Geza Ulole has been on and on about miraa, Odinga has taken up the fight.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has petitioned the British government to review the ban on miraa.

Mr Odinga wrote to British Prime Minister David Cameron last Friday asking him to extend the June 24 deadline when the ban of miraa in the United Kingdom takes effect.

The opposition leader wants the UK to extend the date the ban becomes effective by at least a year.

In a statement Tuesday, Mr Odinga said: “The extension will allow further consultations and durable solutions, although he feels the best outcome would be a revocation of the ban altogether.”

He added that the one year extension would also allow communities in Meru and Nyambene explore alternative markets since they have all along depended almost entirely on miraa, with the UK as the main market.

He said the ban will hit hard communities in Meru ‘at a time of great economic uncertainty in the whole country.’

Mr Odinga promised the UK government that should an extension be granted, he will personally initiate discussions with the Kenya Government and elected leaders from the region including Members of Parliament, Senators, Members of County Assemblies and Governors on what can be done to ensure the miraa business does not pose a security problem to Kenya and to the UK and that al Shabaab and other terror organisations do not benefit from it.

He said the extension will enable Kenya work out better regulations of the business, including registration of all those involved in the trade.

Mr Odinga’s petition comes days after President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to intervene over the miraa ban.

My opinion https://www.jamiiforums.com/kenyan-news/669442-localize-miraa-consumption.html

I don't need miraa, i hate it but a blanket ban just hit some local economies hard; i think over dependence on one market is counterproductive.

Raila should live this mess to be dealt with by the Jubilee mandarins...this is a problem for Central folks and their tin god who keeps yapping about 'Facing East'...now why the clamour for Western markets?

While at it, please identify another market for this hallucinogen....ye of the 'Facing East'mantra.

Off-late he has been splattering all over, touching everything that breathes. The other day he was criticizing KDF attack on Alshabaab, yet he was PM when they went there.
All in all, we still need the western markets but are getting rid of them slowly. Especially if our tour industry survives their current boy-cot, then we will have made tremendous progress as is the one industry that has been depending on them hugely.

Regionalize consumption. Tanzania a potential market.
Tanzania laws ban Miraa! Miraa in TZ is like marijuana...if caught chewing that thing u r rewarded with a jail term

I can't imagine GOT will allow this kind of scenes to be a common occurrence within streets of Tanzania

We call this foolishness double speak.

Ofcourse we need them at the moment during this transitional phase. But as soon we are fully independent of them, we just kick 'em off. Just like USA has been using and dumping leaders around the world, especially in Africa. Man, you need to move on, election happened in March 4th 2013 and Kenyans are now on another phase of life. Uhuru was in your home region the other day and no one showed any sign of hostilities. This bitterness will kill you with HBP.

Back to the business, a disappointing response from the UK

Hopes for Kenya to resume selling miraa (khat) in the United Kingdom dimmed after the British High Commission insisted that the ban will not be reviewed.

In a statement Thursday, the Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Nairobi Stephen Burns said the ban comes into effect on June 24, 2014.

"This decision was in no way targeted at Kenya directly. The UK Government has had a long-standing intention to review the legal status of miraa.

"As the Home Secretary set out in July 2013, this decision was not taken lightly and the UK recognised the economic implications for a number of countries, predominantly in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula," the statement read.

Mr Burns said the British Government was aware of economic impact the ban will have in Kenya.

He said the UK Government will give Kenya aid to support economic growth.

He said the ban followed the British Parliament's approval of the Government's decision to reclassify miraa as a Class C drug.

He said the UK is one of the last countries to reclassify miraa, with the majority of other EU member states already having done so, as well as most of the G8 countries including Canada and the USA.

"That the UK is at serious risk of becoming a regional hub – with evidence already suggesting that the UK is being used as a transit hub for onward illegal miraa trafficking to the Netherlands (where miraa was banned in January)," Mr Burns said.

The stand by the British Government comes days after President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to intervene to have the ban reviewed.

Speaking in Meru County, President Kenyatta said the Government was committed to saving their source of livelihood.

MY TAKE
The GOK should use miraa to win the hearts of Al Shaababs in Somalia! I tell u if the GOK procure and distribute all the harvest for free in Somalia, all the hostilities will be waved and Kenya will live in peace again! Just a suggestion

When are you going to 'be independent'?...Pray tell.

Meanwhile people moved on a long time ago...its the regime and your kind who think people didnt move on. We are on to the next phase...holding the Govt to account on all matters governance.

Yani wameikataa fasta hivo... afu hiyo statement kua they are aware and they will provide economic aid to kenya is an insult... Aid on what conditions, yani conditions walizotubana african countries still wanataka waziongeze day after day... Sometimes i really feel like these guys are sucking us too hard n we are just there watching doing nothing while they keep lying to us that african countries are growing.. pure nonsense, growing while more n more people are dying of hunger.. We need to free from this foolishness (neocolonialism) otherwise they'll always see u as monkeys....

You can't hold government to account on matters governance by sabotaging it. By the way since Westgate, Alshabaabs have not claimed responsibility to the subsequent attacks, hope NSA gets deeper into this issue. People have to move on.
