An ambitious $150 million (Sh15 billion) urban passenger train connecting Nairobi suburbs to the city centre is set to be launched by June.

The project, co-financed by Kenya and Hungary, will ease traffic congestion in the city besides transferring technology to Kenyans.

President Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed the city tram project on Friday saying " development-conscious Kenyan would oppose such a programme".

He spoke on Friday during talks with Hungary Ambassador to Kenya Eduard Laszlo Mathe, who had paid him a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

The President said phase one of the project will connect the Standard Gauge Railway end point in Nairobi to the railway station in the city centre.

Other branches will connect the suburbs with the station. The proposed branches of the train project will include Thika Road, Ngong Road, Ongata Rongai and Limuru Road, all connecting to the city centre

The President directed the Transport ministry to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

He explained that Hungarian engineers will train their Kenyan counterparts to make materials and transfer the skills to manage the project.

The Hungarian ambassador said the proposed tram service will transform the way people in the capital city get to work.

“It is expected to transport about 300,000 passengers a day and even more when all the branches are fully operational,” he said.

“In line with Hungary’s new foreign policy for Africa to reinforce economic relations, we will train and equip Kenyans with skills to develop the project and own it. This project will be made in Kenya,."

The envoy disclosed that his country has implemented a similar project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

On education, the ambassador pointed out that his country will provide Kenya with 50 postgraduate scholarships.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and senior officials of the ministry were at the meeting.

The first of the projects set to give commuters relief is the 13km Outer Ring Road linking Thika Road to the Eastern Bypass and onwards to Kangudo Road and to Jomo Kenyatta Airport. It is set for completion in July.

“We have several mass transport buses currently being piloted and we might acquire more once we confirm they are commercially viable to our businesspeople in the matatu sector, said Mr Macharia.

He said a new body, Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority (Namata) had been formed to address incoming traffic to Nairobi and outgoing traffic to Kajiado, Machakos, Muranga and Kiambu counties.

He said Namata would co-ordinate future plans on movement of vehicles towards their regions thereby reducing traffic lockdown along some key routes such as Nakuru-Nairobi, Nairobi-Mombasa, Nairobi-Ongata Rongai, Nairobi-Thika and Nairobi-Kiambu.

The CS said construction of Kenya’s first ever express flyover from Jomo Kenyatta Airport turnoff to Limuru Road had started after it was divided into three lots and tenders awarded to Chinese companies.

“The first company is on the ground and has started work on the Rironi-James Gichuru section, while the James Gichuru-Likoni section is still being designed as it has a lot of other amenities lying on road reserves or crossing at strategic locations,” he said.

The last batch, he said, Likoni-JKIA section had also been designed and its building set for commencement later in the year.

On the planned Mass Rapid transport system, Mr Macharia said that a light rail transport system was planned for two routes with the highest number of commuters, Nairobi-Thika and Nairobi Ngong route and should be competed in 2020.

my main worry for tz railway project is that the turkish contractor (yepi) have a tendency of not employing locals from looking at their project in Ethiopia ,

They hired more than half of all workers from their own country,they even hired ex-Turkish Soldiers for camp security ,they imported almost everything including the steel bridge structures (pray that your bridges are not steel).

Turkish are not like Chinese. There is no transfer of technology ,skills with the Turks or definite specifics on purchase of local content, unless maybe there was a signed agreement between Reli assets and the contractor

just visit their project in ethiopia on skyscrapercity , and its the same contractor doing the tanzanian line.

200 Tanzanian engineers have so far been employed as of last week. Turkish firms has been awarded only 200 km tuliza matako ya ujuaji. .

Tanzania: SGR Project Offers 600,000 Jobs

CONSTRUCTION of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) that is scheduled to start soon is expected to create about 600,000 jobs.

Reli Assets Holding Company (RAHCO) acting Managing Director Masanja Kadogosa told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the company will provide direct jobs to 200 people, mostly youths from the country's higher learning institutions.

"The 200 will mostly come from engineering fields, especially technicians and civil mechanics, among other construction experts who will be required to put up the bulk of rail works," he said Mr Kadogosa said the recruits from higher learning institutions will have to undergo basic training before being engaged in the SGR construction.

Apart from the created jobs, the railway project will also offer business opportunities for other Tanzanians. "The construction of the railway will lead to setting up of stations that will create business centres, this is an opportunity for Tanzanians especially youths to create businesses, "he said.

Meanwhile, RAHCO has reiterated its determination to keep the railway "reserve access areas" free from invasion, asking all people within the reserve areas to vacate immediately.

The company has further dismissed as baseless media reports that the demolition of illegal buildings along the railway reserve was illegal, with Mr Kadogosa maintaining that the exercise is being implemented as per rules and regulations.

"All the victims were given the government notice a year ago and had been always reminded to demolish the structures," he said, stressing that all houses within the reserve area are lined up for demolition without compensation to the victims.

He said 485 houses illegally staged from Dar to Pugu area along the railway reserve will be demolished to pave way for construction of the modern railway line.
