise a thousand beacons from the spark he bore'. The grave holds a great man. One of Kenya's greatest sons. His name Antonio Rudolfo Jose Pio Gama Pinto
On the 24th of February 1965 as he waited on his drive way for his gate to be opened, three men walked up to him. "Jambo" they saluted him. He was well known. But these were not supporters of his. As his daughter watched, one of the men shot Pio Gama Pinto. As he bled to death, the light to one of Kenya's greatest hopes was extinguished. It was a tragedy his young family and the nation would never recover from. He was only 38 years old.
At 17, Pio Gama Pinto was in Goa clashing with the Portuguese authorities in the region as he stood up for the colonised ethnic Goans. He was an active participant in strikes and was a founding member of a political party that aimed to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule.
He was no different back home. He sat on the Mau Mau Central Commitee and was responsible for countless supplies and arms that kept the Aberdare Mau Mau running. With the initiation of Operation Anvil by the Colonial Government, Pinto was among the over 100,000 Kenyans who were detained without trial. While it is almost impossible to prove if true, it is said that Pio Gama Pinto was the only Kenyan of Indian descent who was jailed. And he stayed in prison for five and half years. This was only but a small price to pay for the liberation of the nation. A decade later Pio Gama Pinto paid the ultimate price, his life.
Disillusionment set in among the true revolutionaries shortly after independence. Jomo Kenyatta was a land grabbing capitalist who was surrounded by a cabal of wolves that began the systemic pillage of the country. That set the ball rolling for what would be 57 years of theft. And counting. Pio Gama Pinto could not stand it.
Fitz De Souza, one of Pinto's greatest friends and President Kenyatta's lawyer told of a shouting match between Pinto and Jomo Kenyatta on Parliament grounds. The subject was on the former colonial farms which Pinto knew Kenyatta was grabbing. Pinto, in rage, shouted to the president "I'll fix you!". The retort was a promise of death. It was kept.
On February 24th 1965, the promise was kept and the three men believed to have been led by one Kisilu Mutua(he would later claim innocence) shot dead a man,a socialist revolutionary and a father. And thus began an era of political assassinations that robbed the nation of it's brightest lights. But from the sparks of those lights, may a thousand beacons rise.
