Shujaa was following in the footsteps of Hon. Hounphouet Boigny, the first President of the Ivory Coast. The latter relentlessly sought to transform Yamoussoukro, his village of birth, into a new nation's capital where he constructed grandiose buildings including the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
Yamoussoukro Basilica is the largest church in the world which has managed to claim that position of leadership from St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Add to that Yamoussoukro International Airport.
Like our Shujaa, Boigny breathed his last while new construction projects in his birthplace were still in progress and before his ultimate ambition saw the light of day.
As I write, Yamoussoukro is only the nominal capital of the Ivory Coast. Government officials prefer to live and work in Abidjan and so Yamoussoukro is a veritable ghost city.
In the Chato Region project the tax payer and the nation at large are being held hostage to nepotism, megalomania, insatiable ambition and a penchant for misuse of public resources.
Geita Region was arguably a personal project, created only a few years sgo at the behest of Mwendazake to pander to the above mentioned traits. But, like Oliver Twist, Shujaa had no qualms about asking for more.
