Lucas Silva: "I'm up for the challenge"

BRAZILIAN UPBEAT AFTER SIGNING FOR REAL MADRID

Lucas Silva lands in Madrid this Sunday, but he has had plenty of time to mentally prepare himself for what lies ahead. The Brazilian has been on Real Madrid's radar since last summer, but the negotiations only really heated up this winter. The midfielder took some time to talk to MARCA in the hours before his signing was officially announced, just after the negotiations reached their conclusion, when he was already starting to feel like a 'Los Blancos' player. "I'm really excited", said Lucas, who assured that he is ready for the challenge ahead of him.

Question. Congratulations on your signing.
Answer. Thank you very much, I'm delighted. It's a dream come true.

Q. Why sign for Real Madrid now?

A. It's true the transfer has gone through several stages, but I think the reason I've signed for Real Madrid now is based on the needs of the team. I said before that I was willing to go now or to wait - it wasn't really in my hands. In the end, everything's worked out so I can go now and I'm delighted with the decision. I can't wait to get to Madrid.

Q. Are you ready to play?

A. Yes, of course. Just now I was in the pre-season at my club, but I'm in great physical shape. I think I'll be ready for the manager after two training sessions to settle in, but I'll have to arrive, get down to work, and then the coaching staff will decide. I'm really keen to play.

Q. Are you aware of the challenge facing you?

A. Of course. Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world, but I feel up for the challenge and I'm really excited. I know I'm going to a club where there's a lot of competition, who play in a very tough league and the Champions League, but I'm ready for all of that.

Q. Have you spoken to Carlo Ancelotti?

A. No, I haven't had the chance to speak to the coach yet. I have spoken to people at the club, though, such as the sporting director, and I know what they want from me. They've watched me play for Cruzeiro and they know what my attributes are, but at the end of the day the coach calls the shots and I'll adapt to the team.

Q. Do you know what number you're going to wear yet?

A. Not yet. I'd like to wear 16, which is what I wore at Cruzeiro and is my favourite number, but I don't know if it'll be possible. Anyway, whatever number I'm given is fine; all I really care about is playing.

Q. What are your expectations about your unveiling?

A. It's definitely going to be a special day. Posing with the shirt, getting to know the Bernabéu and my teammates… I couldn't be happier at the prospect.

Q. Is it true that you waived your right to 10% of the transfer fee so you could join Real Madrid?

A. Yes, that's right. It was best for all concerned and at this stage all I wanted was to play for Real Madrid. I've been given a unique opportunity and I want to make the most of it.

Casillas: "None of us were on top of our game"

Following Real Madrid's win in Córdoba, Iker Casillas said that "this is the type of victory that wins you leagues" and stressed that "it was hard work, but taking home the three points is what matters" after Real "failed to play at their best".

The goalkeeper assured that none of Real Madrid's players "were on top of our game", although he added that they "won't dwell on the issue because the team is leaving with a win". "We got the result more through hard work than good play. We conceded a penalty after two minutes and we started 1-0 down", noted Casillas.

The club captain also complained that the "pitch was dry and uneven", which "makes it harder for a team which passes the ball around a lot" like Real Madrid. "We took home three points that looked like a big ask, but we absolutely had to win", he added.

Bale: "The team showed character to win"

Gareth Bale's heroics saved Real Madrid, putting the side back on course after a torrid afternoon in Córdoba. "It was a tough game. The pitch wasn't the best, but that was the same for both sides. You get this kind of match sometimes and thankfully we managed to win in the end", he remarked.

The Welshman was there to spare his teammates' blushes and praised the resolve Real displayed to stay strong and clinch the victory: "It's the same team as three weeks ago. We played the same. Sometimes you get these games, but the team showed character to win", said Bale.

Ancelotti admits anger at first-half performance

After Real Madrid's dramatic victory in Córdoba, Carlo Ancelotti said it was important his side won in order to maintain their grip on top spot in La Liga. However, the Italian was unhappy with his players' display for parts of the match and did not comment on the sending-off of Cristiano Ronaldo: "I haven't seen the incident so I can't give my opinion", he claimed.
The Italian tactician felt his team "had to win" the game to "collect the points" and "hold on to the lead in the league".

Ancelotti also noted his side tried to "create more space out wide than in the centre" thus leaving "more space for Kroos to allow him to get further forward". Still, the Italian was not pleased with his side's performance in the first half and said he "got angry at times", while admitting that Córdoba "played very well, fought for every ball and did well on the counter-attack".

Ancelotti said his team had "found it difficult" and that "it was not easy to play the ball on the ground", as the pitch was "not great". "The best way was from set pieces and that's how the goals came", the coach added. Ancelotti described Real Madrid's new signing, Lucas Silva, as a "very good and young" player who "is going to help" the team because of his "quality and intelligence on the pitch".

Ronaldo rubs world champion status in Córdoba fans' faces

DEFIANT GESTURE AFTER SENDING-OFF

Cristiano Ronaldostroked the badge that proclaims Real Madrid as world champions for 2014 when he left the field at Córdoba's Nuevo Arcángel stadium after being sent off for kicking out at Edimar. This was his way of getting even with the Córdoba boo boys who were berating him from the stands.
