Rice fields of Mwea

Water flowing into the rivers stood at six cubic metres and could not sustain rice farming in the 26,000-acre Mwea Scheme.

Mwea Irrigation Scheme covers an area of 9000 ha, with a potential for 4000 ha expansion ( Emongór et al., 2009;MIS Manager, personal comm.
 
i) Mwea irrigation scheme gazetted area is 30,050 acres, 26,000 acres is currently under rice production. Thiba dam construction will add an additional 10,000 acres.

ii) Bunyala irrigation scheme currently only 1800 acres is under paddy rice production. Current expansion phase 1 will bring another 10,000 acres by february 2022, phase 2 ending in december 2024 will add another 10,000 acres to bring total acreage under paddy rice to 21,800 acres.

iii) Ahero irrigation scheme: Currently 4000 acres is under rice paddy. Current expansion will add another 12,000 acres.

NB: All irrigation scheme mainly produce rice but also produce soy bean, watermelon, tomatoes etc when the rice has been harvested.
