A Pan-African bank on Monday unveiled a special credit facility to support airlines and governments seeking funds to buy Russian-made commercial aircraft.

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) global head of client relations Rene Awambeng said it had struck a deal with the Russian Export Sector (REC) where African-based operators will be funded to make the purchases.

Afreximbank has provided a Sh2 trillion ($20bn) fund to support Africa’s airlines, including national flag carrier Kenya Airways, and has promised to provide further funds to improve aviation infrastructure.

African countries predominantly make aircraft purchases from western firms, majorly US Boeing and European Airbus.
However, old Soviet-era cargo planes still operate in the African airspace.

Speaking in Nairobi during a meeting with industry players, Mr Awambeng said increased intra-Africa trade, aviation infrastructure and availability of higher disposable incomes among Africans informed the decision to provide the credit facility.

Objectives

“The effective movement of goods and people is fundamental to Africa’s trade, growth and development objectives.

Consequently, improving international, regional and domestic air transport has become a key priority area,” he said.

Russian civil aircraft as well as manufacturers of air traffic control equipment were in Kenya as part of a three-country intra-Africa roadshow to meet public and private sector aviation stakeholders to promote the Russian aviation industry products.

The one-day workshop saw Russian aircraft models showcased. The financier has in the past organised aircraft financing for the purchase of nine new Boeing 787-800s (Dreamliners) (B787s), 1 Boeing 777-300ER (B777-300ER) and 10 Embraer which was the first phase of Kenya Airways’ fleet upgrade and a key component of its 10-year business plan for the period 2012 to 2021.

Sukhoi’s REC is a state-owned export promotion development institute.

If that bank can continue financing the purchase of Boeing/Airbus/Embraer is ok. Better the familiar devil than the Russian angel that we don't know.

Russian airplanes of today are pretty good BTW.

Problem is Engines, They still consume like the 1990's American/ European models.
In this cut throght competitive airline business, unless you have latest GE, CFM, Plattwhittney or RollsRyoce turbofans, you wount break even.

Capacity building to have our local technical pool and serviceability contingencies also comes in play.
Good luck with their pitch though.

The initial plan was ATCL to purchase Russia MC21, they opted for Bombardier CS300 for the same reason, fuel cost. But the Russian have now decided to use western engines if the client prefers that.

The only advantage about Russia is that they wont hold you hostage with spareparts when you disagree with them politically in future.

Anyway, its kinda funny how russia commercial aircraft use western engines, and NASA engines which are the most powerfull space rockets in the world are Russian... And these guys are supposed to be mortal enemies. But Kenya and Tanzania, two small nations are busy fighting about milk and grains worth $35 million

Hahahaahaaa nimependa hiyo comment yako.
Jana I was going through a list of the world's busiest airports handling kitu 90 million passengers a year nikakumbuka hapa tukichuana vikali kuhusu capacity ya JKIA & JNIA airports tukawa tunachezea kwenye 6 million a year.
Africans inabidi tuache kuwa short sighted!

You are the trouble maker for that fate

Tanzanie is not a tiny country like kenya TZA is the big and giant nation in africa

The planes are Russian built, but the buyer can opt to have them fitted with western engines, especially from General Electric.

Utakua umepotea njia, waachie walio tayari kutumia ubongo waujadili huu uzi.

You Fit Western Engines to Russian Planes then Possibly their only advantage (Cheaper Price) gets wiped off the table.
Dont now their parts supply chains are organized around the world either, Its a gamble to buy russian planes.

I think Western Media has brainwashed many into thinking the way that you do. By all accounts Russia is a technologically advanced country, and their powerful Soyuz rockets are used by almost every spacefaring country on earth to send men/equipment to space. You do them wrong by comparing their tech to Europe's of the 50s/60s.
If I were Magufuli I would buy these planes, if only just to get a taste of fine Russian engineering!
PS: Why is Magufuli so hell bent on Canadian planes.....anunue na Embraer twa Brazil na tu Airbus kadhaa.....Pia nasikia Japan through Mitsubishi Corp wanataka kuanza kutengeneza commercial planes. Putting all his eggs in one basket imemcost sijui amelipa sh ngapi mpaka ki bombardier chetu kikaachiliwa.

Well I dont know much about Rocket engines, but I gather that SpaceX owned by Elon Mursk is ahead of Russia and ULA(Boeing&Grumman&LockheedMartin), atleast on their Latest Falcon Heavy Platform..
In Commercial Aircraft Engine tech, GE,PW,&CF are so much ahead that most Of Russia's Aeroflot fleet use them.
JPM made a good decision. Its not right/prudent to gamble on an Aircraft that no one knows with certinity the safety record and Parts availability. Its also not easy to find pilots with russian plane certification, training not easily obtained either unless from russia.
Embrarer has history with airbus, so its pretty much shares some platforms.

You can opt to buy Russian made planes with Russian made engines but you'll be limiting yourself to small number of unprofitable routes. No one will allow you to fly into their country with "uncertified" engines (this means NOT Western engines). The western countries have set the bench mark on aviation industry from the engines to avionics. Chinese themselves they've opted to use western engines and avionics on COMAC C919, so that they can sale those aircrafts into Western world and the world in general.

Forget Tz, the whole of Africa, with a population of 1.2 billion young and able humans has a combined GDP that is less than the GDP of France, a country of 66 million people... , we cant even fund our own AU, EAC, EALA .... A country like UK still has the power to recolonise us under military rule hatujaongelea marekani, A convestinal war between USA vs Africa combined would last like 5 days, on the six day we would be begging for a quick death . So when I say we are very tiny, I mean we are very very tiny! The only thing we are good at is signing mining contracts so that the world bring in their equipment and expertise to extract them
