A few days ago I happened to be at the above Mall along Nyerere/Pugu road in Dar es Salaam where I had an appointment at the TMJ Clinic on the ground floor of the same premises. Upon completion of my business at TMJ; I decided to get my lunch at one of the eatery places upstairs.
I noticed something wrong the moment I stepped on one of the escalators but could not pin it down until later when I was getting ready to step forward at the top! Unfortunately it was almost too late because I found myself in some kind of trap and for a moment losing balance and falling backwards! I had to summon all my strength clutching on the handrail on my right and at that very moment I realized that something was wrong with the handrail itself! It was not moving, as it normally should be, in sync with the elevator steps! Therefore my clutching on to it made things even worse because I found myself falling backwards as my legs were being pulled forward by the steps. It was like standing on a running treadmill with your back on the control panel!
I also realised that while I was struggling to get out of there a man dressed in all white, badges, baseball cap, black boots and holding a baton; was just standing at the top of the escalator, literaly watching me! I couldn't help glaring at the dude for standing there like a dumb fellow while I was enduring such an ordeal.
After miraculously extricating myself from the contraption I asked the fellow what he was, and if he was some kind of guard or watchman whatever,and why was he just standing there not doing something like stopping the damn elevator to save my blinking life?
The guy simply looked at me like it was my fault being there in the first place! All I could say to him after controlling my anger was that he should report to his boss about the problem of the escalator handrails which must be moving in sync with the steps. "Do it pronto! Otherwise!, I said and: "your boss will one day be sued for any harm that your patrons may endure as a result of this stupid and reckless negligence!" And also tell him that he is lucky to be doing this in this country where the authorities are just a bunch of sleeping baf.......s!
