DAR ES SALAAM: Kenya champions Gor Mahia maintained their unbeaten record in the Cecafa Club Championships in Dar es Salaam beating minnows Djibouti Telecom 3-1 to finish top of Group A on Sunday.
Strikers Michael Olunga and George Blackberry Odhiambo scored spectacular goals in the first half, while Enock Agwanda got into the act in the second half at the National Stadium as Gor continued with their hunt for the regional trophy.
Said Hassan Elmi came through with the consolation goal for Telecom.
In the other match played at the same venue, Yanga beat Al Khartoum 1-0 to finish second.
With a semi-final berth already secured, Gor coach Frank Nuttall overhauled the starting roster to hand goalkeeper Jerim Onyango and Ernest Wendo starting roles.
Ronald Omino and Enock Agwanda also started as regulars Meddie Kagere, Godfrey Walusimbi and Karim Nizigiyimana started from the bench.
A BONUS
The Scottish tactician said he was satisfied with the performance of his boys as they looked ahead to the pressure cooker knock-out stage.
Playing four games in seven days is not easy and that is why we chose to rest some players.
Our ambition was to get past the group stages and I am glad that we have achieved that. I know that we shall have tough opponents in the quarter-finals but at this point any further achievement will be a bonus for us, he said.
Lightweights Telecom, who have not won a single match in the tournament, asked KOgalo questions, with striker Mohammed Youssouf repeatedly demanding superb goalkeeping skills from Onyango.
Odhiambo however got Gor going after weaving beautifully past three Telecom defenders before unleashing a shot that gave goalkeeper Jeef Nzokira no chance.
In the 27th minute, Olunga positioned himself in the Telecom goalmouth in anticipation of Ronald Ominos cross which he smashed home.
