Plans for an International Airport in Nakuru

Construction of an international airport in Nakuru town has returned to the radar with the allocation of Sh250 million for preparatory work in this year’s Budget.
A 642-acre land near the Kenya Pipeline depot has been earmarked for the project which encountered delays after internally displaced persons settled in the area.

The IDPS were recently moved to a 700-acre land in Subukia.
The airport is expected to provide a diversion for flights destined for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, about 200 kilometers away.
 
We should have airports all over the country, flying is faster and safer. And with more people flying, we will have cheaper tickets.
 
Long overdue, great news....

It is to act as a substitute to JKIA. Currently if a plane coming to JKIA gets a mechanical problem, it is diverted to Mombasa which is one hour away from Nairobi. If it is a serious problem then we need an airport close to JKIA to avoid disasters. Plus i don't believe in the concept of over-development. One cannot build too many airports especially in a country with 50 million people that has only 4 major airports. A country like Argentina has more than 166 airports because air transport is one of the cheapest and safest forms of transport. U.S.A has more than 5,000 public airports and 13,000 private airports. I am attaching data for both Argentina and U.S.A. Most serious countries have more than 50 airports.

While the number of public use airports in the United States has fallen since 1990, the number of private use airports has increased in recent years. In 2017, there were 5,104 public airports in the U.S., a slight decrease from the 5,145 public airports operating in 2014. Conversely, the number of private airports increased over this period from 13,863 to 14,263.

Public use versus private use airports

The distinction between public and private use airports refers to usage, not ownership. A public use airport is defined by the FAA as ‘an airport available for use by the general public without a requirement for prior approval of the airport owner or operator’, whereas prior approval is required for private use airports. Included here under the term airport are also heliports, seaplane bases, and facilities for other aerial hobbies.

Air passenger traffic in the United States

The last decade has seen consistent increases in the number of domestic passengers carried by major U.S. airlines, the number of international passengers travelling to and from the U.S., and the overall number of passenger-miles flown. It may therefore seem strange that the number of public use airports has decreased. This change can likely be explained, at least in part, by the significant decline in the number of regional flights over this period.

If airports are being mismanaged, does that mean we should stop building airports? If there is corruption and mismanagement of airports, does that mean we should stop building airports and just wait until corruption ends in this country? We as Kenyans should decide either to stop developing our country because a few bad apples are mismanaging our assets or we can decide to forge ahead with development even as we fight these thieves in court. I have always advocated for death penalty for corruption the China way. Mismanagement should be punishable by five years or more in prison. Mumias sugar, Uchumi, Sony sugar, Kenya airways and National Bank would still be making billions in profit if we punished mismanagement as ruthlessly as China does.
Just because there is corruption, laziness, short-cut mentality and mismanagement in Kenya, that does not in any way mean we should stop developing our country, infact it means we should punish the offenders even as we continue to develop our country...more airports, more ports,more roads, more everything.
 
Isiolo has four flights a week. It is operating under-capacity but it is not true to say that it has not started operations. Read these two articles.

Go to flightradar24 and give us a departure/arrival schedule for the last 1 week for Isiolo International airport..Hint..the airport is not even listed in FR24! let alone bush airports like wajir being listed

I have checked, it is not listed on flight radar. Does that prove that Isiolo is not operating? For you to prove that Isiolo is not operating, you have to prove that no flight has ever landed in Isiolo airport which is very difficult for you to do. However, if you are right then the boss of KAA blatantly lied to parliament that Isiolo airport is operating. Between you and the boss of KAA I cannot determine who is telling the truth.
 
What would an international airport hide from the public? So much so that bush airstrips like wajir and madera are listed on FR24? Your guess is as good as mine
