The " Concept" Of interoperatability between Money Transfer services. In technology terms, Service Providers Publish their payment APIs for intergration. This happened first in Tz. Safaricom Published its Mpesa API much later.
After publishing APIs, intergration with online payment systems or other mobile payment systems is just a matter of if there is commercial intrest between the 2 payment systems

Tanzania was the first country to offer money transfer over other networks (interoperability). Mijinga inasema tupo nyuma bila utafiti.
We are talking about this international deal, not the regional one you are mentioning.

Tanzania: Tigo Pesa app to launch in April

With over 40 million mobile users in Tanzania, there is a real opportunity to use technology to financially connect those not yet included. Tigo Tanzania, Mastercard and local fintech Selcom have partnered to introduce Masterpass QR on Tigo’s Mobile Financial Services platform, called Tigo Pesa.

Almost seven million registered wallet holders of the Tigo Pesa solution will be able to pay for goods and services before the end of the second quarter of 2018. By scanning a Quick Response (QR) code at merchants via their Tigo Pesa app using their smartphone, they will be able to make payment. Feature phone users can use the USSD menu and simply type in a unique merchant code available under the merchant’s QR code.

The partnership announcement during the Mobile World Congress marks the launch of the country’s first truly global interoperable QR payment solution, allowing payments by both mobile money users and banked consumers at locations displaying the Masterpass QR logo.

“Tigo Pesa is not only a payments enabler,” said Simon Karikari, Managing Director at Tigo Tanzania. “It is a platform where customers can perform a full range of financial services, where Masterpass is a strong addition to the range of products and services our customers can enjoy in their daily lives.”

Tanzania has made great strides in financially including its citizens in the past decade: the percentage of Tanzanians formally part of the economy was positioned at only 15.8 percent in 2009, but that number has jumped to over 65 percent in the last year, driven largely by the introduction of easily accessible mobile solutions such as Tigo Pesa.

Raghav Prasad, Division President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Mastercard said, “Findings released in the 2017 FinScope Tanzania report further indicate that one of the main drivers of access to financial services in Tanzania has been the adoption of digital financial services. A trend we are seeing across the continent, and in emerging markets globally.”

He went on to add that with over 85 percent of retail transactions still being done in cash in Africa, accessible and secure payment solutions are key to bridging the gap. This is further reinforced by local research which reveals that 89 percent of consumers are still receiving income and making payments in cash. “We need to urgently action the shift from cash to smarter digital solutions, and Tigo Pesa enabling Masterpass QR payments is allowing this goal to become a reality.”

“Tigo is a strong brand in the Tanzania market, with mobile financial services platform, Tigo Pesa, as a powerful driver to achieve financial inclusion across Tanzania. With the addition of Mastercard’s Masterpass QR solution we are not only able to further strengthen our offering and ensure secure payments for all users, but also to bring much faster and more convenient payments to the fingertips of our customers. We have a vested stake in ensuring the country’s prosperity and that of its people, where partnership will be critical to achieving this goal and introducing more efficient ways for consumers to engage with the world around them,” concluded Simon Karikari,
Managing Director at Tigo Tanzania.

Mastercard partners with Selcom to Expand its Masterpass QR mobile payment solution in Tanzania

Mastercard has today announced a new partnership with Tanzanian fintech Selcom to expand its mobile payments solution, Masterpass QR, in Tanzania. The announcement was made today at the ongoing Financial Times Payments Innovation Summit happening in Nairobi Kenya.

The partnership will provide Mastercard access to Selcom’s established network of merchants in Tanzania and the two will work to empower these merchants to accept QR payments. Additionally, the partnership will enable banks, Micro Finance Institutions, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to offer Masterpass QR to their customers with the goal of creating a cashless Tanzania.

Available on either a mobile money account or a banking app, Masterpass QR is a quick, secure and convenient way for consumers to pay and for merchants to accept digital payments. Merchants will display a Quick Response (QR) code instore that can be scanned using a smartphone or alternatively the consumer can use the USSD menu on their feature phone and simply type in a unique merchant code.

Over 95 percent of the businesses in Tanzania are SMEs, representing 35 percent of the country’s GDP according to the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. The countrywide roll-out of Masterpass QR will go a long way to empower these businesses to accept interoperable electronic payments, while providing banks and MNOs with a wider range of solutions and services to offer to their customers.

“Tanzanian SMEs are too reliant on cash as a means of transacting, which puts businesses at risk of crime and also places a burden on the economy,” says Chris Bwakira, Vice President and Area Business Head, East Africa, Mastercard. “Cash handling is expensive, and in todays connected world, unnecessary. There are more efficient ways for businesses to operate, and the role of our partnership with Selcom will help us to develop a stronger payments ecosystem in Tanzania to the benefit of all its citizens.”

Masterpass QR will enable thousands of merchants to accept quick and secure payments, giving them a competitive edge and providing a way for these business owners to track their financial history, further enabling them to access loans and other financial products that can help to grow their business. Especially important for the two organisations is the ability to reach merchants and consumers that currently don’t have a mobile money account or formal banking account.

“Supporting local business growth is critical, and our role as the private sector should not be overlooked. The local government cannot achieve its goals to drive innovation and entrepreneurial competitiveness alone, it will take investment and commitment by organisations vested in Tanzania’s prosperity,” says Sameer Hirji, Executive Director of Selcom.

“Selcom and Mastercard’s aim is to shape the way payments are made in Tanzania using digitally enabled solutions. Tanzanians have an affinity for mobile, so introducing payment solutions that remove the need to carry around cash will make their lives considerably easier and safer. Our partnership will enable us to also expand the scope of Masterpass QR beyond retail, reaching more businesses in the country and potentially across Africa,” concluded Hirji.

In February, Mastercard also partnered with M-Kopa to light up homes and businesses in Africa. Under this partnership which was unveiled at the Mobile World Conference, M-KOPA will also pilot Mastercard’s Quick Response (QR) payment technology in Uganda to extend the reach of its pioneering pay-as-you-go solar program.

Mambo mengine kwenye simu namaliza.
