A Kenya athletics team coach has been sent home from the Rio Olympics after he posed as an athlete and gave a urine sample in a doping test.

Retired sprinter John Anzrah was caught out by doping control officers, who spotted a mismatch between his face and the badge of the athlete he was attempting to impersonate.

Kip Keino, a Kenyan running great and chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), then announced the decision to send him home.

He said: "We have sent Anzrah back home. He presented himself as an athlete, gave the urine sample and even signed the documents. We cannot tolerate such behaviour."

We don't even know how he came here because we (NOCK) did not facilitate his travel here."

It was not clear which athlete Anzrah was pretending to be.

But one senior source at Kenya's running federation, Athletics Kenya (AK), said he had spoken to the concerned athlete who claims Anzrah used his accreditation purely to obtain free meals from athletes' village.

"When the anti doping officials met him, they assumed he was the athlete and that he was lined up for testing," the Athletics Kenya source told Reuters.

"The coach, for fear of being exposed or discovered, did not explain to the anti-doping guy that he is actually not the athlete. Hence he played along and went for the test," added the AK source.

Last week, Kenya sent their track and field manager Michael Rotich home from the Games following allegations that he requested money to let undercover journalists, posing as athlete representatives, know when drugs testers would come calling. Rotich has denied the accusations.

This obsession with Kenya is crazy.. till they forget challenges facing their own country. . The question should be where is the future of Tz sports and not doping claims in Kenya...

Hawa umewataja ni top 5 duniani kwa vipaji vyao. Wewe ni top 5 kwa lipi??
Now that's a hefty claim to make. For someone coming from a place where they are accustomed to being on the outside looking outwards, how do you actually claim to have insider access to anything athletics. Even if they "banned " Kenyan athletes from all competitions, am sure none from bongo land will take over (am stating an uncomfortable truth, don't slay the bearer ).

IOC absolves coach Anzrah of wrongdoing in doping fiasco

NAIROBI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has absolved John Anzrah, the Kenyan Olympic sprint coach who was expelled from Rio Olympics, Brazil for allegedly posing as 800m athlete, Ferguson Rotich.
The IOC said in a statement received in Nairobi on Sunday that there was no preliminary evidence to suggest to any attempt to compromise the drug test, but "horrible mix-up".
"Chaperones were sent in search for athletes at the athletes' dining hall. On the list was the name of a Kenyan athlete, Ferguson Rotich. At the entrance to the dining hall, they noticed the name of the Kenyan athlete on the accreditation of a man wearing a Kenyan tracksuit," IOC said.
The statement said the chaperones informed the man he had to go to a doping control which he did and signed the doping control form.
The global Olympics body said the misunderstanding was sorted out after Anzrah explained he needed the accreditation to go to the athletes' dining hall to get breakfast, after which the right athlete was notified and arrived immediately at the doping control station and was tested.
IOC also clarified that Anzrah did not take a doping test as was earlier reported.
Anzrah has put up a spirited defence about his innocence since he arrived back in Kenya Friday night, blaming the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) officials for the fiasco after they dumped him and other members of the technical bench in a Rio apartment without food and other basic amenities.
By the IOC clearing Anzrah of any wrongdoing the onus is now upon NOCK to explain why the members of the technical bench were booked away from their charges, especially as reports trickled in that a number of joy riders were booked in their place at the athletes' village.
Anzrah's problems have elicited strong reactions from Kenyans, with athletics coaches and managers blaming NOCK for his predicament.
