Meeting Between His Excellency President Kenyatta And His Excellency Charles Michel, President Of The European Council

His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi held a meeting with His Excellency Charles Michel, President of the European Council who paid him a courtesy call.

The President and the visiting European Union leader discussed several matters of bilateral and multilateral interest to Kenya and the EU, and agreed to:

a) Strengthen and scale up partnership between Africa, and Kenya's private sector and the European Union as part of efforts to increase investments, create employment and support post Covid-19 economic recovery;

b) Upgrade Kenya's bilateral relations with the European Union to a strategic dialogue;

c) Foster a closer working relationship between Kenya and the European Union on regional matters;

d) Accelerate the implementation of existing Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) following the historic agreement at the EAC summit last week.

His Excellency Charles Michel was accompanied to the meeting by Amb Simon Mordue, European Union envoy to Kenya while President Kenyatta was joined by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) and Adan Mohamed (East African Community).

Also present were Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua and State House Deputy Chief of Staff incharge of Strategy Mrs Ruth Kagia.

Kenya to received 1.02 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. The minister said the vaccines would be administered to some 400,000 medical workers, and the rest would go to other front-line workers such as teachers and police officers.

Kenya, East Africa’s commercial hub, has more than 106,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, including more than 1,800 deaths. Many health workers for months have been disgruntled over the inadequate supply of personal protective equipment. They also say they were never paid the allowances that the government promised for the extra work and risk in combating COVID- 19.
