President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reshuffled her inner circle by transferring four members of the presidential office to other government positions.
The changes, announced by the office of the Chief Secretary yesterday, affect the President's Private Office (OBR). Zuhura Yunus, the Director of Presidential Communications, has been appointed Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities in the Prime Minister's Office.
Nehemia Mandia, previously the president's Personal Assistant for legal affairs, has been appointed a High Court judge.
Felister Mdemu, who served as the Personal Assistant to the President for community development, has been appointed Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups.
Petro Magoti Itozya, the president's Personal Assistant for political affairs, has been appointed District Commissioner for Kisarawe.
No immediate replacements were announced, and the swearing-in date for the new appointees was not disclosed.
These changes come at an interesting time as Tanzania prepares for local government elections this year and a general election next year.
While the changes are generally viewed as promotions for the four former presidential aides, they also suggest shifting dynamics within the President's inner circle.
Zuhura's departure from the Presidential Office has elicited mixed reactions on social media. Since assuming the role of Director of Presidential Communications in 2022, she has significantly transformed presidential communications in the country with her professionalism and innovation.
Given Edward, a digital innovation strategist, praised Zuhura's performance, stating, "Zuhura Yunus was perfect for that role. She completely changed the communications and digital platforms of the State House, looking magnificent by all standards. It’s unfortunate to see her exit."
Faida Magiyula, a young political leader, commended Zuhura for her effective communication strategies, such as the "Songa na Samia" initiative, which facilitated effective communication with the public.
Zuhura Yunus made history in 2022 as the first woman to serve as Director of Presidential Communications in Tanzania. Before her appointment, she spent 14 years at the BBC in London, where she was the first female presenter of the popular Swahili programme "Dira ya Dunia." She holds a master's degree in mass communication from Leicester University in the United Kingdom.
